    This will probably explain any questions you may have about the designations of some of the animations.
    Firstly, yes there are specific conditions that trigger each animation as you see in the video. For physical damage weapons it's dependent upon who moves first, for magic it's the tier of the spell. There are instances that will cause these rules to not apply, usually this is because of distance to the target which will cause the initiation crit animation to play in a situation where it should've been the counterattack crit, this is because initiation crit animations involve the unit moving forward to close in on their target. You will see this most often with Paladins who will usually create a large enough gap between them and the target after they initiate (a combination of them pushing the target back as well as retreating a bit themselves) that the target will almost always play their initiation crit animation, at least as far as I've seen.
    Second, you may notice that aside from infantry and cavalry, all movement types are missing one of either axe or sword animations. This is not a mistake, at least not for the most part anyway. Pegasus classes, wyvern classes, and armored classes including Great Knight use identical animations with swords and axes, with the exception of combat arts which are separated but this is not a combat arts video so they are grouped together. Really the only reason pegasus are shown using swords while the others are shown using axes is because I just think it fits better.
    Those clarifications aside, there may be additional questions so I'll do my best to cover as many as possible here.
    Probably the biggest one: "Why are you grouping throwing axes with swords?" Main reason is that all throwable axes use sword animations, you can see this more easily when having a Swordmaster hold one. Admittedly this decision is rather arbitrary as there are no throwable swords anyway but if there were they would use these animations, hence why the throwing axes are grouped as swords.
    However you will notice that armored classes, wyverns, and Great Knight don't do this. That's because, as stated earlier, axes and swords share animations in those classes, and while it's also true for the pegasus classes, they are not associated with axes the same as armored classes and wyverns are. Again, a bit of an arbitrary distinction by me.
    "The Levin Sword and Bolt Axe are the only magical weapons are the only magical weapons of their weapon class, why not name them specifically?" Initially I was going to, however these same animations can be triggered with other weapons in the same class by way of the counterattack skill, the retribution gambit, or holding the chalice of whatevers.
    "Those gauntlets weren't the magical ones" Same case as above pretty much, except that, yes, the magic damage dealing gauntlets don't have ranged attacking capabilities at all. However there are still ranged gauntlet crit animations hence why they are included, even if magic gauntlet is technically not an accurate name I chose to remain with the naming pattern established with the other weapons.
    "No bow knight?" No unique animations sadly, they are identical to normal cavalry wielding a bow. Ironic since the Great Knight ends up getting special bow animations due to its shield.
    "Did Dedue really take 0 damage from a crit from the final boss on the hardest difficulty?" Yeah.

      I'm pretty sure the bow knight has one unique crit animation. The long range animation has the rider twirl the arrow several times before shooting it. I'll have to go play the game again to be sure. Great video.

    This was really well done! There were only two crit animations (off the top of my head) that were missed.
    1) Claude has his own unique animation when he attacks at range (yes, it's different than the typical bow animation when at range.)
    2) The Immaculate One is missing a crit animation. Not sure if it's Silver Snow exclusive, but there is one.
    (You can ignore the following if you'd like)
    Funny typo:
    Great Knight Bow
    Long *Rang*
    Also, I have to wonder if rather than putting Dark/Holy Knight when using magic, you put cavalry magic. Only reason I bring this up is because the Death Knight class exists.
    Lastly, while I'd say adding Archbishop is redundant since she just borrows Lord and Warlock animations, I understand why you still did since people would probably still complain about her absence anyway.
    (But damn, I guess she's really angry in part II, huh?)

    • @GeneralForster
      @GeneralForster  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Aha, most of these were oversights on my part. There was actually another typo in the pegasus section where I forgot a space as well. In the case of the Dark/Holy Knight thing I was going to call it cavalry magic but then remembered Valkyrie and simultaneously forgot all about Death Knight, I guess because it's so similar to Dark Knight and the one Death Knight in the game doesn't really make the best use of magic. Probably will call it Cavalry magic next time though.
      And...I actually didn't notice that Archbishop's animations are the same as the Lord class...
      Actually I didn't even know Warlocks used the same sword animations. Interesting, but kind of strange considering the Lord and Archbishop are both special classes that are actually meant to use swords.
      Not to disappoint but the final edition of this video currently has no ETA. I expected I would have to update eventually because I was sure I missed something even with as much RNG manipulation as I went through. The reason I won't be updating the video for now is because if I just went through and triggered the remaining handful of animations I would still have to go back later and redo the whole thing anyway because I think the community deserved a 1080p version and currently I can't provide that.
      Annoyingly enough, despite the switch's capture system being literally built into the console itself, not only is it completely unable to capture images and video in some games, but it is only 720p even though the switch is capable of 1080. I would need a capture card for that and don't have one right now. Rest assured it will happen eventually, and your comment has given me some animations to be on the lookout for as well. Thanks!

    I do believe melee battle animations are grouped in three categories:
    The first one triggers when the target is at a certain distance and normally includes closing in the gap by walking, this is the one that usually triggers when the unit initiates the attack;
    The second category triggers when the two units are close to each other, being the one normally seen in counterattacks since the opposing unit has already gotten close;
    The third one includes dodging attacks, which only trigger when the unit has dodged an attack, can counterattack, will hit the target when counterattacking and won't get a crit;
    Then there are the continuation attacks, which combo after any other attack.
    I have made these assumptions mainly by observing the gaunlet animations. In that specific case the "closing in" attack corresponds with a forward right-handed punch, the "close distance" attack consists of a right-handed uppercut, the "dodging" attack is a kick and the "continuation" attack is a left-handed hook.
    When a brawling unit attacks and doubles an unit that cannot counterattack it first closes in with the forward punch, the follows with a hook that comboes into an uppercut that then leads to a second hook, which fits with the presented model.
    I believe critical attack animations are set according to this rather than with the unit starting or countering the attack, except with ranged units, that seem to decide which one of their animations goes depending on wether they are in a ranged battle or a close-quartered one.
    As a final note I would like to add that I was also led to interest in this topic by the great knight animations, while remarking that the "closing in" category is the one seen most of the time since three houses units tend to push each other and jump backwards a lot, which leads to classes like edelgard's emperor, that have many cool animations, but an horrendous "closing in" animation, that makes them look stupid, a thing I still resent.
    Best wishes

