I got a Coleman Sundome 4 person tent some time around 2005. One time I went camping with it near a lake and there were severe thunderstorms in the weather forecast. The forecast was accurate. This tent was my only shelter against high winds, heavy wind-driven rain, thunder and lightning. If I were to guess, I'd say the wind was around 40-45 mph with gusts even higher at times. I was inside with the tent poles moving back and forth in the wind and the very loud, continuous sound of rain pounding against the fly and sides of the tent. I was pretty nervous that the tent would fail at any moment, but it stood strong and not a single drop of that wild rain got inside. I still have and use that tent now. I would not hesitate to recommend the Coleman Sundome tents to anyone looking for a very good value and some peace of mind when sleeping outdoors, miles from home.
Thank you for this review. I’m currently sleeping in this exact tent that’s sleeps 6. It is raining very hard currently 3am. My man is sleeping cozy next to me while I’m freaking out if this is going to leak. We have all our stuff in here including my suitcase, purse etc…. I got very nervous, but it is dry in here. Now with this video I realize I can hop back in bed & relax knowing it will not leak. I got this bed for $80 at BJS FYI.
This was great! My mom got me a Sundome in maybe 1995, and I've been using it ever since, but lately it's really showing its age. I will almost certainly get another one after seeing this. Glad to know they're still getting it right.
This was a great review of a really good tent. I've owned 2 Sundomes in the last 7 years and the review is very accurate. This review should do a great thing , help new campers connect with a great tent at a great price and get out there to a campground for some fun.
Went camping in the rain in the mountains 2 days ago with this exact tent and can confirm - bone dry! Definitely worth the price and perfect for car camping. Four trips now and no complaints :)
This video is the only one that set up the tent completely. I wanted to see how the door mat was placed. I couldn't find any info on the door mat in the Coleman instruction. This person was the most knowledgeable on the tent. Most of the other videos the people, or person, was winging it for the first time.
this review sealed the deal and I went with this! I had my first camping experience in a rain storm and our tent flooded haha. I looked up waterproof tents that night and it lead me here!
Same I want for the homless to fit their stuff n not worry if wind rain most didn't seem to last wen I reaserached so I looked up rain proof here I am thxs so much
Thanks. Older gal here practicing putting up this tent for a music festival I’m attending soon. Don’t want to look too lame. Watched video for a quick inspire. It was easy peasy!
This was a great video. Thank you for making. I was on the fence about buying this, but now I'm gonna do it thanks to what you showed us. Really appreciated.
The Coleman 6 person tent is a classic tent with a new twist. You know you trust Coleman tents as they have always delivered very good tents over the decades they have made them. My first tent was a Coleman 2 person A frame with air vents on each side.used the tent for 10years through out the 1970s and 80s .always worked very well. 2 weeks ago I bought the Coleman 6 person sun dome tent, can't wait to try it out.
Ccould you please tell me if you have a problem with the rain dome? I don't success to create a space between the external part and the internal part, near the top of the tent. And this contact creates leaks...😢
Thank you for posting this , i bought a Colman for my upcoming motorcycle camping trip and wasn't shur i made a good purchase , you just made me feel better about it , thank you ..
Great video! All the info was well stated and it is good to see a real life test of this tent. My only decision now is whether to go for the 3 or 4 person tent for my 11 & 8 year old sons and myself. Thanks!
Having a tough time deciding between the Sundome, Skydome, and Flatwoods II. All seem to be so similar! I like the operable window on the back of the Sundome. The other 2 don’t have that.
Thank you so much for this review. From the Caribbean and was really searching for reviews of this tent especially for rainy weather. Great presentation!!
