He´s talking about she wanting to kill herself, to join her family as tradition demands, like they talked about in like 4 previous episodes... Come on guys: Pay more attention. Be smarter. Be better at what you do (which is watching TV... And you´re not very good at it. You ALWAYS miss SO MUCH stuff :S).

I love how they, without us really noticing, used the translator position to highlight subtly that Mariko has her own agenda to gently address and push without being caught.
When John and Toranaga-Sama first meet, they drop out the Jesuit priest's translations after a few lines. Because he is translating as accurately as he can. Mariko, however, they include every translation. Because she often "adjusts" or "filters" what she passes on.
The subtle distinction between translating and interpreting...
@scotthewitt258 - They have been doing this since episode 1. Since the first scene she translated anything, until now... She hasn´t translated what John said, practically NOT EVEN ONCE, literally since her first appearance.. But I don´t know why you say "without us really noticing..." Ive been talking about this fact with people online, since the premiere of the show xDxD
mariko's translating what she wants to the courtesan was funny
John was actually animated in expressing how…ahem…escorts back in his homeland was not as well dressed or quick witted as Kiku-dono. And she says “he preffers his homeland” which is NOT what he said. 😆😆😅

Also, could be a passive-aggressive jelousy subplot; which only she knows of and understands of the three, but though the other two dont know the language of the other, they should know what she said was too short to be an actual and accurate translation. 😆😆😆

I love also how effectively and compactly they convey so many motivations and hidden agendas for both Mariko and Ochiba. Easily got us up to speed with flashbacks that all happen within one episode, and do not dominate the episode. You get all the backstory of how two childhood friends ended up opposed through the flashbacks, and one short play.
1. All hail Ochiba-sama!
2. The running gag of Yabushige having to write his will. AGAIN.
3. Fuji-sama, drinking her tea; trying to act oblivious to what Gin, Kiku’s handler, is trying to insinuate between Mariko and Blackthorne.
Gin was literally AND figuratively serving the hot tea!

Holy, what an episode!! Keeps getting better and better!
I really like Mariko and in this episode she got even more character development and we got to know more about her as a character and as a person she is constantly in conflict with her desires, beliefs and duty. As we see in her past that she was very happy when she was with her father but it is really sad to know that she wants to die because of what had happened to her past and I really like the bond that her and lady Ochiba share they seem to be really close but as the year pass they became apart and I am really excited to know what is going to happen next. And that specific seen that lady Ochiba goes to the emperor to just gave him an heir knowing well the emperor has a wife but he wants an heir for the throne so they will get any woman to be the concert for to him to give a son to be the heir that shocked and disguised me but this episode perfectly shows the suffering and hardships that women go through at that time in Japan and I really like this fact that the show doesn't shy away to show the brutality and the most disgusting thing that at the time Japanese people used to do. In that Kiku scene, Mariko and Blackthorn have so much tension and chemistry but to their circumstances and rules that they cannot express the feelings that they have for each other.

The scene of Ochiba's ritual to become consort reminded me of Paul's gom jabbar trial in Dune 2021.

Ochiba is no joke, I love her!
The first few minutes revealed that Mariko was unaware of his father’s plans and held contempt for Hidekatsu Toda-sama even then, and i didnt know this until this episode, she views him as below his station as evidenced by her comment in the flashback about how her father is discarding him; also telling Ruri-hime (Ochiba sama) what a joke and worth less alliance it was to marry her off to the Toda family;and also by his comment to Toranaga about how his father should have married her better.
And so, when Toranaga revealed truth bombs to her, clearing up her misunderstanding, i was literally shouting at the screan “YES! THANK YOU!” So much so that the next door neighbour knocked on my door to check if i was OK. Lol😅😅😅
Also, though her words were subtitled “i have failed my father”, it could have also been translated as “I have betrayed my father’s trust”
And it puts Hidekatsu Toda-sama in a more sympathetic light, though of course, we still disapprove of the Domestic violence.
Toranaga claims he desire no power... but knowing Tokugawa Ieyasu (his historical model) I sincerely doubt that 😅😅😅
Also how Toranaga (Tokugawa) is depicted as a good guy here trying to protect the heir while Ishido (Ishida) was depicted as a Villain. 😂 In fact Ishido (Ishida in real history) was the one trying to protect the heir and preserve the Toyotomi leadership.
I fully believe he’s lying and he wants to be shogun. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was revealed at the end that Toranaga was the threat to the heir all along.
Yeah I would not be surprised if Ochiba was right and Toranaga really was the one who was behind "not" Nobunaga's murder. He's already shown to be an expert at manipulating people, so it's easy to see him subtlety nudging Mariko's father to kill Nobunaga.
He stoops to conquer. Humble in victory.
It would also relate to the 3 hearts saying too. Toranaga's 3rd heart is kept hidden from everyone. He constantly speaking his 1st heart out loud that he desire no power and don't want to be a shogun. His 2nd heart is revealed to his friend that he make plan crimson sky to rebel 'only if nescessary' to fight Ishido. And that he has no choice but to become the shogun if he want to survive. But his 3rd heart and his real intention is power.
Shōgun just keeps raising the bar with each new episode. I appreciate this release format because I honestly think this is the best way to view incredible television, but I hate the idea of having to wait a week for the next episode. That ending has me ready to dive into the 3rd act of this incredible show. Yet another phenomenal episode! 👏🏽

