I must thank you, because your the only person I've seen that actually shows how you put the airlines back and actually showing the collars for the Service and Emergency line - I'm learning my class 1 at the moment and the instructor videos are useless so thank you again!
This is a great video. I like the way the camera has been located on the trailer chassis so you get a perfect view of what is taking place. So many of these videos show the footage from the side and you don`t get to see exactly what you need to see...great job.
This is NOT a great video! After making the point about putting the trailer brake on (well done) there's no mention at all of making sure the UNIT PARK BRAKE IS ON! FAIL!FAIL!FAIL! VERY DANGEROUS!
Thanx for the video! came here to see how the European truckers do that. our air connectors are different (two which are called gladhands) and one different electric connector. trailer brakes are controlled from the cab as the tractor (2 different knobs). the license plate on the trailer doesn't change, and "Trailer legs" we call "Landing gear" - cheers from Canada!
In my school they always taught us to stop the engine prior to connecting or disconecting ABS, they explained that if you don't do that there will be a high risk of burning the ABS block
One other thing to add ,is compere the distance of the king pin to the landing legs with the distance of the filth wheel to the rear lights of the tractor , to make sure you have room to engage trailer without bashing rear lights into landing legs. And also check the total height of front of trailer from the ground once coupled up to the tractor as that can vary with different units...
At my company - When we connect we lift the suspension up so the legs are just off the ground then we do the tug test otherwise you will damage the legs
+Rupert Loseby Thanks for your message. The reason for checking the height is to ensure the tractor unit lifts the trailer just off the landing legs. This will stop them form getting damaged. If you connect then raise the suspension the damage could already have been done by the king pin not being central in the fifth wheel and sliding the legs across the ground. Hope this helps :-)
You could also lower unit suspension all the way down then reverse under trailer stopping when fifth wheel is under trailer... raise unit suspension all the way up.. then legs are off the floor then reverse into kingpin.. this way stops grease from getting on the end of the trailer and damaging legs
I passed today with only 1 minor mark. I did my class 1 in a wag and drag, which I don't think should be allowed as I haven't coupled a unit and trailer. Thanks for the video, very informative.
Hi there i find your video very informative. Is there a correct sequence and an incorrect sequence of connecting/disconnecting the air lines to the trailer?
+Ciarán Mc Ardle He seemed to always start with the air lines before the electrical lines. So when coupling, he connected the air lines first. When uncoupling, he seemed to remove the airlines first.Ideally you would want them not to get tangled up, so start from 1 end and work to the other end
On your test. If you want to check the brake light can u ask the instructor to watch as you press brske.or do you need to reverse upto somewhere and see reflection?
I drive in europe and trailer has its own registration. No need to add the one from the front part. The trailer brakes are also automaticallly applied once you disconnect the cables. We also raise the trailer a little bit using the back suspensions, once the pin is released. Obviously you need to lower the legs a bit more, before you move forward.
You connected two yellow air lines and no red air line? just noticed that the collars are gold on your video, trucks at work, have 1 yellow collar and 1 red one.
I've just done my CPC and there was a question: how do you couple tractor with a 3 airlines with a trailer with two airlines. Does anyone have a example of that scenario?
Hi Bogdan! The answer for that is to connect the red and yellow, leaving the blue off. Due to the couplings, It's impossible to get them mixed round. Red: Emergency, Yellow: Service, Blue: Auxiliary. Hope this helps!
@@2StartLtd thanks for that info! I want to learn as much as possible before selecting a company to do my training with and obviously want to pass everything 1st time. I'm getting there with learning modules and practice tests on the dvsa website! But these videos really help too!
The way my dad and I do it is get out from drivers side and get your gloves on (keep them in drivers side locker as it’s easier for you) then go to the passengers side. Do the airlines and electric lines and everything then do your dog clip and release the king pin. Go to the trailer legs and lower them. Grab the number plate from the back and pin it to the catwalk of the truck (again do this on drivers side to make life easier). When coupling do it in reverse but still put gloves on.
After coupling, the brake air pressure indicators in the cab would be low and most likely sound an alarm warning that the pressure is low, you would then increase air pressure by reving the engine for about 30 seconds or so, at least this is what I was taught.
This depends on the trailer. If the air pressure is good in the trailer once connected you will be ready to got. If the air pressure is low it will need to be built up before you will be able to move the trailer.
Nice video. I would’ve added to your list at the end, to check the trailer brake is on before coupling up. You said it at the start of video. Not criticising, just saying
Lift the trailer legs? Do you mean fully or partial ... because if on the tug test, the driver shoots forward and the legs are wound up he would tip trailer .. hence legs stay down u til test is done
And why not lower suspension before reversing under trailer? So 5th wheel misses front of trailer, keeping grease on 5th wheel not on front of trailer. Once under skid plate but before reaching king pin raise suspension lifting legs off ground, and then reverse into the king pin.
Dont you need to level the ECAS system before you drive away??. Should you not check if the trailer is empty/loaded before you leave with it? Should you not check the trailer is within its service period and its MOT is current? One of the better ` how to do it correctly vids`
you forgot to say that you have to lower the unit first and then raise it again otherwise new drivers will either hit the trailer with 5th wheel or go under and trailer will hit the cab. this video is confusing and not complete to new drivers!
I'm disappointed with explanation how connect lines are ! What is first ? Electrical or air . Rubbish video ! What is gold connector? What is correct way of connect this hoses ?????????
No wonder people get fukin grease everywhere being taught like this!!... you are supposed to drop the suspension go under the trailer then lift it up..not push under so the headboard scrapes the 5th wheel!..

