My name is Richard Swindells This is where i lived in 1950 i am now 74 years old. My dad was one of the main engineers on the dam I still have box brownie photo's of it. We lived at Skoal Carr Farm. At 3 years old i helped one of the men plant all of those trees. I have another book coming out soon called My Inheritence From Yorkshire. I walked across that bridge when we used to catch the Rochdale Bus to go shopping with mi mum and mi 2 sisters Shiela and Sandra My dads name was. George Richard Henry Walter Swindells. If there is anyone alive these days who remembers me All my love and best wishes to you xoxoxoxox

Looks like a potential awsome metal detecting spot. The old gate, around the building foundations and anything that could have been dropped from the dam or bridge would be worth a swing.

I would agree, although the water levels are getting higher now.

Hi Mark. I would have loved to have seen that. I could not find much info on the reservoir history. I suspected it must have happened before.

@@withalens6449 They had to ferry water 24/7 down from Cumbria in tankers and dumped it off the Motorway bridge into the dam, new roads were purposely built to do it and the hard shoulder was used as parking for the tankers, that was just East of junc 22. where the boats sail

In 1989, the body of a man was found at the bottom of the reservoir during a period of dry weather, when the water was 40 feet (12 m) shallower than normal.[13] He had been murdered and his body was weighted down with a pick axe. The crime was featured on Crimewatch and remains unsolved.[14]

The water there goes a fair amount higher than when I went over on the 9th of September. The water didn’t reach the new bridge at all.
