Cernit is considered to be a very high quality polymer clay used by doll makers. I think I heard that it is firmer, thus making sculpting with it easier. One thing to do with clay that has gone hard is to add a tiny bit of oil (cooking or mineral oil) and work it in. (Very tiny amount or the clay gets slimy. Also sculpey makes a product that can be added to old clay to soften it, but I think it is probably a kind of oil.
I'm looking forward to seeing this series of videos. I used to use FIMO when I was a kid, but now Sculpey is easier to get where I live, so I've mostly switched over, but I do mix my old FIMO in with my Sculpey when I'm making projects. It's worked so far. For baking I've always used the flat metal lids from frozen juice containers, since they are small, free (after you've made the juice), and stack up nicely when not in use. Sometimes I put them directly into the oven, and sometimes I put them on top of a baking sheet. I also use my ceramic button cutters for polymer clay cookie and cakes, since they don't have seams.
Julie Warren your welcome 😊 I have a few old clays too but also some new ones that have the problem😳 I also found that if it’s too soft to put it onto a couple sheets of printer paper over night and this will leach out some of the oils and firm it up 😊😊

Make sure you do a test with a small amount first. In addition to using wet wipes, I have a small ball of white clay I use prior to working. I roll it around my palms making sure I pick everything the wet wipes might've missed. You can use the wet wipes to clean and smooth your creations (provided there is no added pastels) prior to baking. Alternatively, using nail polish remover works wonders on baked clay. (it also eats at it so use with caution) Aaaaand yes, once you start - there is no going back! Happy Claying!

If I may go off-topic, I'd like to ask you to Google the environmental impact of our increased use of baby wipes (& moist towelettes, 'flushable' toilet wipes, wet ones, cleaning wipes, make-up wipes & especially antibacterial wipes) you'll see from the many articles listed, that our increased dependency on thes items is having an enormous impact on how our waste water & landfill treatment systems operate. I'd like to see YT crafters stop using baby wipes in the craft room & encourage their audience to use reusable alternatives instead. Looking forward to your next video. Best wishes.
Joanne Carroll I agree. So good to see someone actually mention this point. There are plenty of alternative choices that are more friendly to the environment and your purse. I use recycled clothes and cut them up into useful sizes. Also want to say that Julie does an amazing job with her tutorials. I have purchased 2 of her books and had lots of fun making dollhouse furniture.
@@elizabethdaglish2027 - Keeping a 'rag bag' is a great idea, esp for old clothes that are too worn or damaged to be donated. Paper towels & tissues are also a better idea than you'd imagine, as they can be composted (depending on what you wiped with them, of course). I wanted to be clear that it's not intended to be a dig at Julie, I mentioned it here specifically because I can see that Julie already reuses & recycles, so maybe it's less likely to fall on deaf ears here than on some other channels.
I work with fimo and I have a “rag bag”. I cut up old cotton clothes that were heading to the clothing recycling bin and I have a clean rag bag, spray bottle and a homemade wet bag at my desk. When crafting I take out a few pieces of clean cloth and spray them so they are damp but not dripping water everywhere. I find I prefer them over wet wipes.
Hi Julie! I just found your wonderful tutorials today. I've been binge watching since this morning lol I have already ordered and received my clay but I didn't know about the chalks. I also ordered some silicone miniature molds. Of course they arrived with no instructions. My question is do I just put the clay into the mold, without dusting it without anything? Am I supposed to leave the clay in these tiny molds and put them in the oven like that?? Do you know how long and what temp in F°? These videos are really so helpful but I have been wondering, what do you put on baking goods to make them look like the fine powdered sugar has been sprinkled on top? I've never heard of that fine rice. Okay one more question lol I'm having trouble understanding the math conversations. Which of your books has the most conversations already done for me? I probably just need to jump in and make mistakes but I'd like to measure twice and cut once, like that old saying goes! 😂

I'm afraid I can't help you with the clay moulds, as I've never used them, but do have a search here on TH-cam and I'm sure you'll find somebody offering instructions. To create the powdered sugar effect on baked goods, you can use corn flour or icing sugar. All of my books include measurements in both mm and inches and they all include a conversion chart, too. I don't use a pasta machine I use lolly sticks i find that works much better, if you wont the clay thin just use 1 lolly stick both sides, but if you wont the clay thick use 2 lolly sticks on top, that does work, cant afford a pasta machine so i find lolly sticks works, try it out it does work,

Cernit is great for making ceramic plates and such like but you can also use baby oil to help soften the clay

Yes, the rice is added to the clay before sculpting the food item and then baked in.
