Been using RPG Maker for years now. It's great for people who are just starting out as it lets you make a full game without writing a single line of code. But once you become a more serious creator, you may want to properly learn how to code in the engine and using/making plugins, or just moving to another engine altogether.
Well said. I used RPG Maker 95, then 2000, and around 2002 I moved to Game Maker, after I realized I needed an engine that gave me more creative freedom. The skills you learn from using RPG Maker translate across to other engines and make it much easier to learn other development environments.

Dude I love the mug, commenting like 20 seconds in lol. Big fan of the Batman. I've also really enjoyed learning about video game design and development from your videos. Just an avid listener mostly right now, but might try at game development some day.
Thanks for making this video. I will download 2003 and start from there. I honestly didn't know RPG Maker was an engine. I thought it was more of a Super Mario Maker situation.
12:40 I do! Rotating saves are important! It not only somehow prevents from save loss, but also makes you be able to save-backtrack in case the latest save has an outcome you didn't like or so!
Totally! You know how sometimes you get a new party member, then you spend all your money buying them new equipment, only for them to immediately leave your party forever? Yeah...
Wonderful video. Thank you. I tried to get into game development via various routes over the years, but it was GDevelop that provided me with a breakthrough. It's open source and uses an event system (visual programming) i.e. if this is true > do this. You're still dealing with concepts like variables and expressions, but it's a lot easier than the big well-known engines (though, admittedly, less powerful). Until recently it was a 2D-only engine and you can make anything in it that you can think of. As a graphics and writing guy first, GDevelop has allowed me to take my ideas and begin to turn them into a game, whereas I was hitting a brick wall with other approaches.
I started with RPG maker 2000 when I was 12. I'm in my 30s now, and you're absolutely right with what you're saying about the important skills you can gather from RPG makers. From folder structuring, to dialoge writing, to level design, to battle balance and so much more. One thing I want to point out is the variable and switch understanding as a dumbass kid I made. It was just like finding real magic or looking behind the Matrix and I was so excited calling my friend with the discovery I made 😂
I always wanted to make games since I was a kid, and even tho I studied Computer Science in college, I was able to teach myself game development in Unity shortly before graduating. I've spent about 3+ years developing my first game and the early access version will be released on Steam in November. Wish me luck guys! 😊 PS. It's a game with very mature themes and content. It just kinda steered in that direction 😅
I have so, SO many fond memories with RPG maker 2000! Sadly, tons of games from back then no longer exist (or maybe are hidden away deep on some obscure forum). Even if a lot where unfinished, unpolished, or down-right bad, i still wish i could go back and give them a try. Little Big Planet shared a worse fate though. : /
Woohoo! I was absolutely in those RPG Maker forums and used a ton of RM95 and RM2k. We may have lost those games to time, but at least we got to experience for that moment in time. How exciting is that? Making my new game in 2K3 as shown in this video was very exciting, as I hadn't used RPG Maker in around 20 years.
I love RPG maker. I did a space ship combat game with it. Atm i am making a "Silver Falls" rpg based the setting and characters from Jerrels (sungrand) game series.
Fascinating info and informative I remember teaching myself Blender in 2012 to bad I didn't look into RPG Maker back then. Silver Falls reminds me of my favorite game Chrono Trigger.
Back when I was 13 I did play many of RPG Maker games. Vampires Dawn 1 and 2 are still my favorite games (the creator is from Germany but people translated both games into English)
Can you please talk about how to deal with feature creep? I am a newbie no idea what i am doing but i have failed to make any project because of feature creep and i cant stop
I will say for those interested: RPG Maker XP has 1 big interest, and that's Pokémon Essentials. Basically, some people made it so that you can create your own Pokémon games and they have done so on RPG Maker XP.
Here's an idea: how about a series of RPG Maker tutorial videos? Personally, I've been dreaming of making my own RPG since I was 17. This video really inspired me to try and make the plunge at 40. Btw - I'm having lunch with my parents tomorrow 😇
I started on rpg maker 2000 ages ago. Recently got myself a great PC and bought all the versions on steams summer sale and it was all very affordable. I love them all and I also recommend getting familiar with all of them to see how they evolved to this point and appreciate what we have now
@sungrandstudios it's super cool and kinda surreal to have a developer like yourself mention a gem like rpg maker. I hope your video creates more interest for individuals who just even want to get a start in a hobby or a career
Great advice👍. I started my game dev journey with GDevelop, even though I'm a senior dev. I just wanted to jump into the game design part and learn the other parts of game development that are not coding. Now I'm exploring other engines and the learning curve is slightly less steep.
I never knew any of this, and also its really cool that you have your own game you distribute for free. I wanted to make my own Pokemon fan game a few years back. Maybe i still should.
Oh, you absolutely should! You should be able to find pokèmon "sprite sheets" and "tilesets" online since other people have made pokèmon fan games with RPG Maker. As long as you don't try to make money off those fan games, Nintendo is totally chill about it.
That's great! Well here is where you can jump right in and get started creating right away. There are heaps of tutorials and help material online for all the RPG Maker versions so you will always have help when you need it.
About time, thanks And also, I agree, the wall I hit when I am about to transfer my ideas into game logic and design, are the game engine and tools it is I am trying to learn UE5, and logic of Blueprint to get by the basics first I thought transfering my 3D workflow into it would be helpful but it introduces more walls I think I have to start learn smarter and quicker to catch up, and just maybe play around a bit, and maybe try RPG maker for learning purposes
@@crisschan2463 thanks for sharing your experiences. That is the problem with those powerful tools; they are not set up well to help people learn core development concepts. I hope you'll try RPG Maker so you can developer your fundamental skills first. What you learn using RPG Maker will definitely translate across to other, more complex game engines.