We have this tent; the space inside, ability to actually stand up and have enough room to move and store essentials is EXCELLENT. The ventilation is also excellent; It does have what I CONSIDER a BAD flaw; The -- RAIN FLY ---- it is water proof, works just like she is showing in the down poor BUT-- The BAD design of the Rain fly --NOT EXTENDING MUCH further DOWN THE SIDES-- it IS IMPERATIVE in RAIN-- that the rain water SHED down and OUT FURTHER --- from the TENT! We have camped MANY times in the rain and rain has come in the FRONT window-- a DIRECT result of the FRONT AND BACK of the rain fly -- NOT extending FAR ENOUGH. The WATER that she does NOT SHOW-- from the heavy rain that goes OFF THE RAIN FLY-- DOES AND WILL go VERY close AND UNDER your tent-- yes, you should have a TARP under your tent, BUT -- if the Rain Fly-- extended ALMOST to the bottom of the side of the tent--- as it DOES in BETTER tents --- you WILL see the water STAY further away FROM your tent NOT CONTINUALLY HIT the PRIMARY SIDES of your tent -- then go UNDER your tent! This ALL causes a damp feeling after a while! A GOOD Rain Fly will ACT like a SHELL OVER your primary parts of your tent -- this ALSO acts as a DOUBLE WALL-- that is THAT much MORE protection from rain AND COLD! I can NOT emphasize enough the IMPORTANCE of the Rain Fly going down much further on the SIDES! WATER WILL SEEP under your tent AND your TARP! Also-- to make this tent better-- they SHOULD have ADDED a VESTIBULE like EXTENSION - on the FRONT of the tent-- that could be staked down EVEN as you stake the corners down-- then you could KEEP boots and other item OUTSIDE -yet under the vestibule! LASTLY--- it NEEDS (really!!!) ALUMINUM POLES -- NOT fiberglass-- as they WILL SPLIT! MAKING THE sides of the rain fly LONGER down the sides, more material to make a vestibule type cover to keep boots and more safely outside your tent and-- extend the rain fly 2 or 3 more inches on the FRONT and BACK--- this would also mean a LITTLE longer rain fly pole( from ALUMINUM-- not fiber glass) would make this THEE tent to have for camping, it would be fantastic! This tent has a LOT of potential! It has room, easy to put up, great ventilation, light weight, GREAT water proofing ( except for the SERIOUS rain fly issue)! Coleman could up the price , for the upgrade in items and design I mentioned and people would understand and pay for what would be EASY CHANGES!
Great comment! I have two great tents that have rain flies that go lower and out. The Tofino 4 and the Hornby 6. Took the Hornby 6 to Hornby Island last summer. Monsoon rains. That tent held up beautifully. Only problem is it is windowless. But does have a nice big vestibule where we actually use a full standing coat rack, shelves and a tall porta potty for middle of the night urgencies. LOVE this tent. Hope they make one with windows at some point. Writing you from the "Wet Coast" of Canada. You are very right. Dome tents are best here.
Exactly what we think of this tent every time it rains... it is perfect if you don't have to go outside! The door is bad shaped too, too high... so it is a bit too high for me to open, but worse, when door is opened, water slides from the top and can enter deeply in the tent. Do you have a tip for the rain dome? I can't fix it correctly, there is still contact between rain dome and internal tent near the top, so there are leaks...😢
Hi! Very informative! I was wondering if you can help in providing the pole length of the rainfly? I lost that pole unfortunately, and i’ve been trying to get the exact info of the pole length.
Have one with the screen room!! I adore it!! Coleman makes a solid tent, esp for price. It's a tank. Had one up all winter, under a tarp due to the Artic weather in Wesminster MA.. So much darker and cooler too!! The darkroom tech I mean.
Nice review Samantha. I was surprised at the tent's effectiveness of shedding water and staying dry--absolutely impressed. The price point puts this high on my list for the occasional car camper that wants a functional tent. I get your point (-1 for the awning design), but for the price, don't you need to add a +1 to make it a 5/5? Well, maybe the crow rating scale doesn't work that way... anyway, take care.
Fantastic review, you sold me. Your flow of information was awesome. Getting ready to take my not so outdoorsy wife on a two week or month long trip bass fishing trip to Kissimmee, Florida or somewhere in Texas during Feb - Mar timeframe. Hope we are still married after the trip.😂😂😂😂
Just ordered this for a 5 day music festival (blue ridge rock fest) in Virginia. Wish me luck! Lol last year I had a really cheap tent from Dunham Sports (4 person eagles camp) and it did great but it never rained 😂 I’m not risking it this year.
What was the temperature outside? Was there enough cross breeze/ air flow with the rain guard on? Was it hot in there? We are considering this tent for a trip coming up. This is the best review of this tent in my opinion. Thank you for making this video!
It was in high 70s, low 80s. You do want to try to angle the door towards a breeze, but the tent vents fairly well. It can get hot though when there is no air movement, just due to limited mesh on the inside of this tent.
good tent.to have.also have the cabin tent by Coleman. both great tents.fit the people your gear.it all.even a small table.i do use tarps instead of rain Flys. mainly work better for where I live.HAPPY CAMPING ONE AND ALL😊
My husband and I are looking for an affordable dome tent that we can use for beach camping at cape lookout NC. We wanted a large tent since we also have 2 dogs and a queen size inflatable mattress. What do you recommend. Trying to keep this under $300
I am planning on purchasing this 4p tent. Do you recommend any seam sealing or fabric waterproofing to add extra protection and if so where would you seal and protect? Thanks and I love your down-to-earth and informative videos on mainstream camping equipment.
