      I'm going on 47 next month and started again a little over 2 years ago (after stopping in the early 90s). Blast from the past!!! I'm finding as long as you got good legs and balance it's all good! I even rolled my ankle and was skating a week later 😀🤣 Fuck yeah dude!

      @@billandhisboard Nice! Yeah I've been lifting weight for many years now and my legs are my strongest muscles! I got my 1RM on deadlift up to 500 lbs and on my squat I hit 3 reps at 450 lbs., my balance is not bad but I can tell that it is improving every time I get on the board!

    A big part of my come back involved imaging my self skateing when I was not skating . When you can picture yourself doing something it makes a big difference.

      I sometimes do this, when you visualize your self doing a trick your brain cant always tell the difference, so you can actually improve whilst off your board.

      Wow! That's incredible! I cn't believe you dove straight in! I am taking baby steps 😂 But I have never skated in a pool, on a halfpipe, or a skatepark. I skated in my first skate park ever 3 weeks ago. So far I am trying to stay on flatter ground and get comfortable on the board agian. I am trying to "feel" my board and get familiar with where to pop it to make it wove the way I want. I've been practicing scoops.
      I love that there is someone out there 14 years older than me getting it in! You give me hope!! Let's go!!! ⚡

      @@MidlifeSk8r ya. Took a few good sessions to even get comfortable pushing. The drop in was on a small ramp started at about a foot up it and worked up to the top -- maybe 3 ft. Not ready for anything larger. lol. Small ramp will be enough for me for a few weeks or more. What is giving me fits right now is can't consistently do the 180 on the opposite ramp. I'm definitely jealous of how quickly you got those back

    Don't worry about ollies. Just keep doing what you're doing: rolling around. Don't make it about tricks. I'm in Augusta, 56; we had a park in the 70s, we now have a park that looks like yours - with an 11' bowl. I tried getting back into it, but made the mistake of having the 80s mindset of "gotta be rad", fell to the flat from about 6' up in the bowl.
    ...when, as a 12 year old in the 70s, it was about carving around, not about getting to the coping and whatever accomplishment.
    Learning to have fun without the need to constantly push the limit is the hardest thing of all.

    • @MidlifeSk8r
      @MidlifeSk8r  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you so much! This reaffirms what I was thinking. I need to focus on just skating around and having fun! Though I would love to eventually ollie though I have no desire to slide on rails, maybe a low curb, but nothing too big and crazy so that I stay safe. It's just like when I am lifting weight, I do it for health reasons and not for competition so there's no need to get crazy and try and lift as much as I can every time! Thanks for the advice!!!

    I'm 50 and skating vert on weekends. The biggest obstacle for me was (1) weight and (2) knee pain. I had to lose about 30lbs to stop snapping decks and be able to get pop/height. As for knees, gentle cycling about 3 times a week helped get my knees back into shape. Keep it up!

    My 2 cents ..dude that said your front foot is a little too wide is correct. I used to ride tight trucks until a few years ago, switched to loose (as in two threads showing on the kingpin or less). Wish i had loosened them decades ago. Loose allows you to carve instead of having to tic tac, way more fun, and requires less energy. You can also turn much faster at higher speed without tic tacking. If you are getting wheel bite, you need smaller wheels, and or risers/shock pads. Also, don't be afraid to come back in fakie. It gets comfortable with practice, and becomes much easier and nore efficient than a kick turn. You definitely aren't going to regret padding up 👍

    • @MidlifeSk8r
      @MidlifeSk8r  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Awesome, thanks for the tips! I was mostly doing tic tacs because I hadn’t done them in many years and needed the practice, plus it was easier to gain speed that taking my foot off the board and kicking because I am still learning how to balance in the board. There’s a method to my meyhem 😆 I practiced fakies this past week, I’ll upload the videos soon. Thanks again for the tips!

    For ollying, I suggest getting a large piece (6x6' or larger) of burbur (office) carpet or similar and just practicing on that. That's how I learned. Basically a spot where you can jump and feel safe and practice the foot sliding, etc with the board without sinking in (grass) or slipping out (concrete). It's a good way to just feel comfortable on the board and test ideas, weight distribution, without feeling like it's going to slip out, etc. I practiced in my basement on the carpet with clean wheels, so that also works if you can.

