    This was awesome and I'd love to see more of this! Some possible ideas for future episodes:
    - -Find someone named Abigail and slingshot them with an egg-
    - Make mayonnaise from an egg
    - Go around offering random people a Stardew gift of your choice until someone accepts it (bonus points if it's a universal hate in SDV)
    - Dig for an artifact (anything counts as long as it's man-made)
    - Build a chest out of wood
    - Ride a horse
    - Pick any (or several) SDV recipes and cook them
    - Grow 15 parsnips
    - Sew a pair of purple shorts

    massaging plant roots is actually good for them! especially when they're rootbound, helping the roots break out of the dirt mould they usually end up in encourages the roots to spread out! some plants actually like being stimulated, sometimes it'll encourage them to grow faster :)

    The issue with tomatoes is that they're unbearably finnicky little shits who will sometimes just die for seemingly no reason because you couldn't give them the _exact_ conditions they wanted but then sometimes you'll completely screw it up and they just don't care and it's infuriating.
    Also they take so much damn water.

    • @anonymouschaos6416
      @anonymouschaos6416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @Yes I remember when I was a kid, back in the '90s, we had grown three tomato plants. Other than the initial twice-daily watering we did as the young plants got settled for the most part we didn't water that much... and we live in a semi-desert. Your tomato plants, if they were outdoors, may have been getting enough water just by being outside but when you watered it, it was too much and you might've suffocated the roots. If you had also used mulch then accidentally drowning them by overwatering is very possible.
      We eventually got rid of the tomatoes because they _wouldn't stop_ *_producing_* and we ran out of neighbors to give buckets of tomatoes to, on top of the buckets of tomatoes for ourselves. Should've kept one.

    • @anonymouschaos6416
      @anonymouschaos6416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Yes Hey, maybe the next time you try growing some, maybe you'll also drown in buckets of tomatoes too. :D Good luck to you if you do.

      Sounds about right. One year my family had tomatoes that were doing so well they nearly collapsed from producing too much. Not even a tornado took the damn things out. I don’t know what finally did them in, my dad may have just trashed them. Lol

    Charlie, if u want the cupcake in the slime jello, you could do a couple things.
    1.) fill the bowl about 1/2 of the way and let it set in the fridge. Then place a ramekin or something small on top of the set jello and then fill the remaining jello up to the edge of the ramekin and let the jello set again. Once it’s set, remove the ramekin and now you have a hole to place ur cupcake in, then flip with a plate on the bowl so you can control the flip.
    2.) Fill the bowl 1/3 with jello, let it set, then wrap the cupcake in plastic wrap and place it on the set jello, then fill the bowl with more jello right at the point of the cupcake floating, let the jello set, then fill the rest of the bowl with jello. That way it looks more suspended and the cupcake also won’t crumble with the liquid. I bet tho you could freeze the cupcake and do this same thing and not use the plastic wrap tho. But make sure u flip with the plate so u have more control!
    I have not tested these suggestions, however, so disclaimer. Good luck!! Thanks for the video! Super cool to see a face reveal! Hope to catch a livestream again later!

    • @anonymouschaos6416
      @anonymouschaos6416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      You wouldn't want to use plastic wrap on the cupcake - the last layer of gelatin would melt the plastic. I figure a combination of a complete covering of icing - cream cheese frosting holds up to heat pretty well and is commonly used on carrot cake - and being in the freezer prior to the final gelatin pour might work. Adding a thin layer of gelatin that's almost ready to set to cover the cupcake and chilling it before adding the rest of the liquid gelatin would probably also work too. I believe there are cake recipes that have a gelatin layer on top of regular cake so maybe if Charlie wants to try again she could check out some of those first.

    Cook a meal with one of your selfharvested tomatoes (bruschetta might be a good choice)
    Make pickled vegetables
    Give a present to a random villager ("Thank you! This looks... special")
    Use a copper pan (or whatever...) to gather one item of trash out of a river and put it into a recycling bin (to make Linus proud indeed)
    Eat a raw parsnip to regain energy. (yeah, it's edible)
    Almost forgot.... you should craft a scarecrow to protect Victor and Trevor)

