I wanted desperately to see a grey Grand National winner, and I was starting to think there was a jinx on greys in the race. Neptune Collonges was always my favourite, and I'm so glad he was the one. John Hales is my favourite owner too. I've done video tributes to both on my channel.
Memories of my dad absolutely screaming his lungs out out the tell in front my mum on her birthday and won 200-odd quid! Also, it was on the day where 100 years ago the Titanic hit the iceberg. We only went for it because of that and I was learning French at the time, a perfect match!
@@Eleventhearlofmars You still are supposed to buy a license if you watch the BBC even on catchup. Be careful as I had lots of bullying from them for not having a license. "The Right To Enter My Home" bullies on the doorstep. They can't believe someone could exist without TV. I have never bought a license in my life and I'm 56 - there are better things to do.
Paul Nicholls reaction at the end told it's own story. All those big races: Gold Cups, King George's and World Hurdle's. All those great horses, Kauto Star, Denman, Big Bucks. There is only one Grand National!
Yep, lovely Neptune collonges, I didn’t win as much as you but I had £5 ew on him, at the time I didn’t think he’d got up, it felt like an eternity for the result to be announced, I thought it was going to be a dead heat which would of halved the winnings. I thought he was the class horse in the race tbh and could see after the first circuit that he was enjoying the course and race conditions.
Fantastic race, and yes, very sad too. The very first horse race I ever watched was Nicholas Silver in 1961. I still remember the exciting call what a great sport we have in spite PETA.
This will be back on the BBC soon after Channel 4's multi million pound deal ends, BBC won't get them all but hopefully the Grand National and Royal Ascot.
Head of sport at BBC has horse racing at the very bottom of his priorities. Cricket came back after 20 years so who knows but I can't see NH returning any time soon.
Yes sad in a way that BBC lost the rights but to be fair it was not such a great spectacle as it was anyway. Look at the GNs from 70s and 80s then compare this one. Yes I know the commentators retired but the camera angles used back then were much better. The head on shot of the runners going over Bechers was a magnificent sight. Side on angles ruined it for me.
why do people keep saying the national belongs on the bbc, their coverage of the race towards the end was awful, they stopped supporting racing so good riddance to them
2012 was the last edition that deserved to be called The Grand National. By 2013 it was no longer a test of jumping, no longer a continuation of the history of the event. (The fences has been getting easier for years, but this was the end of jumping ability being an advantage.) A horse being able to jump like Hello Bud would never be relevant again.
Changes had been made to the landing side at Becher's before the 2012 running which killed it off as it was still a test even after the 1990 modifications. Then in 2013 it became the 'Plastic Grand National' when they replaced the core with plastic birch and moved the start 90 yards closer to the first fence. F/UR/BD are rare in the race now so going forwards i can't see the point in having the traditional re-run. Everyone loved the re-run to see the spectacular leaps and falls.
...travelling camera over the first four fences...then head-on towards Bechers....head-on Canal Turn...back to the travelling camera again for the next four fences...switch to Grandstand camera from the 13th to the water jump..and start again.....watch it now and weep...
they had the side angle at bechers between 71 and 77 they get rid of it then bring it back 30 odd years later, in 71 beau bob is clear at bechers jumps it and unseats his rider but you cant see it because they switch to the side angle , fancy camera angles are for the re run not the actual race
75 was the last time it was used, if u look at the bbc camera angles around 2008 they lowered the head on bechers shot to a much inferior lower shot, why do it, anybody can tell which is the better shot, in the 2012 race there are no head on shots at bechers and at fence 12, when u have that you can follow the race better, see how spread out the field is etc, the side angle shot at bechers the camera zooms in and then moves to the left absolutely dreadful, they were makin it difficult to follow the race properly
I agree with you. My mom's best friend used to be a professional jockey and was a part of a group that owned a mare who had a lot of talent when it came to jumping. So the group had ideas about letting that mare run in hurdle races, but my mom's friend said no to that. She said that a flat race is risky for both horse and rider enough and in her opinion there's no sense in adding another potential for fatal injuries.
