appreciate you taking the time to do a comparison video. I wish you would have just the guitars by themselves. It's very hard to hear the individual characteristics of the pickups when they sit so well in the mix. The differences tend to be so subtle with the bareknuckle pickups to my ears. Until you got to the miracle man and the lundgren. But the others sounded so similar and they shouldn't.
It matters elmo.....because I can't hear the tonal differences as clearly with these pickups as well as I could if he just tracked the guitars by themselves. They sit in the mix so well I find myself only hearing the track. Rather than being able to hear the differences in these individual pickups. And say I like this pickup over that one.

Our ears think the same! I have them in the same order, Painkiller, then Lundgren M6 and then the Angel Dust. Exciting is the perfect term to describe how I hear the Painkiller. BTW, Just got the BKP Painkiller installed in the bridge of a PRS SE Custom 24 and it really turned this inexpensive import into an instant "I can't put this durn thing down" favorite guitar. I Love the BKP Painkiller. I was perusing BKP's website and I am gaining some interest in some of their P-90 style offerings. Great company, excellent customer service and a truly amazing pickup!
One hundred percent. Painkiller then the m6 and for thicker thump the holydiver. The aggressive in your face mid on the painkiller is as you say "exciting"
Motor City Pickup Detroiter - best on the bass-mid/bass response. Motor City Pickup Angel Dust - best on the string separation BareKnuckle Nailbomb - sligtly behind MCP Detroiter Congratulation for this clip. Awesome sound
The nailbomb was so djenty... Those mids o.o I came here to compare the Warpig and the Painkiller and was blown away by the Nailbomb. I wasn't even considering the Nailbomb until I heard this.
Every time I watch these bridge pickup comparison videos; I find my ears perking up each time the Bare Knuckle Painkiller comes on. It's doing something (good!) for my ears. I plan on getting the bridge version for my new PRS SE Custom 24 (the very BEST value priced import guitar I have ever played). I just installed Dunlop Straploks, and I have a TUSQ XL nut on order, along with PRS locking tuners. I think the BKP Painkiller bridge PU will finish off an awesome budget player.
@@paulanthony8335 I just picked my guitar up today and played for a couple of hours. The Painkiller is a Revelation. I'm a low output late 70's kind of player (SD'78) and this pickup can apparently take whatever amp, gain stage or playing style and make it sound.....just BETTER! Imparts a glassy, FM, professional tone (in a very good way!). Does EVERYTHING exceedingly well, and does passable Metal cleans, not too clean for the bridge version anyhow but I prefer a little hair on clean for live performance anyhow. It's hard to explain but I just fell in love with Bare Knuckle pickups TODAY. Really changed the PRS SE into a Firebreather with proper manners if that makes any sense. A LOT of money for a pickup, IMHO worth every red cent.
They honestly sound too close to really choose one over another. If you played the video and didn't label them no one would pick what is what you could probably say u were using the same one the whole time and 95% wouldn't argue with you
so true. I put this video playing on the backround while I was searching for some other shit, and at one point I just noticed I'm thinking "when is the next pickup gonna be on".
There is something in amp settings that is just dominating the pickups own characteristics probably just strong settings, usually on handwound or specially voiced pickups you can dial an amp to pickup's own flavor . i did even on a line 6 HD300 head, matched to a bareknuckle aftermath's own sound and it came through adjusted to allow the pickup's own voice and was awesome and still is no matter what amp i plug into i can find it.
I was digging the Lundgren M6 because of that low end thump you get from them, but i really dig the Motor City Solution as well. 🤔 pretty bright sounding while keeping those dynamics.
Angel Dust for the win there. 2nd fave was the nailbomb then warpig then the other Motor city pickups. But its always hard to tell cause i generally prefer nailbomb over warpig slightly in recordings but live i prefer the warpig by a mile. I do have an angel dust 7 sittimg here been dying to put in something and try...
