The dry areas used to be all sugar cane fields back to the late 1800s. The sugar cane plantations had huge bulldozers and knew how to contain fires (they intentionally burn fields to harvest them so they knew their stuff). But that industry all died out about ten years ago so nothing of that remains, hence the fires not only fed off the dead foliage of the former pristine green cane fields, but they also had no bulk fire control equipment or people to do it.
i don’t doubt any of that, but there’s also just the fact that there was both a very bad/long drought and crazy winds from a distant hurricane, things made worse by climate change 😢
VERY very sad to see what happened there on Maui (and LaHaina area). Hopefully and prayerfully,, things can still be REbuilt in those disaster areas. Anyway,, it's NOT just on the island of Maui,, but the the far Southwest and Western ends of ALL the Hawaiian islands (Leeward sides,, where lately it's been extra dry,,,, PLUS high ferocious winds) are ALL very much vulnerable,, to fire disasters such as this,, happening. Besides Maui , I'm talking about the Big Island,,, Molokai,, Oahu,,, and of course,, Kauai !!!! These areas really need to water Water WATER and do ALL humanly possible to prevent a "Maui type" fire tragedy,, happening in THOSE communities,, also!!!!!
Looks like arson... Mauro Farinelli, of Lahaina, said the winds had started blowing hard on Tuesday, and then somehow a fire had started up on a hillside.
There's only one place that can avoid fire: underwater. All men should live underwater in the future to avoid not just fire but hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes, and yes, even arsonists.
Think deep cave systems would probably work better. There are plenty of ancient underground city caves systems that would be a good start and expand from there
Theoretically, the idea sounds genius. However it all amounts to safety of the firemen & fire volunteers first. They have to look out for everyone, including themselves. The fire planes/helicopters have to get within feet of whatever water source they use; imagine if a rogue wave took them out while trying to suck water from the ocean. Just sayin'
No time... besides salt water its a ways from the beach to most structures... youd need hundreds of pumps and milies of hose. Just isnt feasible, hence your communities fire hydrants

Send cruise ships there so that residents have a place to eat, sleep and clean up

Wasn’t Maui a tropical island at one point?
This is the leeward side (West side) and its a desert. The other side of island is tropical.
Yeah when you land at the Maui airport you will see that’s half desert and then half tropical
North tropical
South desert

Hot, dry, arid.
There is a giant ocean next to them, couldn’t they just get pumps and start pumping water??

Salt water doesn’t 100% stop fires. Hell part of what stops fires is the pressure in which fresh water is shot at…
Yea but the wind and fire are quicker than that