Very interesting video. I often wondered what the curly coloured things were on a HGV. I learnt a lot

As an articulated shunter I do this every single day. Best job to have prior to gaining any HGV license.
Awesome video man very specific, just passed my theory and hazard test so have been watching all these video's to get a better understanding of it all

Excellent video, especially footage underneath,
Thanks so much guys.

That's what is supposed to happen but when a driver has left to high or low then you have to adjust. Thanks. Good site. I passed 2008

I totally agree that’s how I passed mine aswell
Agree - what is the point of doing class 1 on a wag and drag! Driving an arctic is completely different to a wag and drag, makes no sense to me.
Awesome upload. Most informative and extensive instructions on coupling and de-coupling. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for this video, very helpful thank you so much

On your test you ask the examiner to confirm your trailer lights are working.
1:58 - You can also use a padlock for extra security.
very true especially if you park outside often. but keep the spare key in the glovebox lol
Good video very helpful
Can a dangerous situation occur when uncoupling if you do not adjust your air suspension? thinking that the whole tractor gives a jump upward.

A tip when I done my Class 1, remember BLANK - Brake, Legs, Air, Number plate, King Pin, switch this around when coupling.

A tip, when I did..... not done
it was good lesson about coupling trailer
thanks for this
Genuinely surprised you didn't mention the tractor unit handbrake after test tugging the trailer. A recipe for disaster
He doesn't mention this in the video. Once the trailer is coupled to the tractor unit, would you not have to build up air in the trailer brakes?
After coupling, the brake air pressure indicators in the cab would be low and most likely sound an alarm warning that the pressure is low, you would then increase air pressure by reving the engine for about 30 seconds or so, at least this is what I was taught.
+DMESSER ok cool. thnx
This depends on the trailer. If the air pressure is good in the trailer once connected you will be ready to got. If the air pressure is low it will need to be built up before you will be able to move the trailer.
If the air in the trailer is ok its doesnt need mentioning..no video will ever cover every thing....
Thank you
here in the us we dont have hand brakes n our trailers our brakes lock as soon as you cut off the air from the trailer
They do here in the uk too but we have handbrakes so they dont automatically release when the air line is connected
Levelling of the unit in and out

Please, do show the official law on getting points for one rotation missed on winding the legs up.

Lift the trailer legs? Do you mean fully or partial ... because if on the tug test, the driver shoots forward and the legs are wound up he would tip trailer .. hence legs stay down u til test is done
W Wood I mean just partially clear of the floor so as not to bend the legs when the tug test us carried out
Surely you should be showing new drivers too raise the suspension before the tug test!
And why not lower suspension before reversing under trailer? So 5th wheel misses front of trailer, keeping grease on 5th wheel not on front of trailer. Once under skid plate but before reaching king pin raise suspension lifting legs off ground, and then reverse into the king pin.