Is the “dark room” Sundome better or worst material? Is that material more Water resistant? Sun dome gets better reviews than sun dome dark room so trying to figure out why? Also thoughts on sundome vs Skydome
The big difference between the sun dome and the skydome is the shape of the rainfly. From a water shedding perspective there is little difference. The dark room and the regular sundome are made of the same material, just different colors. The dark room is VERY dark during the day so it's great if you like to sleep in or if you have to put kids to bed early.
I saw your review of the pop- up by Coleman and your problem with the zipper ripping. That honest observation made me walk away from the pop-up and on to this Dome tent. Very pleased. Can you describe an extra, maybe canapy - type covering that I can stake in, over my tent and my cot-tent, 🔥 together under one roof? Is there such a thing? M. Illinois ⛺
The problem with canopies is that they perform very poorly even in light winds. I'd recommend a good bushcraft tarp and use of two trekking poles at the front of your cot tent. Here is a link for a decent budget friendly bushcraft tarp. amzn.to/2VE0mmB they also make a telescoping pole set for this tarp as well in case you are interested. amzn.to/3jurnkB
Thanks for your awesome review! I'm buying this bec of you! I just wish they had this color in the Coleman PH website. They only have green, light blue, and red.
Good price but how isit a backpacking tent or a camping tent its not lightweight and compact and you cant stand up in it please review the coleman octagon its soo cheap and its a stand up tent ..also i love the kobuk valley 4+ tent but it has no purpuse
What do you recommend for a 4-8 instant/ pop up tent for Florida camping? We almost went with a gazelle t4 plus but still pricey .. Unless really recommended by you if not what are my best options. We are disabled veteran with severe arthritis so would like something easy to set up
I'd go with the Instant Cabin Tent by Coleman, the 6p only. I wouldn't get bigger than that personally. I own this tent and love it. If you want you can buy and extra rain tarp but I didn't and it works fine for me in rain. amzn.to/3MWosxO
This is a pretty solid tent as long as it's not windy on the mountain. If you expect wind I'd go with the XT because the rsinfly comes all the way down to the ground and is less likely to be taken in wind. I don't know that the XT is still in stock though. 🤔
I have 3 Colman tents one 8 man cabin tent one 2 man sundome and one 6 man tent. I got both sundoms on Amazon used I picked used because they goto Colman USA for any repairs and replacing missing parks they bring it up to standards. You see most of Colman products are nit made in China and i think is not up to Colman's standards we expect but used tents sold by Colman on Amazon are much better then the new tents because of the refitting at Colman USA after the tent is fixed up they even put it in a new box then they send it to Amazon storage for resell. I have has no problems only thing I has to replace the stakes because I live in Florida and the ground is sandy so i need steaks that can hold up. As for high winds if stake down well and tight no problems have had it in 50+ mph wind gusts (note I use extra parachute chord and vary strong stakes to tie it down in bad weather) in vary heavy thunderstorms no water in side and tent has no rips love my tents. But the best thing about buying a used Colman on Amazon is its cheaper I saved $30 dollars over a new tent.
Great review on both the sun dome and cabin tents im thinking now which one to get the cabin design but also the simplicity of a dome tent. Just upgrading from my Coleman canvas cabin tent fro. The 80s. I seasoned it yearly but showing wear now.. Your feedback would be excellent to hear.. 62 n still camping solo.. but want space in the tent im thinking 6man either way..
The Luxe Hercules is a solid option, gives nice headroom. I recently purchased a canvas bell tent as well which is a good option as well. This is the one I bought! amzn.to/3ifPOST
I did a review of the Coleman 10p cabin Darkroom tent. I wasn't wild about the design of that tent but the video features how well the Darkroom technology works. It gets very dark inside! Here is the link to that video if you are interested th-cam.com/video/pihoZmXNfJc/w-d-xo.html
One of the bad things about this tent is that the awning cannot be collapsed. You could take out the support pole but then it would hang in the doorway. I'm not sure how it handles snow. I'd be worried about ventilation in this tent in cold temps though. Ventilation is fine in summer and fall but in winter I'd be concerned.
