1980 NBA All Star Game ⭐️ Bird & Magic ROOKIE HIGHLIGHTS from the lens of a LA #Lakers Boston #BostonCeltics perspective. - กีฬา
That game was awesome! 100x more exciting that today's NBA!
Absolutely!!! It’s like a clown show in comparison, it’s a me me game now, it was a We game then.
it was harder to score when trying to do a eurostep or crossover would be turnovers.
Back when The NBA all star game really Matter.
Defense at an all star game, what a concept
I really miss those all-star games where players care about defense. Making serious efforts in steals and blocks.
The insane million contracts i think messed it all up. 😮💨
And Team play instead of Me play of today.
Good to see a young, athletic Dennis Johnson from his Seattle days.
Love DJ, even as a Supersonic, sad that he passed so young.
He was awesome all around baller.
He was always clutch
Back when an All star game was an All Star game
Present generation players changed their definition of the ALL-STAR game. It became purely having fun.
Bird once said dj was the best player hes ever played with and its easy to see why in these old clips man dj was a versatile player in his prime years
I think he said that he was the smartest, not best.
@@LarryKnipfing he said the best!
DJ was always clutch
Needless to say, this was a loaded all-star game. Both teams seriously wanted to win it. Wish I could have been there. Bird made a difference in the last few minutes of this game in more ways than just hitting the shots. This was a sample of what was coming and was already there to a degree.
Bird missed the game-winning shot in regulation. I’m sure he was pissed about that. He then came out in OT and dominated the game.
Man, the Iceman still look way smoother than any of the current NBA players of today.
Yes, wish we could bring up entire games of real basketball era
People that say that Bird isn't at least top ten just need to watch footage of him playing. If they can't see the greatness and uniqueness of his game then they are blind. Any player in this clip here would be all-stars just as they were then. What player today would be able to stop Kareems sky hook?
Bird is my personal 2nd GOAT very close behind MJ.
Top 2
Nobody said that
Well said
Rookie bird made big shots, great passes, boards in ot...as a longtime Celtic fan this looks familiar
Hey Leo 👋
@@irishgrl hello!
Larry burned the blueprint of his game. I see no one plays as intelligent as him.
@@darioabrador9085 Yes. Rick Barry was just a little behind Bird, in the over-all stats department, and court vision and savvy. Bird was the best of all to watch play the game, not just to score, though.
Dennis Johnson was super good during 78-80.
I coudn't beleive my eyes seeing Dennis Johnson flying up and down the court, blowing by defenders with the dribble, I only remember him from his playing days with the Celtics and he was nowhere near as good as he was in this all-star game.
He always was later he and Larry just complemented each other
4:55 check this traveling call. A good example of how they’ve made it easier for the offense in the modern era; this extra step is never called in 2023.
Gervin didn't take "this extra step." That was not a travel.
I honestly don’t think it was a travel. lol. Bad call.
@@JAWrightonline That was INDEED an extra step the way traveling was called in the ‘70s… thanks for making my point for me.
@@NBAHistoryCLNS it got called all the time back then
@brianfergus839 What extra step? Where is the third step? George Gervin only took two.
Larry Bird touch pass late in the game, was the best play of that entire season.
🤔
The times were GREAT then..and Larry and Magic were the saviours of the league. That no-look slap pass Larry gave Iceman was..woooowee 😉👏☝️
Back when the NBA was still worth watching. Loved Brent Musburger and Hundley on the call.
Now it’s a watered down league that caters to lebum
The nba is awesome so much talent
Nailed it, the me game of today sux. Quit it many years ago when it became SJW platform for Chyna
Larry wasn't just playing basketball. He was also playing football hockey chess and billiards.
Lary bird 🐦 was definitely a hard player to guard. Because he was so fast and can definitely pass the ball and shoot 🔫 and score wowwwwwww
Bird even as a rookie making a difference to win the game.
Bird should had won MVP fir that game. His play in overtime was special.
Julius Erving is insane. Some of this stuff he does isn’t normal even now
Larry is the best one-touch passer ever.
It’s uncanny
Jokic might have something to say about that comment.