    I'm only 23 and skating for 3 years (rode around at 14). You've skated before I was even born. I feel like skateboarding is in my blood till I die now.
    An odd compliment but you were such a great explainer that you left almost no questions for me to ask - other than: do you feel as though skating is in *your* blood now, too?
    You're gonna progress quicker than you think, I reckon. A 180 kickturn on a bank is honestly no small feat! Kickturning as well as you are tells me you just have a feeling for the balance on the board. I try teaching kids near me but they often give up before they can kickturn well.
    Really small manuals might be a logical thing to try next, as they can help when rolling off of a curb. Just try to do a small manual but focus on landing back on all 4 wheels.
    I will offer help with ollies if you want - obviously a big next step. I have a teaching method different to nearly all videos I've seen but it works for nearly everyone I've explained it to.
    I so look forward to whatever you upload next. Watching people progress in skating is so wholesome to me.
    Wish you all the best!

My instinct now days is to stop/catch myself and that's how I will get hurt as opposed to rolling with the fall. Nice man! I'm 48 and I haven't skated since I was 16 or so. No tricks back then, just to get around when I didn't want to bring my bike. I was more of a BMX'r back then. I just bought myself a 9.25 Santa Cruz also to skate with my 14 yr old niece because her skate friend moved out of her neighborhood and she has no one to skate with. I can say this, jumping back on a board is not the same as jumping back on a bike. I'm still learning to balance all over again. I told her how we all used to build our own ramps in our back yards back in the day and her eyes lit up like that was unbelievable. Excited to see her reaction but also sad that kids these days are so separated from outdoor hobbies like this that they view everyday things we did back then as unthinkable.

    I’m 40 and just picked up skating again too after about 25 years. I actually built a cruiser board that has an 80s shape (I always skated popsicle boards but thought it was cool), cruiser board with big soft OJ Super Juice wheels. My goal is to be able to navigate the streets cruising like they did in the Bones Brigade days, just skating rough terrain doing basic tricks for fun. I’m kinda always uneasy about going out by myself and being awkward but I think we get a pass at our age so we can gear up and actually have fun without the elitism and intimidation of only doing the new hardcore tricks or risk being a poser. We can have fun and it is good exercise. Good seeing you doing the same, keep it up, stay safe.

    Wow. The backstory in the 80s reflects my own. I saw kids skating on a trip to Australia in 88 and came home with my own. Within a month all my friends had boards but no one knew about ollies let alone how. So we knelt on our boards and hill bombed everything… then a little in the 2000s when my brother picked it up, I still couldn’t do anything.

Take your time and enjoy yourself - push yourself but within reason and you’ll be fine. If you have any nearby, bowls are a lot of fun to skate, are great exercise, and can be surprisingly low impact if you just want to cruise. Skatepark Lessons is a great channel for tips. DO IT BRO! I'm 45 and just started again about 10 months ago, after a 20+ year break. It has sparked a fire in my life that I didn't realize I was missing. It really is the fountain of youth. I think the most important piece of advice that I have to offer, is spend the money on some nicer knee pads, and learn how to knee slide. 187 Killer Pads Pro knee pads are expensive, but are (in my opinion) the best you can get, and you can buy replacement caps for them for 20 bucks. Also, if your knees are bad and prone to pain and swelling, get some Old Bones Therapy compression knee sleeves. They have been an absolute game changer for me. Also... I wouldn't stress the "ollie". Enjoy flowing up and down the banks, and if you are fortunate enough to have a bowl... start rolling around in the bottom and learning to carve turn.

I would go a size bigger for kids cause they will grow into the board. Love the vid and keep doing your thing!

      @@MidlifeSk8r I was beyond pissed. The DA switched schools mid semester and i didn't find out until he was gone along with my board. School didn't care because skateboarding had such a negative connotation at the time. I am not without blame, had I not been doing tricks in the hallways I could have kept my board.

    This is great. Keep pushing! If I was to say anything about your skating it would be to align your front foot on the bolts a bit more. This will help you to be able to step off of the board to push instead of Tic Tac'ing to gain speed. All in time though. you're doing great. Skate within your limits for sure. We skate to enjoy skating right? Pushing into something uncomfortable and hurting yourself will definitely take away from that. Especially when we first start. Love it and looking forward to see you progress.

    • @MidlifeSk8r
      @MidlifeSk8r  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ahhh gotcha, I will definitely aim to align my feet more with the bolts! I want to be able to push off the way I see the intermediate & advanced skater where it just looks like there leg is swinging from as high as they can lift it! But like you said "all in time". Thank you so much for the tip!!