@@LoneCrowAdventures yeah for a few times I go in snow..those base camp snowsport tent probably like 400!!!...fall trips can get a few inches too. I have a Coleman 8 insta, but it's only me now...too big.
@@CursedTammyTFs I replaced it with another Coleman..I do like Coleman products and at this point,I’m pretty much gonna keep buying from them.the first Coleman tent I bought I had for 10 yrs,and we used a lot!! The second one lasted two trips..hopefully this one last’s like the first one did.
I dubble down on my lines and use parachute cord and upgraded tent stakes they go deeper and are larger if I am expecting vary heavy winds I take two stakes cross them foring an x and tie the parachute cord to it and bury in a hole 3 ft deep works good but a pain to dig out after it rains lol
Thoughts on Colemans dark room technology? Does it actually keep the tent cooler during the day? Looking at buying a Sundome but wasn't sure if I wanted the darkroom one or just one like this one!
Yes, the Darkroom technology works extremely well. I did a review of the Darkroom 10p cabin tent and the Darkroom feature works fantastic! I wasn't wild about the rainfly design on the 10p and that tent had some issues with stability, but the Darkroom technology works fabulous! Hood luck!
Not bad . . . much better than that pop up 4-toddler tent! I appreciate the cord opening and ground vent. But wish they'd put two of those ground vents on it instead of one. Not bad at all. Nice review!
They need to stop pushing so many Chinese made goods and bring the manufacturing process back to the USA. Just look at the shipping crisis, the breakdown in supply chain and availability of goods since c19 and associated shortages. There is no reason this tent cannot be manufactured here in the USA. Charge me like $20 more or even $30 more for a domestically produced product. @colemanusa
Yes, the sundome has a triangular peaked roof. The skydome has an arching angled roof (flatter on the top) which gives this tent slightly more headroom inside the tent. Hope that helps.
I bought it today and used 1st time in rain, and it's leaking everywhere at stich edges, please advise can I replace it? Or all tents are same, please help by advising

Oh I agree! Great tent!
Best review of this tent so far! Doesn't get any more real world that that rain and wind.
Yeah, that was pretty intense!
Love this !!! I got this for a camping festival in September can’t wait to use this! Thank you for the real life test too!
Hope you have a good time

I'm glad to hear you stayed dry!!!!
Is there enough room in this tent for an inflatable queen size mattress and 2 med size dogs / 2 adults?
@katherinetsikitas817 the 4p is a 9x7

I was thoroughly impressed with the Coleman Sundome's performance during the storm. Solid tent at a great price for beginner camping wannabes.
To many plastic clips and junk. Garbage cheap Chinese made
Went camping in the rain in the mountains 2 days ago with this exact tent and can confirm - bone dry! Definitely worth the price and perfect for car camping. Four trips now and no complaints :)
Great to hear

This tent was impressive during that downpour!!!!!
Receiving my Sundome 4 with dark room technology tomorrow. Thanks for the review. You are also very entertaining.
Thank so much. Good luck! 👍

Great review, convinced me to buy it, I was afraid that intense rain could bypass, but, its great! Thanks!

VERY THOROUGH AND HELPFUL, ESPECIALLY FOR US NEWBIES! 🎉👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💕
I enjoy my Coleman tent. I don't just trust the fabric. I treat all of my tents and tarps with 3M Scotch Guard to ensure staying dry! Great review!
That's always a best practice. I usually seam seal tents as well but wanted a clean test for the video to gauge it's performance accurately.

Ordered the 6 person model today. Thanks for the review! Had the weather master 10 but that is WAY too much tent unless you have like 8 kids lol.
You'll be happy with the size I'm sure.
Nice review Samantha 👍
Thanks so much for checking it out!
I watch your channel to
I saw your review of the pop- up by Coleman and your problem with the zipper ripping.
Great channel! Love your enthusiasm!
Thanks so much!
I can't wait to go camping
Me too!!!! Going out tomorrow night 🌙
Great review! Gotta get one soon
Camping season is right around the corner!!!
Great review, I have it saved to my Amazon cart lol. Thanks!
Hope it works out for you! I was very impressed this little tent! Good luck!!!
Thanks for the great video!
You're welcome!!!
Thanks for your awesome review! I'm buying this bec of you! I just wish they had this color in the Coleman PH website. They only have green, light blue, and red.
Check the links on the description of the video, those lead to this navy color 👌
@@LoneCrowAdventures thanky! 😊
Coleman Company was a fantastic brand for outside and inside camping needs.