@@uncletony6210 Jokic has nothing to say about that
@@jasonirby3023 you might want to watch a game or two..
@@uncletony6210cognitive dissonance…describes those people who watch Jokic dominate the league, but who also claim that Bird wouldn’t be just as dominant if he played today.
Thank you for sharing as I never saw this all star game. Gotta love Bird = always wanting to take the last shot and even though he missed it , he more than made up for it in the overtime period!
Yeah he was so clutch in the overtime !!
The full game is avail in our recent vids section or just click here: th-cam.com/video/8z2f5kIjyJI/w-d-xo.html such a great game.
Gervin was soooo good. Smooth as glass
We used to say Gervin's game was icy glass... 😂😅😂
They didn’t call him the Iceman for nothing 😂
Just a bunch of GOATS 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
Doing what GOAT'S DO
That precise point in Basketball's evolution from Dr. Naismith with a Peach Basket to today's gymnasts in jerseys when the big time still included solid fundamentals and was truly Big, so you'd never get that traveling call on George Gervin today.
DEF not in an exhibition game haha
@@NBAHistoryCLNS I watched about 3 or 4 times, I didn't see a travel. Ref blew that one.
It was so great to hear Hot Rod Hundley making the call. He was and will always be the voice of the NBA to me (lifetime Jazz fan). He was the best. We always could tune in and hear Hot Rod and Ron Boone as we drove around, went camping, etc.
Hundley is one of the few play by play guys that could do color commentary too, and he could call entire games by himself without even needing a partner
I love that there is actually some defense.
The Doctor steals the show for me.
At 1min 40sec left (9:30) in the overtime period, Larry Bird made the first 3-pointer in All-Star Game history. 🎉
The REAL nba
When players cared about winning every game... even if it didn't "count".
Right, it wasn’t a me show of today, it was a team show.
That was when the All Star game was just the game and no other garbage!!
NBA players notoriously travel all the time, but that was a bad call on Ice. Looked like two solid steps to me. Also love that tip pass from Bird!
The original Euro step haha
I always had to rewind and see that again. Refs were very strict before about travel calls but that one wasn't travel.
Traveling is rampant in the league today as well as palming. I'm sorry but the Euro step is traveling also, plain and simple. Using your off hand to fend off the defender (Lebron is a master of this) is rampant. Since you can't touch anyone either, is it any wonder the defense is soft in the NBA today? The offensive player has all these unfair advantages.
They usually called that traveling back then. Especially if it appeared as if the trailing foot was dragged even a little while going up for a slam. 😮
Even as a rookie Bird showed how clutch he was. In overtime he hits 2 long range bombs from the corner. 1 being a 3. Then he makes 2 amazing passes including the beautiful left handed tip pass of a rebound. He just did things to help his team win no matter what it was
I thought same exact thing. He had a pretty bad game but when it was on the line in the 4th, even as a rookie, Larry wanted the ball.
Not unlike Magic Johnson
@@coryburns9161 Without a doubt !! They were both such difference makers right from the start !
@@bryanburnap4537 👌 👍 that's right
@@NBAHistoryCLNS m\oron
Any player would be good in any era, they would just adjust to their times... Like, you know... LIFE
I have the very same sentiments. Game rules and technology are the big differences of eras. And human are best at adaptation. I always take those into account whenever i go in to some arguments about era vs era. Just imagine a Kyrie Irving only allowed to dribble with his hands on top of the ball, i'm sure he would still find a way to adapt but his game will be a lot different.
@@dervish816 Kyrie would kill in any era
I watched this game when it was played, Dennis Johnson had a great game and might have won MVP if the west would have pulled it out. Great NBA all star game from 1980.
DJ wanted that mvp. I’m so glad to see so many comments pointing out how good Dj was. It’s one of the main reasons i decided to do this series of all star games; mainly to show young ppl great players (forgotten) like DJ, Big E, Etc
I also thought DJ was really gunning for it. He was awesome.
DJ was an all-time great. His defense on Magic Johnson in the 1984 Finals was huge. He was clutch for the C's, and with the Sonics he could really get up, blocked a lot of shots. Bird said he always knew DJ had another gear when the going got rough, and was his basically his favorite teammate.
