  • August 2022 Update:
    Watch this next about how to get your 3d drone model onto the internet for all to see and enjoy!
    • Share your Photogramme...
    Aerial mapping with your DJI Mini 2 drone is possible, now, in 2022! You don't need special SDK, software, hosting or subscription plans either. All Free!!
    I go over the steps of using WebODM to map a simple set of photos on a small waterfront property.
    This was a test project, with the intention of difficult shooting conditions in snowy winter landscape, and irregular captures from manual flight pattern.
    These are the results, impressive if you ask me! Totally feasible to make this an add-on service for realtors who want to showcase their properties and more of it's surroundings, on the internet. It is not without some challenges. Watch this video to see some more information about this amazing ODM - open drone map software!

    Probably the best thing I’ve seen from an open source software yet! I’m excited to start trying it out. I hate how to learn anything most of the time you need to pay ridiculous prices for software that you may not need. This will be great value in learning

      hey thanks for your comment! I agree - IMO open source is the way of the future!
      There are lots of other great open source solutions to all sorts of creative products, any suggestions of something else you might like to see next? video ideas can be tough.

    Really interesting stuff. I fly fixed wing, which is great for large open areas, but tricky (and overkill) for smaller, tighter spaces. Our regs mean that the Mini2 is the lightest regulated platform, so I wondered how easy it would be to use for smaller area work. This looks very promising, particularly if the waypoint feature of something like Litchi is used in combination to make sure overlap is well considered. The weather here has been dreadful, so I have managed to just experiment with the rear elevation of my house, by taking video and stripping out frames, and that seems to work too (although I haven't tried webODM in that regard). Amazing little machine.

    How how would I go about sending this in a file to someone? I want to see the 2d and 3d maps to someone in some sort of file. I tried the share button but it would pop up with the local host error. Lmk if you know how to. Thanks

      thanks for your question Mitchell. when you're in the 3d viewer, you should see in the bottom corner near where the share button is, another one with a circle and a down arrow, for download.
      You can get all of your file outputs here. some options need to be turned on during the photogrammetry phase to get all the file types available.
      I've got a video on the way about how to get these shareable online too since its a bit convoluted. been recorded just haven't edited it yet.

      @@cgardinerphoto Thank you so much. Got my first small job and I'm trying to figure out how to work everything. • @cgardinerphoto

      @@mitchellberger4699 yes you can definitely mix in different passes of altitudes and gimbal angles.

      @cgardinerphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mitchellberger4699 not a bother at all. happy to help - that's why I make videos like this.
      as for mixing sets - yes can be done.. but... you'll really want to work hard to try for matching lighting conditions. ie (a cloudy 1pm on both days - direction of sun, and if possible the type of cloud cover too)
      different heights should be totally fine. it may not make full use of all shots, and some may be extraneous captures, but shouldn't hurt the process.
      different gimbal angles, shouldn't change too much on an ortho stitched image, but if you're going for 3d anything, I'd recommend the variety of passes of different gimbal angles.

    Hi Chris, can you tell me what sort of elevation you were flying at, and what sort of gimbal setting (angle) you had, and what your photo interval (linear feet) was? Also, do you have insights as to what you need to have to make the contour lines work? I selected options of SDM: TRUE, DTM: TRUE, but it won't seem to generate this display for me (even though all other modes work, like surface and terrain models. Also, I have about 400 images from overlapping grid patterns (take from 250 ft at 80 degree down angle with 50 ft apart for each 4000x3000 photo), but I noticed that your count was 52 million whereas mine is only at 16 million. Do you know what settings govern that pointcloud point quantity result?

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks for your comment. Will do my best to answer your questions.
      Gimbal - two top down passes of 90 deg. The two passes drawing an “x” were a slight gimbal angle probably near 75-80deg. Elevation - I was probably around 60m.
      Photo interval - not applicable as every shot was manually triggered.
      Contour lines - I’ll look into and report back for you - not sure why mine work and yours don’t.
      As for point cloud density - there are a couple options. One of the important ones is octree depth I believe. And just upping that slightly should make improvements.
      The other, I can’t recall the name of but I think the default value is near 200-300K and you want to boost this one slightly as well. Boosting these numbers will improve chance of your system crashing during processing if you push too far.

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@turkeyphant provided your GPS coordinates are included in the jpeg info, yes it should work out locations on a whole load of photos - probably limited somewhat by your computer hardware's abilities too.
      gimbal angle, I've done top down @ 90 deg, which allows for minimal photos to be shot, but is best for only ortho stitching, and nothing 3d.
      if you're going 3d reconstruction, I'd suggest two passes one with a top down and one more askew.

    Is the dji mini 2 SE a good drone for mapping?

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. I haven’t used that drone specifically - not sure if the SDK that dji released several months ago included that model - but that would be the deciding factor of whether you can do automated flight planning with it.
      Almost any drone will be able to map small scale lots if you’re able to fly it manually though.
      If you’re just getting the hang of mapping it may be the perfect drone to get started with anyway and then upgrade once you know what you’re looking for.

    Hi! I have found that DJI mini 2 doesn't attach any coordinates to captured images and videos. You video title has the name of this drone, but this drone isn't supported for a such kind of works.

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Cosmo surfer. that's quite the anomaly. I can verify 100% I am getting coordinates attached in my photos, and this is how my point cloud was placed in the appropriate spot on a world map.
      on my videos - not so certain, haven't checked.
      I'm not sure what you've done, but your mini 2 absolutely should be attaching coordinates.
      maybe try a factory reset.

      @@cosmosurfer2022 seems like a reasonable explanation to me! no need to apologize. All the best!
      you should still be able to get a geo-referenced file out of ODM, but instead of relying on the coords from the photos themselves, you may need to set up ground control points, of known coordinates, and then identify where those points are in the photos for ODM. slightly more involved, but it should keep the software running as you require or expect.

    • @cgardinerphoto
      @cgardinerphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Raju thanks for your comment. Yes I’ll try to whip up a video outlining the process.
      It’s really about as simple as you can imagine it though - launch drone. Reach an altitude that matches the GSD you’re aiming for, point gimbal downward and move in a grid pattern while shooting. Most would suggest manual exposure. I’ve been able to get by without that but I do think manual white balance is crucial. All most software does is make consistent overlap for you but I’ve never had an issue achieving a good overlap manually.
