    Thank you sir, this exactly explained why people always say that the bird's mouth must be 1/3 of the width of common rafters. I think of this question for a long long time. You finally gave me the answer

    Can’t you obtain the length of the rafter by stepping the framing square holding the square on 12 for the run and 7 for the pitch and step it the amount of feet for the run of the building? Instead of figuring out math?

      Stepping (bunny hopping) is really imprecise after 5 steps or hops, due to lining up start and finish points accurately repeatedly

    Do you know what codes or textbooks call out where you can start measuring from to get your similar triangles that aren't on a edge of the wood? It doesn't feel intuitive to me at all.

      Some textbooks are more or less clear on this, L. Coel, Carpentry, is one of the better ones. Code books do not have trigonometry in them.