Great Video and thanks for the post! The uniforms give this a Washington Bullets intra squad scrimmage feel, lol. No doubt, Larry Joe Bird and Magic were all time greats! It was cool seeing The Iceman balling out there, George Gervin was an elite scorer for about 5 season. Guy was just silky smooth and I loved that little finger roll he had! I was 11 years old when this game was played and as I watch it now I notice there is much more defense than the modern ASG. Adrian Dantley was another awesome scorer in his day.
Back when the Rockets and Spurs were in the East and the Bucks and Bulls were in the West. Good times.
Larry. End to end. Muah 💋
playing defence in an all star game.... imagine that.
I don’t even watch all star games anymore. They aren’t competitive. This was good to watch
OMG that no look tap pass by Larry Bird😊😊👌👌 . Both Larry and Magic showed even in this game why they would end up being all time greats. DJ is so slim and trim here looking so healthy and good. I saw pics of him before the heart attack and how he looked then. I wish when these guys leave professional sports that they could find a way of staying fit. DJ, Moses, Darryl Dawkins so many of them die young from things like heart attacks 😒😒
Basketball players are prone to have heart troubles early bc of their size and weight. Anyway, DJ was so athletic back then. He lost his athleticism in Boston fast but needed it less. Rip
Sometimes fitness is not enough.
Even with a healthy lifestyle, genetics can bring you down.
@@NBAHistoryCLNS
Julius Erving is still alive
@@cooper482011 I sincerely hope he keeps on living for many years, I'm concerned about him and the other NBA ballers pushing the vaccine -not good! The "authorities" push a very dangerous vaccine while simultaneously smearing what works ----> Ivermectin.
I miss the capital centre, many a good shows I've seen there R.I.P.
I started watching n 1969..todays nba is tough to watch...bird is probably the best all around player ever
DAMN THAT BROTHA CAN PLAY!
1:07 beautiful
LOVE you guys AND this channel!
So nice to watch, no reservations
Dennis Johnson!
i wood luv me one of those basketballs from back then
This was the Game 👀 look at all of these HOF players
Back when the All-Star game wasn't scripted and they took pride actually trying to play defense and running an offense not just dribbling up and jacking up a 3. Much better quality basketball.
Exactly
Damn straight! Miss the old NBA, can't stomach this new version.
Bird playing to win
Crazy how competitive they played back then in these games. Just a list of all time greats in this game. I was trying to write down names as they flashed across the screen. Folks may not have seen Walter Davis or Dan Roundfield play but those were some bad dudes. Same with Otis Birdsong, Michael Ray Richardson, Elvin Hayes, John Drew. OMG! Also, we use to laugh at the geography. San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets (Gervin and Moses) played for the East. Marques Johnson (Please help me understand why this dude isn't in the Hall of Fame yet) played for the West and he played for Milwaukee. As kids, we use to laugh at that setup. But it was nice seeing a young Larry Bird, Dr. J, Iceman, and Moses on the same team.
The all star game used to decide home advantage in finals... Who got 4 home games.... + competitive pride.
@@rahowherox1177No, no, no. That stupid rule was in BASEBALL.
5:08 they were so strict on traveling then because nowadays this looks like a clean 2
I started watching the nba in 1978, never missed an all-star game since.
That's about when I started watching too, but we moved overseas 79 to 82 so I missed a couple years.
Same here, I started in '78 as well. I was 13 years old at the time and watched college basketball too.
Funny to see
1. Bird not starting.
2. Bird shaking the hand of Dr. J. (Probably first and last time)
3. Bird stepped on the out line making a turn over.
4. Bird missed the clutch winning jumper.
I'll bet that missing that clutch winning jumper haunted him for a good long while and pushed him to improve. :)
8:58 Bird missing the game winner! But he would then be the difference maker in overtime.
Facts
Wait for it
Thats when the Nba was the real deal! Awesome times sure miss it!
Tiny Archibald was old here but he still flew down the court.