    • @GeneralForster
      @GeneralForster  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct about the triggers for the animations. To be honest, I boiled it down to calling them "initiate" and "counterattack" because I couldn't really think of anything better to call them, plus it's a little quicker to explain it like that, and since most people are coming for the animations themselves rather than an breakdown on how they work, I decided to save the lengthier explanation for my pinned comment. Beyond that you're also right on what you've noticed about other animation triggers, such as the dodge attack.
      Typing this out now, I'm sure I had more to say but it's a bit late and my train of thought has left me, so I'll just finish by saying that I really could talk for hour about this game, but I don't often run into people who would appreciate that, haha. I've considered doing videos on class rebalancing, rewriting some of the routes, etc. but I think 3 Houses discussion is more or less dead now.
      Glad there is someone else who appreciates Great Knight like I do, even if it is a bit underpowered (:

    I'm here coming at you again re: bows, this time hopefully much more succinct than last time:
    The Magic Bow has a different crit animation in all movement types (infantry, armour, cavalry, pegasus, wyvern, great knight) only using the "initiating" animation - this will always play when hitting a unit two spaces away, regardless of who actually initiated combat (n fact, the particular animation used by an infantry unit with a magic bow is likely the basis for Byleth's neutral special in Smash - they look almost identical).The long range and counterattacking animations are unaffected, and are the same as they would be with a normal, non-magic bow. The infantry crit animation *does* override the unique crit animation used by the sniper class (only initiating; counterattack and long range are normal sniper animations). I haven't tested if it overrides Claude's personal crit animation. I will edit this comment if I do. (Edit: it does override his animation)
    Claude does have his own unique long range bow crit animation, which is missed here. I haven't tested if Claude's part 2 classes also have their own long range animation, separate from the other wyvern classes, but it is likely that they do. The same applies as earlier - if I test this, I will edit this comment. (Edit: Claude’s wyvern classes do have a separate long range crit animation. Additionally, the magic bow also overrides the initiating crit animation and replaces it with the generic wyvern magic bow animation)
    Additionally, a small correction of your pinned comment: the bow knight class *does* have unique attack and crit animations. Its animations are not the same as regular cavalry.

    I discovered recently that there's a different crit animation when someone uses a Magic Bow while riding a pegasus. To test whether I was actually imagining it or not, I used a training bow and landed the crit, and it played the pegasus bow counterattack animation (first hit didn't crit, second did), then divine pulsed and attacked the same enemy from the same square with the same unit, but with a magic bow, also landing the crit on the second hit, and the animation it played was different. It was very similar to the long range bow animation, and I'm not sure why it seems like the magic bow has different animations while riding a pegasus. I don't know if this same thing applies to other mounts.
    For your information, the unit in question was Annette, and she was a falcon knight class. I don't know if this affects anything (like if the pegasus knight or dark flier classes use these same animations). I have posted the clip on my channel

      Hello I'm here again to inform you that I experimented a little more with this, and determined that the Magic Bow works as follows:
      - If the distance between user and target is 3 or more squares, the crit animation will always be the same as the generic long range bow for that unit's movement class
      - If the distance is only 1 square (the units are adjacent), the crit animation will be the same as the generic bow counterattack for the movement class
      - If the distance is exactly 2 squares, the animation will be different to the two standard bow crit animations that appear in this video for each movement class. If a non-magic bow is used in the same square attacking the same enemy, the animations played are the ones listed here as "bow initiating"

Plus even with the recycled animations through all the characters, that never stopped all the characters from having there own personality. So I'd say animation wise this game is pretty great!

    I love how trickster normal magic attacks they use finger guns, and when they crit, they pantomime shooting a shotgun or rifle XD

      @@GeneralForster Probably, but it kinda looks like the palm didn't connect to the foe. Still, pretty badass, initially thought Byleth punched the enemy at first, which would be a lot more badass

    I went through Cindered Shadows a few days ago, and on the level you get the Ashen Wolves, my Constance got crit immediately and died when fighting one of those magic horse dudes. Aura does give a decent crit and Constance’s luck as far as I know isn’t the best, but still it was dumb lmao.

    Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Hero class also have unique axe critical animations? It's been awhile but I could have sworn it did.

    • @GeneralForster
      @GeneralForster  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly no, it uses default axe animations. I would've preferred they at least had it use Warrior animations, if not unique ones, but no, Hero sadly gets nothing ):

    • @Elendieldunadan
      @Elendieldunadan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GeneralForster Bummer. I do really like the animations in this game. I don't think I'd be upset at all if the next FE installment re-used the Three Houses engine and assets if it meant they could spend more time polishing, expanding and balancing these classes.
      Great job compiling all this!

    I finished an Elden Ring challenge run not too long ago and have been working on playing through maddening mode in this game before three hopes comes out. Probably won't happen. But I did notice a similarity between the Warrior class axe counterattack crit animation and the stormcaller/thunderstorm ash of war in Elden Ring. I wouldn't doubt it was a nod (along with "Those who live in death" being another one) given that this game seemingly nodded first with Byleth's "Ashen Demon" moniker. I wouldn't have minded seeing others strung together in Elden Ring like the saint counterattacking crit animation. That one is a beautiful combo attack.