From what I could hear in this video, the Nailbomb is my favorite, and then the Painkiller, then Angel Dust. The rest didn't appeal to me all that much. I'm not saying that the rest are equally good pickups! Just based on this track, with your guitar/strings/tuning/etc.. the Painkiller had a nice bite to it. I felt the Nailbomb had a fuller/smoother sound, but still enough bite to make the individual notes in the riff sorta "pop." Also liked the Angel Dust for similar reasons, but just like a tier below. Kinda liked the Detroiter too, actually. I find that Lundgren M pickups work much, much better for lower tunings. Pretty sure they're designed for Meshuggah.
I really wish Motor City Pickups made 7 and 8 string humbuckers, that would make my life! That way I could have some hometown vibe in all of my guitars. To me the best sounding and most responsive are the Afwayu and Solution pickups both are moderate output with alot of mid-range punch and are pretty clear for how meaty they sound.
I'd go with either the Nailbomb, Lundgren M6 or the Motor City Angel Dust as the top three. The Lundgren has a lot of girth. But I think I like the mids of the Angel Dust and prefer it's overall sound.
They definitely all sound different. The nailbomb has a lot more saturation and more bass. The lundgren is pretty bassy, too. I'm digging the Nailbomb. This tone is killer, man. What amp/settings/signal chain etc did you use?
I notice some small differences - the warpig has this super meaty sound. The ceramicnailbomb has clearer highs (and is still meaty enough). The Painkiller is almost as meaty sounding as the warpig but with extra mids. The Holy Driver has less mids and more high mids than the Painkiller. The Miracle Man sounds similar to the warpig with less meat. The M6 has added mids... But at the end of the day, you pulled off similar tones. For the record, I liked the Nailbomb and Painkiller best.
It's a test on how they sound in a mix, that's why there's a full mix. The raw tracks would be good to hear but it'll never sound the way it will with a set in your guitar
I would say the Holydiver is the roundest. The Nailbomb is also nice with beefyer lows and smoother mids. The Painkinler sounds the tightest. Miracle Man the most scooped.
Hi, what bridge pickup would you recomend me for my PRS CE24, If I wanna tighten bass response of my Orange Rockerverb 50 and get chuggy rock/metal sounds, but not muddy...I like the ceramic feel and I love Gibson 500t in my SG...would you go Painkiller or Warpig (or Nailbomb? I dont like it as much tho)...which one is closer to 500t or better...thank you, regards
Really incredibly hard to hear the differences isn't it? Could make out some differences between the Warpig and Painkiller though. Painkiller would probably be better suited as a neck pick up and warpig for bridge?
That's a superb comparison. And REALLY shows difference between pickups. Not like one tunes set up that suits to one pick-up and then everybody shout that other are shit. If you can listen to pickup, you'll hear difference. For example - after BKP pick attack sound disappeared, Lundgren and MC is bit less defined. Also in most of BKP samples each notes separates more. Holydiver is crazy mid-pronounced and rounder on bass side... I mean I've tried almost every pickup here and this example correlates with my experience on 100%. I know people expect day and night difference like in Fluence demos around web, where they just hear much more output and shout how it is better. Great review! KUDOS!
I think the only way i would be able to tell the difference in the sound is if u would play on all the pick ups without any drums or bass to the track.A riff without backing would do.But anyways it was a great vid and great playing.
Something is wrong here, when you listen only to the music (not watching the pic), even in HD I cannot hear a difference AT ALL. I happen to have both the Nailbomb and Miracle Man here at home and they sound different. I suspect this was recorded with a digital modeller and amp sim, that makes everything sound the same.

So similar, all differences are completely negligible for high gain, especially if you consider the range of modern mixing EQs.
all this shit for 1% difference!

MC Angel Dust gets my vote.
the fact that all the pikups sound the same might have a lot to do with the high-gain amplification combined with youtube's compressing.

By the way, is there any way we can find out what the signal chain was here? Was this through and amp...a modeler...plug ins...what?
Was this played through a Kemper or some amp sim? Because apart from Holy diver and Detroiter they all sound way too close.
Change your amp settings; distortion covers up all nuance and difference.