Iceman didn't travel on that dunk
Omg 😲 wowwwww this was a serious (All star game
Nobody touched a weight back then. 😂
Gus Johnson was so powerful, he became a verb. When he dunked on you, you got "Gus Johnsoned."
It actually looks like a basketball game. Unlike now.
33 = Larry Legend
30th all star with first 3 point line. Spurs and Rockets final season as the Eastern Conference, Bucks and Bulls as the Western Conference as well.
Moses Malone played for the Houston Rockers from '76 to '82. How is he suited up for the Eastern Conference in the 1980 All Star Game?
Houston was in the Eastern Conference until 1980
This was right after magic Johnson dominated Larry Bird in the NCAA college finals Indiana State against Michigan st and magic won the national championship for Michigan st that was the beginning of magic dominating bird on the hardwood believe that
That was a real all-star game....today's NBA should take notes, it's not rocket science
4:56 Gervin goes up for a dunk 2 steps , traveling!!! lol Now they get 4 or 5 steps depending on who you are.. crazy how his dribble dribble pick up ball 2 steps dunk. Whistle and called travel.
Johnson still dunking!!!
Larry larry larry
Looking away rebound pass.
Bird and Flagg are the best players ever.
Back when they played defense
Even at the all star game. Haha
Unlike today, it's actually a real game
ICE MAN!!!! ASG MVP!!!!
Notice how the players don’t walk when dribbling
They actually called traveling back then
3:56
How many times were Erving Earvin and Gervin on the floor at the same time? 😝
Back when the game was legit, not a sideshow
If only the 1973 Virginia Squires had been able to hold on to Julius Irving and George Gervin, that team likely would have become so good they would have made the grade to join the NBA some years later when several teams from the ABA merged with the NBA.
Everyone wearing Washington Bullets unis
Yup.
Bird is the GOAT. Because his skin is light he gets disrespected
4:56 Back in the day they called travels for no other reason than the steps looked awkward but were otherwise legal.
He traveled though. Guess what? The game had actual rules at one point. Shocker!
@@fatalsniper3413 I only see two steps on that slo-mo replay. And that is not adding a "gather step" that these dumb kids are saying.
Back when they really tried to play a serious game, not just run and gun show.
Larry Bird, the best white player with the best IQ in NBA history.
All Star Game uniforms should go back to using the template of the host team’s uniforms.
The difference of intensity, athleticism and defense compared to an nba all star game of today, let’s be honest there is None.
Larry MF’n Bird
at 6.33 Bird tells Dr. J to retire. (7 years too soon)
Imagine if Dr j and Moses Malone played together all of their prime like magic Johnson and jabar...bird and magic Johnson history would have been much different... maybe a title a piece... sixers would have dominated the seventies and the early eighties
Imagine if DJ had come to the C's earlier and the C's had kept Westphal as well. Many what if's to consider...
@@buckchile614 that's still not enough to beat the doctor and Moses Malone
@@jennifersalva3573 Well, add Bill Walton to this hypothetical mix and it's game over!
@@buckchile614 well if you do that we'll just add Jordan... LoL
@@jennifersalva3573 what ifs and buts, and almost, don't make dynasty's or win championships but fact is Magic and Bird saved the NBA from going bankrupt
This was a real treat. High energy. The West looked good I thought they were gonna win. Great to look back on the legends when they were young even Kareem was hustling up and down the court. Lol. The Iceman got MVP with 34 points.
How bout Moses with the block on Kareem’s skyhook.
How about everything you mentioned, and all that hustle… all in an all star game. No gimmicks, no circus routines, no concerts, fireworks, pyrotechnics, streamers falling from sky, sound effects or superstar antics. Just 24 of the best ball players in the world, putting on a show for their fans by wanting to win at any cost. Miss those days too
@@NBAHistoryCLNS Yep there was nothing like it
Denzel Washington at 4:19 was a great player before becoming an Actor.
80s all star games show that stars wanted to beat each other....they are trying, playing, ....WHAT is going on today with all star game? Why does anybody watch them? I haven't in a decade.
Only 43 years ago.
Like the great champion that he was, Bird made up for the mistake on the shot that could have won the game already in the 4th quarter.
