Secrets of the Gibson Skylark - What Would I Do with $1M? Two Gibson Skylarks at the Same Time, Man.

  • In this video we'll service and modify two 60's Gibson GA5 Skylarks. One is an earlier Crestline GA-5 and the other is a later GA-5T with tremolo. The GA5T contains a "tone sucking network" or Sprague couplet for tone shaping. That'll get the boot and we'll tweak the rest of the circuit as well to be more friendly to single coil guitars and break up better when cranked. In the end, we'll have a more versatile pair of amplifiers hopefully.

    I used to gig with two Skylark GA-5Ts. I've owned 5 or so and still own my first one. They're Champ-killers. When I gigged with both, I would send a stereo signal out to them and do a ping-pong delay. They sound amazing mic'd.
    Also, those are not normally referred to as "chrome-dome" knobs. They're called "reflectors."

    • @ashleyhilliard4971

      So two of these together in stereo were loud enough to cut over a drummer ? Could handle a medium size venue ? And mic'ed for larger ones ? I've always wanted to try gigging with two Gibson eh 150 amps or two blackface princeton's or vibrochamps. I love the tone of old tube amps but after having surgery I can't carry heavy tube amps around anymore. Would you recommend using two smaller tube amps in stereo ? Did you run into any issues doing that live ?

      i disagree that they are champ killers they are made to not sound great with
      fenders unless you change it.change it & they are quality but very different from a champ for me but if you use a gibson guitar they sound much better.so anyone wanting to get one remember to change the cap set up if you want to use it with a fender guitar as shown by the man who fixed them great post peace...

    Note on Asbestos.
    I worked in construction and carpentry,woodworking,furniture and cabinets.During my career I had the occasion to do work for a company who’s mission was Asbestos testing.
    These people were scientists ,professionals and highly respected in this field of asbestos abatement.
    Here is what the owner of this company told me.One particle of asbestos lodged in your lungs is enough to cause cancer.I am sure I looked skeptical when he told me this as I ,like you question everything.So then he said ,Look one particle does not guarantee cancer but if you are in an environment that has asbestos insulation you are going to be exposed to millions of particles.Especially if it’s your work space.
    That makes sense.
    The particle are jagged and extremely sharp. They can and will dig into lung tissue permanently.
    In other words it’s bad shit.
    Wear a mask if you must be around it.Be safe.

    • @SpaceShipDeathstar
      @SpaceShipDeathstar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not want to downplay the risk, but as long as the asbestos is contained in a stable matter and not scratched, sawed or messed with it is relatively save as there are no particles emitted in the air.

    The English Gibson Family crest features 3 geese or possibly swans with the motto ' Recte et Fideliter ' (Honest and Faithful ) which could be conspired as ' true fidelity ' . If your going to rip off a family crest and motto for clean sounding amps , that would be a good one. I've seen those 3 leg 2 layer mica caps made by Lemco in UK radio stuff . Good as a free 2 leg silver mica cap . Lemco used red too....

    Brad how about, set the grille & speaker flat on its face, get hold of spkr wire, then lower the empty cabinet face down onto that, and flip - so the baffle board is lying in place & speaker wire protruding under the cabinet edge - then test your tone (albeit in omni-directional mode.)

    I also watched a speaker building and design, on a computerized graph the same speaker had entirely different characteristics if the speaker is upside down like a ceiling speaker the graph of that same speaker acted like a different speaker than if it was aiming up from the ground and aiming straight at you and it wasn't a little change. The weight of the speakers cone and voice coil is the issue when trying to achieve a flat response.

    I guess/ hope your camera is ok. That was funny! One day you should make a blooper reel. With dogs, kids and equip fails I can imagine the pandemonium in the Linzy household. I miss all that.

    If the date of the non-trem amp is still in question, the tolex matches my Falcon... It's not a tolex they used for very long... it also has the aluminum chassis... The stamp on the original Jensen in it dates to '62... So... I think '62/'63 is a solid logical jump...

    Hmmm looks like you stole two of her Yoga blocks now. Don't let her see the video. Another great video and the first I think I've seen you break out a scope in. I have been debating to get a scope or not. I saw a vintage tube type one for $25 in a pawn shop. Probably should have picked it up.

      @TheGuitologist  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha, my wife literally just read your comment and went "you got TWO of my yoga blocks!?!?" :D
      The scope had been buried in my old place. I just never saw much need in it if it's buried. But if it's out and ready to go...It can help tell where noise is originating, like it did here.

    I left my Crestline 100% stock... knowing that it sounds WONDERFUL with humbuckers, and grating with singles. Gibson amp made for a Gibson guitar... why not?

      No harm in leaving them. I find the ones with the couplets are a more versatile amp with them removed.

      I did a few tests on my hoarde of amps to get a visual representation of what the output looks like. The Gibson GA-5T is included in the mix. th-cam.com/video/oi72KdptmN8/w-d-xo.html It's not scientific, but I sure can see the differences in sound shape.
      With NO tone knob on the amp, you'd be surprised at how much more dynamic your guitar's tone knob can be on the GA-5T

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the amp so tinny, the tone knob on the guitar will make a bigger difference, sure. But I'm of the mind that when you take frequencies out in tone-shaping, you can't put them back in. A better solution would be a tone control on the amp, but that would be a bigger mod.

    • @DeadKoby
      @DeadKoby 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The "HOT" spot in frequency created in the treble region is precisely where your guitar's tone knob falls (on a gibson anyway). It really does sound beautiful when you match them. Sounds great with a Gretsch too.

    I would guess the weight difference between them is due to the thickness of the cabinet wood. The older one looks like 3/8" and the newer 3/4". They both sound great. The color bars after the crash was a nice touch too.

    Brad I heard that you can prevent demonetization by uploading your videos and then releasing them 3 days later (AvE does that if I'm not mistaken). But I might have heard wrong.

    Removing that Sprague Couplet might have loaded down the V1 first preamp tube to prevent it from oscillating since it had so much gain on it to drive the Sprague Couplet?

    Also if anyone that’s watching this in any vintage nos tubes I’ve got a stash of over 100 random of them. I don’t want eBay rip off prices. Sorry not trying to make this comment section a place for me to sell stuff. But I don’t know anyone that would want them.
