- 'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red' was a work of installation art placed in the moat of the Tower of London between July and November 2014, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.
It consisted of 888,246 ceramic red poppies, each intended to represent one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War.
My lyricist friend, Rod Barry, was so inspired by this beautiful work of art that, not only did he purchase one of the ceramic poppies from the display, he also wrote these words and asked me to put them to music.
We hope you like it.
Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red
Remembering our glorious dead
Ceramics of a pretty flower
Stood proud around our ancient tower
Young men were shot young men were gassed
What have we learned this century past
Not very much it seems to me
When will the conflict cease to be
Scarlet poppy flower of peace
Flower of peace a force for good
Scarlet poppy flower of peace
When will peace be understood
We’ve filled the laws with human rights
It makes no odds mankind still fights
What should unite the world - religion
Is the cause of such division
Scarlet poppy flower of peace
Flower of peace a force for good
Scarlet poppy flower of peace
When will peace be understood
The weeping window bleeds its tears
Bright blossoms are our souvenirs
Of each precious soul that perished
Their memory forever cherished
Scarlet poppy flower of peace
Flower of peace a force for good
Scarlet poppy flower of peace
When will peace be understood
