    Expos in Europe seem to be a lot more professional than the ones I’ve been to in the US. I’ve never heard of vets checking the expos before hand, I often see animals with no source of heat, and I’ve never received a breeder certificate for either of the 2 snakes I’ve purchased from 2 separate expos. There are some similarities though! There are lots of different people at expos here, and common names are used frequently even for common species like ball pythons.

      Getting mites is super common at a lot of the expos around me ; o ; I was so worried about them that I purchased my first snake on Morph Market instead of the expo.

      I'm in PA and my local expo is great, I've been there a couple times and all the animals are very healthy, I geuss it just depends on if they are actually screening the breeders.

    Expo tips from a New Yorker:
    {ps. i’m going to the NY Metro Reptile Expo in september... so feel free to reach out to me (my name is Alexis and i’ll be with my dad)}
    -People are going to be nice, but their main purpose is still to get you to buy an animal, so don’t let any vendors trick you
    -If a vendor seems hesitant to let you hold an animal, there might be an illness that the vendor is trying to hide from you
    - Talk to people! Many people there will know what they’re talking about, so if you are too shy to talk to a vendor, just ask someone else your questions
    Good luck at your next expo! ✌🏽

    My expo tips:
    Keep calm, I damn near lost my mind when I had my foot run over by carriages and was pushed.
    Bring your own hand sanitizer, use if if you plan on eating at the expo.
    Take a list of what you're going to buy and a second lost of item you will buy if the items on the first lost isn't available.
    Get the vendor/ breeders business card, if you end up with a dead animal it will be your only way to contant the breeder.

    I'd been to one expo in North Carolina I believe, but it was when I was a teenager and I was more interested in the lizards than the snakes. I brought my friend to one in Massachusetts a few weeks ago because he had never been and was sort of on the fence about me getting a snake since we're going to be roommates. He had an awesome time and even built up the courage to hold a snake for the first time (a kingsnake)! He left the expo excited for me to get a snake. For my part, everyone was really nice and very keen to talk and let you hold the animals. Thanks for the tips! I'm going to hit the fall circuit when those roll around and see if I can't find a Mexican black kingsnake, my first!

    I'll be attending my first Expo here in California in a few weeks. Your tips really helped me be aware of certain things and answered some of my questions I had. For example I was concerned about the health of reptiles at these shows and if Mites could be a problem. I did not know that a Vet would do a check on the general health of the Expo before opening the doors. Very good to know. Thanks for sharing your wisdom on these amazing creatures.

    I went to reptile expo in Aarhus in Denmark and it was great! I bought there terrarium and some equipment for way cheaper than in pet shops/eshops. The only thing I didn't quite like was that the huge majority of the snakes there were ball pythons. I was looking for a california kingsnake and there were only few of those, so I didn't pick any. And you're right about the different languages - when I was buying the terrarium, I found out that the lady selling them was from Czechia, which is my home country, so we chatted for a bit and she even gave me a discount for fellow Czech :)

    My favorite expo is the expo in Næstved and it was actually the very first expo I attended :D I had dragged my parents and my little sister along and I had so much fun with talking to breeders, holding all kinds of animals I'd never met before as well as educate my family about the animals :) My mom actually got over her fear of snakes and held one for the first time at my very first expo and not even a year late I bought my very first reptile from the very same expo! It was so much fun

    I haven't been to a Reptile Expo in my city yet, but I have a feeling it won't be as professional as they are in Europe. I've never heard of vets checking all the animals or breeders providing certificates, even though I think both of those things should be mandatory at expos worldwide. I've also found (in my city) at other pet expos that the merchandise is as expensive if not more expensive than in-store. The expos in Europe sound so amazing 😍

    I went to my first expo not too long ago and it wasn’t the best experience. The only good thing was that I bought the best docile corn snake ever but the man that sold him to me was a bit rude and he over priced my pet. I was so excited to buy my first snake that I have prepped for months that I just bought him without thinking about how much I was really paying for the animal. In addition, another vendors snake had mites. Overall, the expo seemed a bit small for my area...I also couldn’t find anyone that sold mice.
    I hope to have a better experience next time.

    My first experience at an expo was in ohio US around November 2018 I went with my husband, stepson, son, and daughter in my belly we were looking for our first ball python we found a male black pastel my husband just fell in love with and our vendor was a mother of 2 older boys around 12 and 14 maybe who bred and raised these snakes and teranchulas with close supervision it was snowing and miserably windy outside, we had a great time and brought home a new family member our 3rd scaly friend copper 🥰 our second expo was just 2 short months later baby still in belly, my husband wanted a 6 legged buddy we ended up with a sweet girl (hopefully girl not confirmed yet) we named lucy she is a Costa Rican zebra teranchula we haven't held her yet because she wants to urticate her hairs at us not sure why but we still love her shes amazing to watch and observe and thanks for all your extremely informative channel you were a HUGE help in choosing new family members 😊

    Take note reptile expos differ greatly.
    My local expo is in Pittsburgh PA and it's great, all the animals are healthy, theres a good amount of breeders but it's not giant, and the breeders are very helpful. It's once a month too.
    Other expos I've heard are like this.
    Tons of breeders, little screening meaning there's many unhealthy, sick reptiles, and alot of the "breeders" don't know what there doing.
    Just be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

    This is really good info, thank you! I have a question for you/ the community: I saw a ball python with the description: lesser pinstripe calico and bumble bee - can that be right? Does that just mean that all of those genes are in there or that it’s a bumble bee and the lesser pinstripe calico is the more accurate description? Thank you!

    • @pugsabi
      @pugsabi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on the breeder. Without looking at the snake, it's difficult to say. It could mean that those were the parents. In America, it should say whether or not it's Her for a particular morph.

    • @pugsabi
      @pugsabi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anytime you see the word bee in a ball python morph it means that it contains the spider morph.
      Check out morphmarket to see the different morphs of different snakes. You can also buy your reptiles from that website (I'm not too sure how shipping works if your not in the USA), but I just use it to look at different morphs and compare prices.

I am soon going to an expo in Sweden with my mum and I really want a ball python, but she says that she doesn’t want rats in the freezer and her friend was a breeder and had horrible conditions and she doesn’t want that in our house. All I want is a single python but she still says no. Is there a way I can convince her? Is having rats in the freezer really that bad? I already have 3 turtles but they are not my animal, I don’t really enjoy them. She probably thinks I will lose interest in my snake but I have wanted one half of my life, while I only wanted turtles for half a year. Please help!

    My biggest tip would be dont just buy an animal because a vendor has it. From a horrible experience I had, I can say first had you do not want to buy from just anyone, and even if they are the only person with that animal you really want, dont buy it. Its all perspective, but if you feel that vendor is rude, shady, untruthful or just trying to push a sale on you then dont buy. Its also best you actually make a connection to that animal. I searched for a long while before I found the skink I truly clicked with and connected to.

    Europe does expos right. Here, (Canada) there's no vet check. I know this for a fact as one of the 'breeders' is notorious for having snakes with mites just all over them and occasionally scale rot. You're not obligated to provide heat for your animals. There's no certificates stating anything. Half the time the animals at the expos aren't even legal to keep without a permit in this province (BC has some very restrictive and definitely stupid laws regarding reptiles/amphibians/etc) which of course nobody checks. Which is initially how my parents found and got me my falsie when I was 10yrs old (I've still got her 20yrs later :)). They didn't know you need a permit for a FWC here and I was a kid who obviously didn't care. I've seen gators and monitors both of which aren't legal here (without educational permits)
