  • Connecticut's Farmington River stands tall up against any trout system in the Northeast. The river, only a short drive from Hartford, is loaded with rainbow and brown trout. In this episode of Pautzke Outdoors we teamed up with Joe Diorio Guide Service to learn how to catch trout on this exceptional water and invite you to join in on the adventure.

Go to the green bridge in Pleasant valley. Check out the regulations because they are different in certain places. What doesn't change is how loaded with fish the river is. Tightlines my friends. P.S.- learn to fly fish !!

I lived in simsbury for 4 years, near Farmington river. But didn't get a chance to fish, because I was not keen at that time. Hope I will fish one day

We used to call that spot the Ovation pool. A little ways upstream is a area called the Boneyard. Really good there for fly fishing.

It's only a fly reel, the rod is a spinning rod. Not sure why he has chose a fly reel. The only thing I can think of is it is just what he prefers and maybe it keeps traditional fly fisherman from having chest pains if he was fishing with a spinning reel. You will find fly fishing snobs on most popular trout rivers. I fish with a fly rod 90% of the time, even in salt water, but don't care what type of gear others use.

Great fly fishing river. Spin fishermen should go to a different river please. Thanks

Thanks for asking kindly, but we will enjoy the river, like all anglers should.

I have thrown flys on rivers from coast to coast. The Madison, Missouri, Gallatin, Big Hole, Yellowstone, Bighorn.. and my home base river, the Farmington, I fish it 4/5 times per week most months, I love it and bought a new home in Farmington so I could be close to it. I have no problem with people fishing w spinning gear. I do have a serious problem with fly fisherman that frown upon and look down there nose at anyone that is not fly fishing. Most people that fly fish started with spinning gear & eventually tried fly fishing. Joking, semi serious, whatever, everyone has the right to fish with a fly rod or spinning rod. The only rules in my book are:
      Carry the proper license.
Follow the rules of the river i.e. if you are fishing area the calls for baroness hooks, catch & release.
Do not leave trash & always leave the water better than you found it when possible.
Don't be a snob or rude to other anglers.
Promote fishing and sharing your knowledge of it.
      Tight lines everyone.

I have thrown flys on rivers from coast to coast. In Montana, The Madison, Missouri, Gallatin, Big Hole, Yellowstone, Bighorn.. In Colorado, the Blue, the Rio grande and many others all over the the Gunnison,& many other lakes, rivers & streams across the U..S. My home base river is the Farmington.
I fish it 4/5 times per week most months, I love it and bought a new home in Farmington Ct. so I could be close to it. I have no problem with people fishing w spinning gear. Carry the proper license.
Follow the rules of the river i.e. if you are fishing area the calls for i.e. barbless hooks, catch & release.
Do not leave trash & always leave the riverbank better than you found it when possible.

Upcountry sport fishing is the premier shop on the river in New Hartford. A beautiful shop that I encourage everyone to check out when in this neck of the woods. He sells rods, reels, line, flys, lures, live bait, you name it. His buisness would probably be a lot less profitable, or fold completely if not for spin fisherman and that would be catastrophic to all abglers in or visiting the area. Welcome to my home waters, enjoy and take good care of the mighty Farmington and all the spectacular trout she holds.
      Tight lines everyone.

@@TeamPautzke I absolutely agree. I was just being facetious. Spin fisherman are harassed in certain parts of the river ,but if the regulations are on your side enjoy the river and don't give them any reason to mess with you. Be courteous, pick up your garbage and take care to not kill fish. Good luck.

what is the point if you let all the fish go. Strange, I think!

It's for sport if everyone of us kept them all there would be none.

If you are harvesting legal size fish and not taking more than the daily limit, fine. Too many people keep fish, haul them around the river for hours bouncing from place and bye the time the are cleaned, they are probably not going to taste very good or may not even be safe to eat depending on how long they weren't kept cold for.
Then we have the fish that end up in the freezer and then in the trash can.
As long as the rules of the state are followed and we are all good and responsible sportsman, i see nothing wrong with enjoying a nice trout supper once in a while.
