The lower Everglades bordering the Gulf has had signs for at least 30 years warning not to eat the fish due to high levels of Mercury, which is a potent neurotoxin.
Fertilizer and pesticide runoff is a major contributor to red tide, in part from agriculture, and part from manicured waterfront lawns. We get Mercury and even radioactive waste from mining, and we have an EPA that carries a lot less weight than all the heavy metals entering our watershed.

My wife and I knew something strange was going on with the fishing and overall lack of marine life down in the Keys this year. We spend six weeks on Grassy Key every Jan and February. We are more active than most, getting out on the water every day, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, windsurfing - and this year I added fishing to the list - from a small 16' fishing boat to both fish and snorkel. In years past, we saw way more spotted eagle rays (only saw one this year) shark and other marine life... I hit the fishing hard for 6 weeks ... we caught nothing inshore, and very little out on the patch reefs. I knew it was unusual. Coffins Patch reef looked dead when we snorkeled it. We also noted all of the dead sponge washing up from Long Point Key state park to Bahia Honda...

Yes, it has been recently found that fish have magnetoreception, but since it's something that's only recently been proven, mainstream science does not know to what extent exactly. But I think this is a strong possibility that should be investigated, since they already tested the water for toxins and pathogens.

Maybe unrelated, but I saw another story where animals and fish where acting erratically. A concerned citizen called it in and the police dispatch said to them that they'd had many reports and it was likely due to the fact that many drug users had been testing their stuff for fentanyl and flushing it when it tested positive, causing fentanyl to leech into water and be consumed by animals.
Very interesting comment. Water treatment plants can only remove bacteria and maybe some viruses but not any pharmaceuticals. Which is why pharmaceuticals should never be flushed down the toilet but taken to a facility that will dispose of them properly.

Can someone please call them and tell them it's fentanyl that people are flushing it through their toilets when they're testing their Coke in Florida it's happening over here in Los Angeles there's plenty of Coke in Florida
That's actually plausible.
@@doug6784No, it isn't remotely plausible. Drug addicts don't flush drugs down the toilet, they use them. If they actually test, which is very rare, they'll just use less of the substance than before or find someone to sell it to. This is a total myth.
@@PlaySA no it's actually true the wildlife specialist said that's why in California our wildlife coyotes and raccoons are acting weird and flipping around in the same manner as these fish... Because they're drinking the water that runs off into the ocean... turd.
@@PlaySA A smuggling boat that didn't make it to shore. Packages slowly leaking on the ocean floor? Oh what am I thinking it's just climate change.

I have an American Flag Fish in my fishtank (in PA). They’re native to FL. It has also been demonstrating this spinning behavior lately.
Wow that's crazy fish in tanks are doing this too eek!!
Do they pick up the magnetism from our poles?
Is your water quality still good?
@@weterra4927 I try. No ammonia spikes to the best of my knowledge. It seems to have cycled - I’m not getting blanket algae anymore but sometimes I get green spot algae. The other fish seem happy.
@@weterra4927He’s not doing the upside down swimming or corkscrew swimming like in the video. He erratically makes circular movements but stays right side up
Would wifi and satellite signals do this to animals? You would think that the birds depend on earth's natural magnetism would be affected by all these synthetic signals all over the place. I don't know, I'm not a scientist, but it makes sense to me.
Of courses that fishing supply store owner is going to downplay the issue with the unusual activity of the ocean creatures.
This isn't hugely surprising to anyone that keeps up on all the crazy stuff happening to the water down there.
It's Florida. How ballsy is it for them to question the source of all this. We've literally been warned for decades about climate shift. Seeing those fish reminds me of water toxicity. I keep fish. The smallest change in that water balance and it will affect everything in it. Notice how you can see the red streaks on some of the fish? That's their blood veins and it happens when there is too much ammonia. Something is very wrong. The extra heat is just making it worse.
climate shift, never heard of her -- what change in the water balance, you mean the part connect to vast oceans?
I don't even know how to respond. Um, I'd say go read a book on the delicate balance maintained between swamps and marshlands and how the ecology is changing exponentially quick for the worse. I'm going to assume you're either a troll, or you live in Florida, where books with information inside them do not exist.@@Supertech-86

Hmmm, I wonder if it has anything to do with the increased number of boats, gas, oil and other contaminants in there?
sadly, more and more people go to they keys and dont respect it. it used to be paradise
How true. My family would spend the Christmas holidays in Key West in the early to mid 70s. It was paradise with Caribbean charm. I visited in 2018 and I was saddened with the water front condos and it is depressing to see what climate change is doing to the keys in general.
Also people do weekly burnout competitions in Florida. It just pointless pollution. Who can spin in circles creating smoke and destroying the environment better? It's almost as bad as Taylor swift
@asif75935 99.99% of scientists agree that Humans have altered the natural climate. Sure thing random person on the internet
@@MrEjohnston I was born in Key West, mid 60's. Lived there as a child & you're correct. Like many places, it's NOT the same. I also dive & had friends that used to go dive there in the late 60's & early 70's. The conchs used to be plentiful, not anymore.
It could be a Electromagnetic Low Frequency that could be making the toxic algea by modification and affecting the brains of aquatic species and mammals like wales. If that's the case, it is a plausibility that it could eventually affect humans as well.
As for having heavy metals in the water, it is concerning because some of those metals could be from off shore dumping of toxic waste in steel containers.
Another reason for heavy metals could be volcanic in origin. Another if found would be low emitting radioactive isotopes. Another could be from construction. Underwater tremors or earthquakes may release toxic gases and heavy metals as well.
Multiple pollutants building up over time and add warmer water than normal to grow toxic algae and bacteria, this is new state of the ocean environment. I remembered the fish tasted better thirty years ago.
I definitely remember packaged tuna fish and sardines tasting much better years back versus today.
Your taste buds probably worked better 30 years ago. Just like your eyes and your ears.

Makes sense.
Local bait shops owners insists that deep water fishing has experienced "no impact whatsoever" because people have only reported this happening near shore, where most people are.
FFS, maybe ask an expert about the impact offshore instead of a local with no knowledge and a financial incentive to downplay whatever is happening.
Did anyone actually graduate with a degree in journalism or was the news show you put on in 6th grade all the experience you needed?
We saw the exact same thing last year in South Africa, Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth, I was working in the Harbor when people called us to get out of the water because of a shark . . . the shark was no threat to us but had been doing the exact same thing as what I see here - I don't know if they got to the bottom of it but we saw it several times over several months and also seemed to hit the sharks first and then some fish. . . maybe contact local scientist who may have a clue or two?
Is it still going on or did it eventually stop?
@@heatherw.2751 I believe it ended as suddenly as it started, I`d have to find out, I am actually not there anymore. I recall the local chatter being that the scientists had no clue what was causing it - similar to this.