I remember starting out with a half translated version of rpg maker 95. And soon after learning rpg maker 2003. It was amazing to help me in understanding code later in life. Sadly, after bouncing around in the game industry for some 10 odd years, I had to give it up. You wouldn't happen to be looking for a disgraced Unity developer by any chance? 😅
Saving on 2 slots, alternating between them, is the way to do it. Worst-case scenario; the game crashes during a save and corrupts the save file. I still do it today and always will with manual saves. Old school gaming habits die hard.
Point #1 0:43 The most important part of learning game development is understanding how to turn your thoughts and concepts into a functional product. This first step is far too complicated for most large studios any more.

Can you make follow up videos on what skills to build, things to know, overall sources to continue learning. The overload of information is crazy.
Your ties are getting better and better
Please make more videos like this!
Thank you for the this game developer video its much appreciated. Have a great day!
Dude I love the mug, commenting like 20 seconds in lol. Big fan of the Batman. I've also really enjoyed learning about video game design and development from your videos. Just an avid listener mostly right now, but might try at game development some day.
Mr. Rogers of game development
Yeah...
A game developer who enjoys playing games? What a time to be alive.
Thanks for the good end message.
I remember using RPG Maker 95 and 2000 back in high school, and I played around a little with VX later on. MZ looks like it's come a long way
Wonderful video.
It was just like finding real magic or looking behind the Matrix and I was so excited calling my friend with the discovery I made 😂
Love this exposure for RPG Maker! Been using it since 2016 and made a bunch of games!!
That's awesome! I grew up using RPG Maker so there will always be a special place in my heart for it.
I always wanted to make games since I was a kid,
and even tho I studied Computer Science in college, I was able to teach myself game development in Unity shortly before graduating.
I've spent about 3+ years developing my first game and the early access version will be released on Steam in November.
Wish me luck guys! 😊
PS.
It's a game with very mature themes and content. It just kinda steered in that direction 😅
Glad to see you brother, love the Batman coffee cup.
Great video. A lot of people dont really have a conception of where to begin, and think they need to be super elite programmers.
Thanks for interesting and valuable video as always ❤❤❤
Thank you for watching!
This is great info and advice. thank you for sharing this
Thanks for watching. I hope this was helpful.
Can you please talk about how to deal with feature creep? I am a newbie no idea what i am doing but i have failed to make any project because of feature creep and i cant stop
This is a great topic. I will absolutely make a video for you to address this. Thanks for asking.
I will say for those interested: RPG Maker XP has 1 big interest, and that's Pokémon Essentials. Basically, some people made it so that you can create your own Pokémon games and they have done so on RPG Maker XP.
Lol the coffee drinking in the beginning reminds me of something will ferrel would do 😂
Here's an idea: how about a series of RPG Maker tutorial videos? Personally, I've been dreaming of making my own RPG since I was 17. This video really inspired me to try and make the plunge at 40. Btw - I'm having lunch with my parents tomorrow 😇
I started on rpg maker 2000 ages ago. Recently got myself a great PC and bought all the versions on steams summer sale and it was all very affordable. I love them all and I also recommend getting familiar with all of them to see how they evolved to this point and appreciate what we have now
That's great. I used so much 2000 when it was new. The character creation system in the new versions looks incredible.
Bro deserves likes just for the Batman mug
Steam has a sale on most of the RPG Maker series on now
BATMAN mug!! How dare you flex on us! For shame,.. but still respectable.
thank you for the tips.
Thanks for watching. I hope the video was helpful.
Awesome! Ive always wanted to learn to create things like games, or write books or draw comics!.
That's great! Well here is where you can jump right in and get started creating right away. There are heaps of tutorials and help material online for all the RPG Maker versions so you will always have help when you need it.
damn i didn't knew this was possible, thanks master
Oh RPG Maker, kinda nostalgic as I tried some stuff with XP back when Vampires Dawn was big, or even before that.
I love RPG Maker, it's a great way of making games.
However, I might recommend starting with something like Twine, and JS.
That intro. haha Awesome.
Let's go keep them coming my dude
About time, thanks
And also, I agree, the wall I hit when I am about to transfer my ideas into game logic and design, are the game engine and tools it is
I am trying to learn UE5, and logic of Blueprint to get by the basics first
I thought transfering my 3D workflow into it would be helpful but it introduces more walls
I think I have to start learn smarter and quicker to catch up, and just maybe play around a bit, and maybe try RPG maker for learning purposes
Love that cup!
Hey, I also started with that half translated RPG Maker 95 from Don Miguel! Then moved to 2k. (At the moment, I'm not looking for team members).
@@sungrandstudiosooh, the Don Miguel translation!, you just unlocked some memories of early internet.Nice times.
making games in dreams on the ps4 is a good idea if you don't have a pc or programming is to difficult to start for you
the pavlovian response i have to the DING! in Everquest is too strong
Hahaha oh do I know the feeling.
Jokes on you, I got RPG Maker MZ earlier last year, and man is it useful!😁
It is awesome, isn't it!? It's got such great features.
Love the Silent Hill inspiration
I can tell you are a good son. Great ending
Worth mentioning that several times per year RPG Maker has steep discounts and bundle sales.
Saving on 2 slots, alternating between them, is the way to do it. Worst-case scenario; the game crashes during a save and corrupts the save file.
I still do it today and always will with manual saves. Old school gaming habits die hard.
Yeah, and there's always the chance you miss out on a really good missable item.
You can actually make a really good jrpg with that software.
I saw this video 10 years ago, with RPG Maker VX Ace 😊
Point #1 0:43 The most important part of learning game development is understanding how to turn your thoughts and concepts into a functional product.
This first step is far too complicated for most large studios any more.
Some day I'll try.
It’s a cool mug
