  • Sharpening a knife with stones, or diamond abrasives, or ceramic will give you a sharp working edge. Stropping your blade will take it to the next level. What is stropping? How do you strop? And what tools do you need? #SharpMatters #TheWorkshop

    At 3:37 he mentions that it's important to strop at the same angle as the sharpening, which is correct; Yet the guided system has 17 and 20 degrees for sharpening, where the stropping kit has 22 and 25 degree angles. So there is a bit of conflicting and confusing information here, guys.

    • @WorkSharpOutdoor
      @WorkSharpOutdoor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks for calling this out! It's true and may be oversimplifying to instruct to strop at the same angle. Stropping at a slightly wider (more obtuse) angle creates the slightest micro bevel. A micro beveled edge is considered a stronger edge, although not preferred by all - some want a steep angle for maximum sharpness. In this case you would strop at the exact same angle as you sharpened to. If you are going to err to one way, err on the side of stropping at a wider angle, this will make sure to completely remove the burr.

    I've used cardboard before when I had nothing else for an axe, worked fine. I make knives and for hunting or kitchen knives I NEVER put a razor edge on them. I put a "butcher's edge" on working knives that are going to cut food or meat. Scalpels are only sharpened to 600-800 grit, enough said.
    If cutting leather or wood carving then you need a mirror finished edge. My leather knives get stropped with 16,000 grit diamond compound, even the replaceable utility knife razor blades get stropped and never need to be replaced. LOL

    Ive had the Worksharp WSGSS sharpener for several years now. No expert user here. I just sharpened a Kabar BK-7, and was able to get a smooth push cut with printing paper going only to the ceramic tool. I then used the strop, and the knife could almost fall through the paper with very little effort. I do find it a bit tricky to judge the stropping angle correctly, as you are going in the opposite direction. It is amazing how quickly the Kabar takes a decent edge using the extra coarse diamond plate to begin the process.This was a great buy!

    If I've been away from sharpening for awhile. I do find that sitting down to polish a knife blade on the strope helps me to regain some of that muscle memory. MUCH more forgiving as opposed to a 600gr dia stone. It'll take your sharpening to that next level.

    I've tried hard, soft, smooth, and fuzzy leather strops with diamond and also other compounds. I've never been able to get a sharp edge. It's sharp before I strop, so I'm doing something wrong. I make sure my angle is low and my strokes are light. I try and strop occasionally, but for the most part I've given up on strops.

    In my quest to learn to sharpen my hand tools for my shop, and my kitchen knives, I discovered that there is a HUGE range of 'trot' variance within the different colors of stropping compounds. I just ordered some 60,000 grit green compound from one source. The green seems to range from about 10,000 to 60,000. Jeweler's rouge, is in the 30,000 grit range. Black can be about 800 grit. White seems to vary every bit as much. There appears to be no standards for colors and grit ranges.

    @1:50 - Microns are a measurement of the size of the abrasive material in the green compound. You explain it like "micron" is the actual abrasive in the green compound.

    2 Q The 1st u were starting at the base and pulling to the tip, in this process I do both tip to base and base to tip. Reason ,I think it evens the blade better as its hard to keep the pull of the knife even. 2nd u talked about "Cardboard" what about "Old Jeans" or other fabric that u might recommend. Have u done any study on this?

    Do you guys offer a strop add on for the benchstone sharpener? I have been looking for a new strop but would love to have something as part of my benchstone kit. Would absolutely make this a killer setup.

    • @WorkSharpOutdoor
      @WorkSharpOutdoor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Technically no.... but you sparked my curiosity. 5 minutes in the shop and I was able to create a strop for the Benchstone. The Guided sharpening System has an available upgrade kit which comes with extra coarse diamond, extra fine diamond and a leather strop. These will fit the Benchstone with the exception of the leather strop. In order to make it fit the ends need to be trimmed back 1/8 of an inch on each side to expose the metal base plate. Then, remove the ends of the Benchstone using a T20 driver. This will allow the abrasives to come off. Be careful the ceramic plate is a little fragile. Remove whichever plate you use the least (I recommend the Coarse). Replace it with the leather strop and you're ready to rock. By the way.... you just helped me make my favorite new sharpener.

    Great job as always! Again, I'm here with a question 😃
    Is it just the same stropping a hollow grind? Like a straight razor? What angle should I hold it at?

    • @WorkSharpOutdoor
      @WorkSharpOutdoor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stropping is the same with a hollow grind. Match the same angle that your knife was sharpened to when stropping. We have an upcoming video about how to tell which angle your knife is sharpened to, but the gist is, color the bevel with a sharpie, then take a few light strokes on a fine abrasive and see if the angle matches up. When the sharpie gets totally erased you've found the angle. then strop at that same angle.

    Does it make sense to also use multiple strops with progressively finer "grit" as we do with stones?

    • @soner818
      @soner818 ปีที่แล้ว

      Green compound is about 8000 grit, recommended for metals. Blue compound is 14000 grit, recommended for plastics. So you could try the blue compound with is finer grit to polish the knife more. The smoother the knife the less friction and resistance when cutting.

  • @mikesouthworth3644
    @mikesouthworth3644 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question. You guys sell the guided sharpener with a 17 and 20 degree angle guide and then the upgrade kit for that same sharpener includes the strop and 25 degree guides yet you say in this video that it is important to strop and the same angle as you sharpened the blade at. Is there a reason for this or no? I’m newer to stropping and genuinely lost on this as the field sharpener is all set to the same 20 degree guide including the strop.

    I'm somewhat new to knives, I am getting a benchmade shipped to me fresh from the factory. I have heard that the factory edge is mediocre at best, would stropping the blade when it arrives help or would it be better to sharpen the blade first and then strop after? I dont need it to be insanely sharp, but I do want it better than standard. (blade steel will be Magnacut, not sure if that matters much)

    • @WorkSharpOutdoor
      @WorkSharpOutdoor  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your knife will definitely be sharp when it arrives, yes there is a small percentage of knives from any factory that may not be quite as sharp as some would like but its a small amount. That said, you can improve the edge with a hone or strop right out of the box!

    • @WorkSharpOutdoor
      @WorkSharpOutdoor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the tip! It's important to follow the curve of the knife so that the cutting edge is contacting the abrasive at a perpendicular angle. This is especially important near the tip in order to keep a sharp tip. The knife will end up pointing nearly straight down the abrasive.