The company has been sold to Newell Brands. Little different now.
Really I didn't know!?
Wow this review is so useful. I was thinking to get this one or a Coleman xt (I'd like your opinions) I need it for camping on medium/high mountain.
This is a pretty solid tent as long as it's not windy on the mountain. If you expect wind I'd go with the XT because the rsinfly comes all the way down to the ground and is less likely to be taken in wind. I don't know that the XT is still in stock though. 🤔
Best tent review I've seen 👌
Thank you kindly! I appreciate the feedback!
Mine was only good for a storm or two. Then it leaked. I plan to waterproof the seams before I take it out again. Otherwise love this tent.
I wonder if you should apply some dwr as well.
does the center pole go over the poles of the tent or under them in that hole?
It goes under them I believe
I had no idea about this! Thanks so much for sharing. I appreciate learning new things.
I had no idea! WoW!
great review!
Thanks 😊
Great review. Thank you so much 😊
You're welcome! Hope the video helped out! Cheers!
I have a Coleman Flatwoods 4 which is very similar. It is a good value. I actually end up using it a lot more than my expensive backpacking stuff.
Yeah, coleman has been around for years and is a trusted brand.
Both are very easy set ups. Standing room in the cabin is a good perk.
great video going to buy mine now lol
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you for the review
You're welcome
What is the best tent to have on hand that you could live in when shtf hits the fan
The Luxe Hercules is a solid option, gives nice headroom. I recently purchased a canvas bell tent as well which is a good option as well. This is the one I bought! amzn.to/3ifPOST
Thanks for the wonderful tips? Can u recoy a Coleman 6 person tent with dark room technology,. Or another manufacturer?
I did a review of the Coleman 10p cabin Darkroom tent. I wasn't wild about the design of that tent but the video features how well the Darkroom technology works. It gets very dark inside! Here is the link to that video if you are interested th-cam.com/video/pihoZmXNfJc/w-d-xo.html
In the description of the sundome review there is a link to the 6p dark version which is the same construction as the tent reviwed Herr.
Love this review!!!
That's a good storm 😯 ...how it handle snow ? ❄️ Can the awning be collapsed to prevent catching high wind?
One of the bad things about this tent is that the awning cannot be collapsed. You could take out the support pole but then it would hang in the doorway. I'm not sure how it handles snow. I'd be worried about ventilation in this tent in cold temps though. Ventilation is fine in summer and fall but in winter I'd be concerned.
@@LoneCrowAdventures yeah for a few times I go in snow..those base camp snowsport tent probably like 400!!!...fall trips can get a few inches too. I have a Coleman 8 insta, but it's only me now...too big.
Thank you for this video
You're welcome!
thanx good review
Your welcome 🙏 I appreciate it!
It can withstand 30mph wind for short periods,I just had one get shredded in a 3 hr storm with 35 mph winds
If you are the person thar bought the tent and have your recept you can send the tent to colman usa thet will inspect the tent and mostly replace it.
Wow that's ridiculous!!!!!
Even if you don't have the receipt I'd contact them and see if they'd be willing to send out a new one!
Thanks so much for checking it out!!!! I appreciate it!
@colemanusa
Could I recommend between the 2 Coleman tents,. Evanston 8vs Montana 8?
That would be a good versus video!
Is therre any difference between the sundome and the Skydome? Im having the hardest time trying to see the difference.
Absolutely, send it back and get a replacement. That one is clearly defective.
Thank you. I really enjoyed that review!
Thanks for stopping by!
Good review.
Thank so much!!!!
Excellent review . Thanks TCC
Thanks so much for taking the time to check it out!!!!
Wish we knew how it stand WIND, LOTS OF WIND GUSTS!
You can see it in this video where I expose it to extreme weather! Way tooooo windy that day! th-cam.com/video/ap6-8KxmL2g/w-d-xo.html
This is my dream tent😍🎪
Well go ahead and get yourself one! You won't be dissatisfied!
Nice review!
Thanks so much for stopping by to check it out!
Rain? What is it? Haven’t really heard it since December.
Dealing with drought?
Cuanto cuesta esa tienda 😮 respuesta al correo electrónico gracias desde Costa Rica saludos
Great video . Thanks.
I had a Coleman highline 2 that went through a nasty storm while camping and not a single drop got inside
Honestly, they do make really good tents!!!
They do i bought a Coleman sundome 6 person tent i haven't used yet im hoping to a lot of camping this year with the sundome
