They confused Andres's sister with their wife. 😂 Ecuador is a country with very friendly people with a lot of capacity. I thank you for allowing me to be here.
Gomez won a grandslam tournament and provided joy for a nation and tennis fans; you wrote an aphorism and provided 0 meaning to his victory since aphorisms are meaningless by definition.
Not bad, considering Agassi was apparently more worried that his cobbled together wig might fall off at any moment. His brother, who rescued the aforementioned hairpiece, when it started to fall apart the night before, apparently told him it would hold, IF, he didn't move around too much. You can see the hesitation in Agassi at some points in the match, and the way he tried to keep his head still.
This is the way Gomez always should have played. He is a big strong man, hit big serves, big forehands, flatten out the backhand, finish points at the net. He was too passive often for the size and weapons he had but not here.
His main problem at Roland Garros went by the name of Lendl. They played four times, and Ivan won them all. 1990 was a golden opportunity for Gomez in that regard, with Lendl skipping the French in preparation for Wimbledon. Agassi was good, but not quite the caliber of Lendl.
What a great day for Ecuadorian tennis. Andrés Gómez is the best on court and off court as well. That's something that can be said about only a few champions such as this fine gentleman.
This is my personal opinion about this. Getting bald is really really traumatic I know that for a fact. And if you are a guy that use to have long hair in your youth trust me it sucks even more. Now Andre in his first years of the circuit was very revolutionary for his rock star looks, every body remember the image is everything commercial from Canon. And I understand totally trying to find a way to hide the baldness. Andre Agassi is my favorite player ever. Nadal and Federer are on a league of their own. But I always enjoyed watching Agassi play. He was extremely talented and his career full of ups and downs in my case make me feel a lot of empathy for him. When he won Roland Garros after been 141 it is one of my favorite sports moments ever. However the wig history is BS to me. If the wig was damage or falling, any balding dude in the world will do the same specially in tennis ... WEAR A CAP there is no explanation why he just didn't use it or a bandana etc. Like it or not Andres Gomez won this match fair and square there is no need to take this away from him.
How does he explain having an absolutely monumentally magnificent mullet, a truly tremendous Tennessee top hat, a seriously second to none shorty long back, a one of a kind Kentucky waterfall worthy of a king the day before the final to just a ball cap with no sign of hair anywhere the day of the final?? It's absurd to think people wouldn't suss out the truth within 10 seconds of seeing him. He would've have been made a laughingstock the world over before he got off the court. Realistically his options were withdraw or chance it with the wig. Casually humiliating one's self in front of the entire world is a slightly unreasonable expectation of somebody in my opinion.
Ive been watching the mens finals of the French, going all the way back to when it was first being fully televised here in the States. And I actually cried when "Go-Go" won...because I had lost count of how many times I saw or heard that he lost to Lendl at Roland Garros. Lendl to him was what Borg was to Vilas..and just like what happened to 'Willie" that one year that Borg didnt make the final because he skipped it, happened here to Andres, when Ivan skipped the French in 1990. It was just so apropos that Andres won..especially when you remember how surgically he took apart Muster in the semis..after that match, I KNEW that he would beat Agassi.
It was well played by Gomez. For his talent and range of strokes, he should have won more grand slams. His forehand is a feast for the eyes. So glad to revisit this match after 31 years
Thanks Perts , I've been searching for this game for years!!!! Gracias Andres!!!! Le ganaste un grand slam a kien posteriormente se convirtio en una leyenda del tennis mundial!!!! Muy pocos sudamericanos lograron lo k Andres hizo !!!! THANKS CHAMP!!!
Gomez was a very experienced clay court specialist, who probably would have made a final or two if it was not for Lendl. Unusual for a specialist he actually had an effective serve. He was also came in more to shorten the points.
True. Reactions by Agassi fans are usually quite unfair: Gómez was a vastly experienced player, with almost twenty singles titles and dozens of doubles titles, including a US Open, who came into this tournament as the number 4 seed having won titles on clay a few weeks prior (unlike Agassi by the way). So here we have the number 4 seed beating a player just one spot above him in the ranking, on his favorite surface and with a brilliant strategy. Impressive? Yes. A massive shock or a choke by Agassi? No way.
Andre Agassis has said in is own autobiography that his wig cost him this match, that is not a joke by the way, like many men he was traumatised by his own hair loss and for years had been wearing a wig, an expensive one made of real human hair, on the morning of this match he had technical problems with the attachment system of the wig, it was not staying on properly and the adhesive surface of the wig had become water damaged, so he was suffering great anxiety because he was terrified and anxious that his wig would fall off during the match, that caused him considerable distraction of his concentration. People may laugh at that and dismiss it as a joke but it is right there in his own words in his autobiography.
chris mac nevertheless Andrés Gomez was better on the court, no matter what Agassi could have said about this match... I'm sorry but that just sounds like some stupid excuse.
Thanks for the upload, Agassi says that in this match he was not concern about the tennis result because the night before he had a problem with his WIG, and they had to find awkward ways to fix it onto his head. His main concern was that the wig might come off and he would look ridiculous
Agassi mentioned that he was wearing a wig to hide is baldness at age 19. His wig fell apart just night before the final and his brother joined it again using 20 hairclips. He played below par since he prayed not to win but that his wig won't fall off...
He said "Jim Courier who beat Agassi in last year´s Championship [not final!]", and indeed Agassi lost to Courier in the third round of the 1989 French Open 6:7, 6:4, 4:6, 2:6.
what i want to know is, which year did Andre start wearing the wigs? Was he using fake hair as early as the '88 Open when he had that great win over Connors? If that hair wasn't real i'm going to be seriously disillusioned.
@@lucytaylor8844 of course , if it wasnt a wig you would have seen a transition from him having a full head of hair then with some hair loss/thinning then then suddenly having hair again ( the wig) . It's not rocket science !
Ok, yeah, Gomez beat Agassi and yeah, Agassi claims that he was preoccupied with his fake hair. I’ll say this, Agassi is the hall-of-famer with not just multiple Grand Slams but a career GOLDEN Slam (all 4 majors, plus Gold Medal at the Olympics) so I’m gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say that had he not been worrying about his weave, maybe it’s a different result. And of course, it’s not to say that sometimes you just have a bad day, regardless of preoccupation with something else lol and maybe that was the case on this day.
@@mehmeh5471 I read his autobiography, too and have seen his interviews (even if he was just joking). He blames the hair. He didn’t start taking his stamina more seriously until after he basically hit rock bottom, well after his 90s prime and before the 2000s renaissance.
