And as far as poachers roll up in their shop … betcha they’d be shocked … people forget that people aren’t scared of people and will pay a visit whether it’s done positively or negative …. I think the pussification of the world is at blame … the lack of morals aren’t there anymore especially in tattooing ….

I’ve given up trying to explain stuff like this to non tattooers. Poaching is a major sign of disrespect but the corporate world has trained most people to go along with their fucked up ethics and codes of conduct.

Had a similar happen to me once. He did the same and came to me with it, and I also confronted the other owner. 3 years this guy had been in the industry but walks in my shop and I take him on and finish him out and within three months he’s six months booked because of the shops rep. I just reminded him that he wasn’t worth them hiring him before he met me and I/we saw the potential in him. They passed him over and shit talked him until he got to the status he was at and that’s because of a rep that was built before he ever showed. And they wanted to take us down and divide us. He stayed because of that and we worked out the points he brought up for why he entertained leaving. This happens a lot here too, it’s a shame. I got in the game in 94 and never thought it would be like this. We all know why though
Really enjoying these, glad to know I’m not alone

Omg, this is such bullshit bro. Happens here too. And yes, you are lucky to have both Pipin and Bonsai. 🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇 there’s not her kind of poaching which is rife here in South Africa. There aren’t many artists trying to pay proper respect to the Wabori tradition and do terrible “Japanese tattoos”. This kind of poaching is different. I haven’t been tattooing for long, but I draw my pieces by hand. I use Ukiyo~E reference as far as possible and with a back piece it can take me up to 40 hours to draw and to hone so it’s ready. I don’t charge for the drawing. I can’t. This is South Africa and clients just can’t afford it, so I make my money back on the tattoo sessions when I tattoo them. I see this as the moment where I can justify all the hours spent drawing to the best of my ability at that time. Then I start the piece, the client has been made aware of the work and respect I imbue my process with and I expect patience and me and the client will get in beautifully. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere the client disappears for months. Try contacting……. GHOSTED. I start to wonder, is this a money thing? No the dude owns a gym…… is this maybe a pain thing? Could be, struggled on a few sessions but everyone does. I eventually find out that the client has made a trade agreement with another artist, who knows who I am, to give the artist free personal training in exchange for finishing my artwork. The artwork I spent 40 hours perfecting with love and respect. THAT is also poaching and has happened to me a couple of times. It’s so disrespectful. It shouldn’t just be the Japanese artist who aproaches his craft and his life with ethics, respect and morality. I just find it embarreaing

It's Capitalism. Money is everything. Profit is everything. It's justified under that rationale. As a society, we need to stop celebrating and revering the dollar and individualism (our self) and start focussing on community, gratitude, and service. Let's celebrate that!
