Hey coach! Great video! I really do enjoy your insights on the technicalities of football. Keep up the great work. I'm sure as this new season starts I'll probably have more questions for you lol.

    Coach,
I'm a rookie O-line coach for our 10u squad. I'm coaching myself up watching and reading tons of stuff.
I'm starting to study pass pro because I found out today we're going to pass a lot. Can you please explain the purpose of sliding one way or the other in pass pro? What are we trying to accomplish exactly and why is it good for pass pro?
Any tips will help. I appreciate your time.

For sure! Welcome to the ranks! We like to slide in pass pro because it’s easy to teach/learn, and leads to fewer missed assignments. We tend to “set the slide” towards the better of the two defensive ends, that way he has to go against olinemen and not a running back. If the ends are equal, we can set it to the field side or the QBs throwing arm, whichever he’s more comfortable with

      @@brianhawn889 Thanks for the response!
I understand everything you said. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the purpose of sliding though.
As an example: I've been learning blocking rules like GOD (gap on down) GOLD, and others. And from my studies so far GOO (gap on outside) blocking is good for pass pro. I understand blocking assignments also depends largely on the play call.
I guess my question is other than neutralizing their best d-end and it's easy to learn are there any other benefits to sliding?
Again... Thanks for letting me pick your brain and helping me learn.

@@frankthetank7338 Oh! Totally understand now. The reason we slide is because we run primarily zone blocking for our run game. That meshes really well with a slide protection, because the oline can share assignment teaching between the run game and pass game. We don’t have to double teach anything, like we would have to with gap on down blocking.

@@brianhawn889 Ah ha. I get it.
Unfortunately I don't really know much about our scheme. It seems the organization I joined is a bit unorganized. Practice started Monday (helmets only) and Monday is when I met my potential head coach for the first time. And even that isn't set in stone that that guy will coach the 10u. In other words I don't have a playbook yet
Long story short... I know I'm going to be an O-line coach 10u or possibly 11u since the commissioner already told me that. I've been working since Monday with 10u linemen. And so I'm coaching myself up to be the best O-line coach I can be.
As far as run blocking I've been focusing on the fundamentals like stance, get off, hand placement, footwork, drive blocks. But not so much about scheme blocking. I did introduce the concept of GOD blocking yesterday.

@@brianhawn889 But it sounds like zone run blocking is the way to go. I'm going to start digging into that along with more pass pro stuff.

Absolutely! It’s my favorite high school protection scheme because it looks like inside zone. The main drawback is the running back/defensive end matchup
