The D Maj is actually D / F# Maj I do believe is what its called, basically its just the thumb on the 2nd fret of the e string with the regular D chord to create a deeper sound as well. But sounds fine with out it! :)
The strumming pattern is Down on the Bass note only, Down-Up-Down-Up, Down on the Bass note only Down, Up. Repeat this on all the chords for essentially the entire song. You can simply play a down stroke instead of the Bass note to make it easier (Howie does this in a few parts to mix it up). Try playing along with him while watching his hands and you'll start to sync up with him eventually :)
