Death was a role he undertook, but underneath that, he's an immensely powerful being by himself on par with Chuck and Amara. Remember back in the Pizza Restaurant in Chicago? "I'm old Dean...". Maybe, just maybe he was fed-up. It seems to me that such a being would be supra-intelligent. That being the case; handing Dean Winchester the only weapon in the Universe that can kill him and then threatening his brother was a remarkably dumb thing to do. UNLESS, he wanted Dean to kill him. That was his plan all along. Presumably he would have gone to The Empty where he more than likely would have been powerful enough to wake and leave, then go do whatever he wanted to do, free from the burden of being Death at last. Billie took on the mantle of Death, but that's all she is. Her powers are just ones that come from being a Reaper and having the Death ring, she doesn't have anywhere near the juice of the Original, not even close.
Actually the only thing death ever feared was the Darkness. The fact that he broke his apathetic character to explain Amara to Dean showed that he was afraid of her getting free.

They didn’t really do much throughout S7 other than go around eating random people... I think it would’ve worked better had they not sidelined the Angels and Demons throughout the entire season...

Leviathans in S7 were a very smart and intelligent creatures BUT only under the guidance and leadership of their leader. They think smart and a long term plan. They want to cure all han from all disease just to make us fat and eat us. They even brokering peace and cooperation with Demon and Monsters and share their human livestock to them to use. And even then, they are quite powerful capable of killing regular angels and demons with ease. And no known other means of killing them throughout the season until Sam and Dean came across the Leviathan Tablet. That alone is pretty great concept. BUT, the way they made and stretched the story is bad and that is why we feel that we even didn't get any presence of the Leviathans. Season 6 also had a great concept by putting the spotlight to monster and their origins. BUT after they killed Eve and made Castiel and Crowley the bad guys, i felt it went downhill and underwhelming.

Death was very considerate to the owners of the house, especially when you consider the dead people in the pizzeria in his previous appearance he isn't normally so thoughtful about mere mortals; Im guessing at the time he had a certain understanding/compassion for those who were restrained/tied up against their will.

SPOILERS - - Cas didn't really run away here. He realized that he was wrong and he's vessel couldn't take all of these souls and he can feel himself slowly breaking. So he went back to Sam and Dean and Bobby, asking for help to get rid of the souls and return them in Purgatory. And so they helped (Sam not included... I don't remember where he is at this moment) but 'Leviathans', strong creatures so God lock them up in Purgatory, clung onto Cas. So the Leviathans took over and Cas sorta died :) I think I missed something. It's been so long since I watched this season and I based all of these by memory so I think this is not fully detailed.
Judge, Jury, Executioner. Did you notice how Bobby called him Your Honor. Dean offers chips him Death BEST IN THE STATE. The fear that the class of Death can present and he still eats the chips. All you could've done was invite him down to have a civilized conversation.

wrong death was no where near as powerful as he claimed. he claimed he was around possibly before god yet amara said otherwise she said death who when dean said death claimed something and she said to chuck" in the beginning there was only me and you" chuck and amara are the only 2 beings that can kill each other
houseofaction that whole theory makes no sense just because of the fact that the four archangels helped defeat amara, so they were definitely around and we know for a fact death is older than the archangels. Maybe he was just doing his on thing and stayed away from there troubles.

aside from this show, in the reliogion (this show is based on) itself, archangels are much older than death as it took time until the first thing with a short lifespan was created and therefore the concept of death was needed
acourding to the mithology/religion death itself is a servant of one of the archangels (angel of death) and therefore also servent of god which was created by god
at the end (that's before the day of judgement) death will reach all and kill all until only god and 4 big angels remain
then god will order his archangels to die and they will die one by one only until god is left, after them all the primordials which are portrayed as living beings will vanish so only god will remain in all senses posible
then he will recreate live starting from his archangels again and the judgement day will begin, that's when death will meet his end as god will remove the concept of dead itself and all that's left will be immortal souls, so death itself will die
back to this show, death is old, so old that he and god don't remember who is older acourding to death himself
but later on we learn that god is older than death and all primordials expect darkness
darkness said that it was only her and god, but that too is a statement from the perspective of darkness only
we know for sure that god was around when darkness was, but we don't know if darkness was always there with god or if she was created by him too
we also know forsure that darkness was there before death and so was god so death who doesn't remember how it was stands corrected

Cas didn't really run away here. He realized that he was wrong and he's vessel couldn't take all of these souls and he can feel himself slowly breaking.
So he went back to Sam and Dean and Bobby, asking for help to get rid of the souls and return them in Purgatory.
And so they helped (Sam not included... I don't remember where he is at this moment) but 'Leviathans', strong creatures so God lock them up in Purgatory, clung onto Cas.
So the Leviathans took over and Cas sorta died :)
I think I missed something. It's been so long since I watched this season and I based all of these by memory so I think this is not fully detailed.
actually the DVD commentary of this episode states he ran away, he didn't realize what death was saying was true until later on