    Regarding your newfound plants, methinks one of the big issues with their initial life in your home is that those pots are just simply too large for the size of the plants you purchased.
    Typically you get a pot that's 2-4 inches larger than the pot it was living in previously - assuming that it's not hella rootbound (i.e. when the roots have reached the bottom, curled into themselves, and made a nice cylinder of pure root mesh because there's nowhere to go). As the plant grows and gets larger, you replace the pots with the next step up.
    When the pot is too big, you tend to run into a couple of issues:
    1. The area the plant (and its roots) are in, are depleted of water quickly because it's trying to survive the repotting processing and starts sucking in resources as fast as possible to help repair damage. If you've accidentally planted in a too-big pot, a small dose of water directly at the plant's base whenever it starts drying out immediately around it will help here (a stick or a finger poked into the soil near the plant at this stage should come out like brownie mix: if it sticks, it's still too wet).
    2. The rest of the pot that's not immediately in the presence of roots is still likely to be quite wet from the last watering. Dark, wet, and full of nutrients is the perfect environment for microscopic organisms, mold, fungus, and other things that baby/sapling plants really do not like and likely can't defend themselves against.
    3. That nice wet surrounding area that isn't drying out due to the lack of roots sucking up the water is likely getting compacted by the weight and moisture. This makes it harder for roots to expand into that space, especially if you're a tiny sapling with little baby roots for babies.
    4. That same reason also means the soil isn't getting aerated, which surprise, plants also like air and weirdly enough have decided that the part not exposed to the air is a great place to absorb air from. Normally worms and bugs would be doing this part, but since its in a pot, it needs your intervention. Mixing perlite into your soil when you're first making the new pot will help prevent it from getting 100% compact, but you should also consider taking a thin stick - like a chopstick or thinner - and poking a few holes through the soil. Say, once a week or whenever your plant needs water. This will provide channels for the water to flow into and that will bring air down into the soil with it as well as break up the soil in a few places to prevent it from getting entirely settled.
    Entirely aside from all of that, congratulations on being an optimally made human. You're charismatic, funny, _and_ pretty all at the same time, to a level many would consider unfair. Next you'll tell us that you also speak 10 languages, can play the cello at the symphonic orchestral level, and that we should make way for you on the path towards humanity's next evolutionary plane of being.

    • @CharlieBarley
      @CharlieBarley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh my goodness thank you for the tips, I'll definitely try these out!! My mom told me to get the biggest pot possible so I don't ~limit their potential~ but I didn't even think about the mold/compaction/etc. Thank you, thank you!!

    • @IceMaverick13
      @IceMaverick13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CharlieBarley Yeah, no problem! The pots they're in now are typically the 2nd, maybe even the 3rd pot I'd personally transfer my plants to if I had bought crops at that size.
      If they've adjusted to being in those pots already and don't continue to look like they're dying, you might be able to get away with just keeping them in those pots for quite a long time with proper care.

    Just a heads up, the "short pine needles" are probably hemlock needles (not pine). Both are usable as teas, but hemlock tends to be more flavorful during the spring when harvesting the new growth on the plant.

    • @herimperialmajestyempressf82
      @herimperialmajestyempressf82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not to be confused with poisonous hemlock, that's a completely different plant, just wanted to clarify... (Tsuga (/ˈsuːɡə/,[3] from Japanese 栂 (ツガ), the name of Tsuga sieboldii) is a genus of conifers in the subfamily Abietoideae of Pinaceae, the pine family. The common name hemlock is derived from a perceived similarity in the smell of its crushed foliage to that of the unrelated plant poison hemlock. Unlike the latter, Tsuga species are not poisonous. (Wikipedia is my source.))

  • @ezeetezee4825
    @ezeetezee4825 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    “massaging” the roots is actually good, you were doing it correctly. you usually do this when the roots are root bound, which is when the roots have no where to go and circle around at the bottom over and over, that when you need to “massage” them, so it becomes more loose. dont do it too hard though, as that can damage the roots. :)

    When you went to massaging the roots you were kinda on the right track when moving a plant to a new pot
    I found this on the internet so take this with a pinch of salt
    Get your fingers into the base of the root system and gently loosen them up. Consider it like a relaxing plant massage. It will help the roots establish themselves in the new, larger pot. If you are repotting because of pests or disease, now is the time to try and remove as much of the old potting mix as possible

    Hi Charlie!! I don't know if you have many geologists who follow you, but I am one! Cracking open geodes can be a lot of fun but it is equally a LOT of work. I definitely recommend some chisels (or even a flat head screwdriver). You put the flat end on the geode and hammer the other end, it helps concentrate the force into a line for a clean break and with less effort/frustration. I've cracked open a lot of geodes and this is the best method I've discovered. Also, goggles are important! You don't want sediment in your eye.
    Also, quartz is the dominant mineral for geodes. The three varieties you mentioned have slight differences in appearance: milky quartz is white and more opaque, smoky is grey to dark grey, and 'general' quartz is clear. There are metallic varieties of geodes tend to have a darker outside appearance and are much more difficult to break open (since there isn't a hollow cavity), but highly rewarding. Amethyst (purple) geodes are significantly rarer and that's why they're usually pretty pricey!
    Thundereggs are very hard to open. Even with my rock hammer and chisels, it took be a good thirty minutes to make an even break through and I definitely smashed my fingers a few times.
    Okay, that's all. Love the content, love stardew, love outdoors. Enjoy your pretty rocks. [: (Sorry for the long comment, love a chance to talk about rocks).

    When I was little, my dad took my family back to MO, where we stayed for half a year. It was fun, we got to learn fishing, cooking, sewing and animal keeping as well as gardening from his cousin. Gardening is fun and calming, keep it up 😁 Good work and awesome video idea!

    Charlie: *holds up a box of carrot cake mix*
    Also Charlie: Oh, it has like pieces of carrot in there... that's kinda weird.
    Cracking geodes would've gone better if you had placed the geode on a hard surface, such as the road, before attempting to open them. Remember, Clint is standing at an anvil when he cracks them open for us.