II think andrew assumes buntaro always hated mariko from the beginning. it doesnt seem like that was the case.
He's never hated her. This episode made it clear he's hugely frustrated by her because she's always been so cold toward him. That doesn't excuse how he's treated her.

I've not read the books, only seen and loved the first Shogun TV series with Richard Chamberland in the 80's. But my prediction is the Taikō couldn't provide any heirs and the Taikō's first wife made Ochiba lay with others to produce an heir for Taikō. All of this may have been part of Toronaga's plan?

It's funny how until this episode, I'd only seen schoolgirls in anime doing the ei ei oo cheer before taking up a task (or playing sports), or maybe just idol girl groups doing their thing getting fired up, but here we have a graying military leader doing it which hits different.

With 3 episodes left to go in this series I feel reminded of the fact that me having not read the book this is based on makes the experience so much better. Although I can only imagine for the book readers that seeing it envisioned the way it is is almost better at points. Idk what’s about to happen in the next few weeks but I am prepared to witness something great!🙏🏻

Worse part is, and i didnt know this also until this episode, Mariko viewed him in contempt even before the marriage; thought his marriage to him was his father discarding her; telling Ruri-hime (Ochiba no kata) that the marriage alliance with the Toda clan was a joke and useless; and, after all these years, still telling Toranaga-sama that his father should have married her better. 😢😢😢

But also, it is still depicted in a way where you still cant really hate Mariko-sama. But things have definitely been reframed.
I don't think the heir is his
I feel like Blackthorn did end up having a fulfilling night with Kiku. The stage was set by Kiku and Mariko played along. The gesture of him looking at Mariko and touch her hand said to me that he realized that they had to move on despite their star-crossed love.
The book goes into more detail and basically what happened was that Kiku darkened the room just enough and then basically dressed up as Mariko so that John could imagine he was sleeping with Mariko instead of Kiku.
So no. John did not move on from Mariko XD.
@@Birthday888 I read the book, but it was so long ago I remember little of it. Strange, since I also read Tai Pan right after and remember several scenes from that.
I never expect book adaptations to be faithful. I only hope that they live up to the quality of the original work rather than a poor facsimile. Your comment makes me wonder if there was another scene expressing those moments with Kiku which was left on the cutting room floor.
The subsequent episodes, shows that while Blackthorne does still harbor feelings, he isn't going to overstep his bounds. Quite different from the book. I prefer this version of the story to the book. The book was great for it's time, but it was written for the western market. This adaptation is written in a manner for contemporary markets with a bent on being more historical in its settings and behavior. I prefer this version of Mariko.

Someone converted the currency in the Tea House negotiations in another reaction.
I think there is around 70-80 of the smaller currency they are saying in a koku. One koku represented the value of enough rice to feed one adult for a year. So, several koku and change is what they settled on.
So who's son is the heir?

Is it just me or Lady Mariko and Ochiba’s relationship reminds me of Rhenera and Alicent
The husband was not cold at first. He's saying she's always been cold and he just matched it. Obviously he shows it in a more extreme way, but I feel for him too. They wouldn't make him a good guy anyway because Mariko would turn into the bad while the show tried to push the blackthorn relationship on us.
FX has a BTS clip explaining the use of real swords. I didn't watch too much cuz I didn't want to be spoiled with upcoming scenes. So just take note..... Those aren't mostly just plastic fighting sequences.
So Toranaga 100% knows, Or did once he saw her reaction to "you will go with him." But does Kiku know? Did she just read the body language and figure it out. Cause that scene was entire too erotic for everyone to be dressed.
Kiku, being a highly trained Yuujou, and based on the words she says after observing her guests, 100% knows. Not to mention she might even be instructed by…ehem…someone to observe how the two would act in that supposedly private space where they can escape from prying eyes.
Why else would she sit beside Mariko while explaining the willow world to Blackthorne, which obscures his vision of her and all he can see is Mariko?

Can't believe ppl still think Toranaga is the 'good guy' in this story when all actions indicate the opposite if you stop adopting his perspective. In the meantime the supposed 'threat' to the heir, Ishido, is just a feckless bumpkin who couldn't pull off a party prank if he tried, and could literally just kill the heir right then and there since they're literally *living in the same castle*.