He was brought down, he did not fall. As for Synchronised he fell at Bechers but broke his leg later as a loose horse. Talk about deja vu: in 1979 Alverton ridden by Jonjo fell also at Bechers and was killed, he had won the Gold Cup three weeks earlier.
When the Grand National comes i always hope for a rainy day or soft ground. I think to myself at least the horses will be safe. Horses die usually on sunny days and hard ground. If we have a sunny day this year, it is a good chance a horse will die. We have had good/soft for 4 years but i dread a sunny day tho. I want them to live. I hope for soft ground again this year :)
Duncan Jackson It's a bit like Sky's coverage of the Formula One, yes it's leaps ahead technically to what the BBC provide but lacking in the heart and charm. When the National was on the Beeb it felt like it was event television because it was one of the few horse racing events the channel had. With Channel 4 it feels like just another horse race.
The BBC made every effort for a time slot a replay of The grand national later that night. Channel 4 is the only channel that broadcasts horse racing now. Cheltenham was on RTE but was blocked out no matter channel 4 were showing The Cheltenham festival anyway.
The BBC lost a lot of sport in the early/mid 2010s. They lost half the Formula 1 season, then all the F1, the Open, half the Masters, Moto GP, even half the Olympics.
I think Bryony Frost will be the first female winner of the national very soon. She’s already a fantastic jockey and horses really seem to click with her riding. A recent example would be Frodon.
Many clouds in the sky yep, they’re both excellent, I’ve had some good winners with both, Bryony rode milansbar to win for me at a big price at Warwick and frodon a few times.
I also had 1 pound on him that day at 40/1 lol i never put a lot on back then I tend to bet up to 100 pounds on the national these day :) I always wanted a grey to win :)
The last grand national broadcast by the BBC no thanks to Barbara Slater who was and still in charge of sports rights, She has given up more sports rights than you can shake a stick at totally useless at her job. She is retiring this year so hopefully the BBC will employ someone who actually likes sports.
so strictly caused grandstand to go then the money going to celebs for a glitterball caused end of racing terrible waste by the bbc. strictly should be axed and grandstand brought back with money freed up used for the racing allow bbc to get back to its best
You make it sound as though it's a bad thing that the fences have been modified, no horses have died in the last two years where every year previous at least one horse has. This 'true nationals' is one of pure animal cruelty purely for the entertainment of the likes of yourself.
There were spells of years where no horses were killed. 1992 - 1996 for example. I wonder if people would say the same about Cheltenham. Horses continue to die there, would they modify the fences? No, because that's for real racing people and they wouldn't have it. They know that jump racing is great BECAUSE it's dangerous. Unfortunately, the Grand National was such a national occasion that people who had no interest in racing got a say in it. Typical of idiots like you who really know nothing of horses and people in racing. And now The Grand National no longer exists.
Where do you get your information. There hasn't been 1 death every year previous. In fact in the whole of the 1970s and 80s there were 12 fatalities. Whereas from 1990 to 2010 there were 17. It is a bad thing that modifications have been made to the fences because now that the fences are lower horses are coming into the fences at a much faster speed then they previously were making it more dangerous. If you check the number of horses who fell at fences from the year 2000 -2017 and compare it to the number of horses who fell from 1970 -1987. Only fractionally more horses fell in that time period so the modifications have not made a real impact in terms of the number of fallers but now the horses are approaching the fences much quicker and so subsequently if they do fall it is much more likely to be fatal.
A fitting finish to the BBCs 52 years of coverage of the greatest sporting spectacle on earth.
Shakalakaboomboom is without a doubt the best name to give to a race horse ever
And the one named after the limited menu choice the owner once found at a restaurant: "beef or salmon".
It´s lovelly when the commentator describes the replay with as much emotion as if he was commentating on live action.

The fact that you can now jump Bechers on the inside rail, tells you how much easier the course has become.

Does anyone have this race in proper HD anywhere.?
The last true National
.....yep......10 years of phoney nationals......
thank you daryl jacob, what a brilliant ride. i had £2 @40-1. cheers daryl