    Awesome man, my only advice would be to get a bigger deck, maybe a 9.5 or 10.0 deck, it will feel a lot more natural/comfortable on a bigger deck trust me

    • @MidlifeSk8r
      @MidlifeSk8r  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I keep hearing that. I also keep hearing that 8' decks are easier for flip tricks. I've even seen 6'2" dudes with size 12 shoes rockin the 8" decks. I'd like to get a bigger one just to see how it feels,

  • @likespinningpats
    @likespinningpats หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    As other people have said get a bigger board. If you get to the point where you're wanting to do flip tricks you might size back down but that'll be a while. 8.5 and up would be a good place to start. Look at the wheelbase size as well (distance between inner bolt holes) 14.25 is average these days but longer (14.5-14.75) wheelbase will be a bit more stable starting out and getting comfortable. It's hard to find anything longer than that on a standard possible shape. As for a board for your daughter look for something around 8.0 with a 14.0 wheelbase (shorter wheel base if you can find it but 14 will work) give her those trucks that you're riding now and size up yours to match whatever board size you choose. Go to a skate shop, Zumiez is a gamble because there may or may not be somebody who knows what they're talking about. I did some searching in your area and it looks like Duncan Creek skate shop is a solid shop and not too far from you. Make a trip with your daughter and they will set you both up with what you need. Happy shredding!

    When I graduated high school I thought we were supposed to grow up, quit skating and get a wife and job and bills. I quit for 13 years and then one Xmas my wife got me a wallmart board. When I asked why she stated “every time someone brings a skateboard over you ride it better than them”. I rode almost ten feet hit a pebble and flat spotted a wheel. By days end a truck was bent. I replaced the broken pieces and slowly destroyed the deck. When friends started going snowboarding they had me coach them and supervise a halfpipe construction. They went boarding a couple years and then decided their revenge was to put me on a snowboard. Air the pipe on my second day and through the mogals like a ballroom dancer on my first day and my boys wanted no more. Lol surf, skate, skim, knee, bogie, longboard, 8 wheeler, scooter…. I even ride cardboard, food treys, milk crates, soaps …. What’s that thing where you stand on two horses? I don’t do that.
    I learned to Ollie by watching Natas Copas in slow motion (he uses the top of his foot. Turns his foot upside down pushing down on the deck bottom of his shoe pointing up. Hook the board and fling or pull the board up) over and over. Every day and going to a pull up bar. I grab the bar overhead….ollie….if you fail your arms catch you…..succeed and you land it and you are holding a bar overhead. Maybe rig up a chingas….parallel bars work as well. I don’t do no kick flips or shove it but going across town I might pop up a curb crossing a street.
    Most people say it’s 2024 (it’s been 2024 years since Julious Cesar became king) but I say it’s the year 40 A.U. (After Urethane). In 1973 the first urethane skateboard wheels were made and I quit being a surfer (although I didn’t quit) and became a Skater. Everything changed instantly and then we changed everything. The Z boys were the guys in the magazines but everyone skated. We all rode banks, ditches and pools and pipes. Get your family out there like you said….motivation plus you’re not ditching on fam to ride. Baby steps! We taught bike skills by doing formations riding. The entire family out for the afternoon bike ride and someone shouts “diamond” or chevron or…..and the group forms a diamond….you know, around mom….she’s just riding straight. Lol kids love it, mom loves it and we can always get drunk and beat the kids another day….if were not sk8’n

    Go for it BRO! I am also looking to start skating again after (like you) over 2 decades! TIp: when cruising around, place your front foot on your deck behind your front mounting hardware bolts or on them but definitely not in front of them. It'll help you from tipping forward and you'll have better balance. It's better for doing your 180's on the ramps also. :D Keep going! Also one thing, I could be completely wrong on this, but it seems to me your board might not be sized correctly for you? Maybe its your stance that is throwing me off as I mentioned your front foot placement earlier.

      Thanks for the tip!! Yeah my board is only an 8" but I like it and I don't have the cash to go out and get another one so I'm just going to continue on this one until it breaks lol I hear so many different opinions on deck size and my conclusion is that it is subjective, just whatever size you like run with it. Having said that, I'm sure I'd like an 8.5 much better lol

    Wider board, wider trucks, dragon wheels if you're ever gonna skate outside a skatepark. Learn how to fall correctly by absorbing impact n rolling out, and don't forget to stretch, there's nothing worse than not being able to skate when you really want to because you pulled something.
