He doesn't just grab it he constantly smooths it over and purses his lips and juts his jaw out as he does it as if he's readjusting his composure as the man in charge of the situation (when he clearly isn't ofcourse). I find it hysterical.
The way he goes "am I, didn't know that?" After being called a "sad little man" is absolutely classic. It is something that have to admit has slipped into my own vocabulary when someone calls me something insulting
I think Dawn almost reflects the audience’s view because she’s clearly repulsed by him and always seems uncomfortable when he’s around but there’s a rare sympathetic turn. Like when he blows the trivia in the pub and Finch starts berating him. She sort of sticks up for him because she knows Finch is just a straight up asshole where as David really is a pathetic man-child who can’t help his antics.
@@leahcimolrac1477 Yes interesting you noted that cos despite this moment in the first episode Dawn does have Brent's back at times and she needn't have defended him to Finch cos you'd think she'd think he deserved it but I guess it shows why Dawn was a good person that she'd even support the guy everyone hated.
That is nothing ! I did the same when my Employers stupidly put me in sole charge of Stationery in 1995...22 years later I am STILL using those Post-It notes though the pens DID dry up ! lol
They pack so much in to these short scenes, the fact brent leans in to oliver getting excited about pranking dawn is hilarious, especially as oliver just sits there grinning in accordance until it all goes wrong and then the two of them are sitting in a room with no desk infront of them, one staring at the ground and the other staring at him. I duno why but its so stupid.
I used to work in an office, & it was just like this. The feeling of working for a tyrant, where men & women trying to act like men carry the torch in belittling hard working staff who couldn't care less about gross profits & overheads. The atmosphere is unnatural & tense. Worse that being in church aged 9.
The pilot episode of the US version was basically just the script of the 1st episode of the UK version but a few different "americanised" jokes like his nickname for jen being Camilla parker Bowles but the nickname for jan being Hilary Clinton and changing some of the dialogue as they thought it was too harsh The only scene that's different (Jim's pencil wall) was actually a reshoot that they did 6 months later.
The most important thing for any company is making money no matter what they try and tell you that is the nain purpose of business. Everything else is secondary to that
I know it was early days in the series but I find Dawn crying to be out of character. She is quite timid and quiet but I think she would have been defensive from the moment David accused her or look at him like he is an idiot. I think it should have been a different character in that spot.
David Brent is the manifestation of all my personality flaws
i could make a better comment than that. last one i made ... 950 likes. even funnier. so dont get all...
And what Brent misses out Partridge and Fawlty fill in.
"Oh gosh you're not like that awful boss are you!?"
I'm so sorry.
He is the epitome of every middle management berķ in every office in country
Love how David avoids looking Dawn in the eye after she starts crying
He realises he's torn her apart. Hence..' you wanker....'
but is it real cry or mind blownd
I love how David Brent always grabs his tie in a tricky situation. lol
Paying homage to Oliver Hardy, one of his comedic heroes
He does it a lot in the 1st 2 episodes.
Two for a tenner....yes please four
He doesn't just grab it he constantly smooths it over and purses his lips and juts his jaw out as he does it as if he's readjusting his composure as the man in charge of the situation (when he clearly isn't ofcourse). I find it hysterical.
Best line : "ooo that was a joke there" Gets me everytime
LOL cringeworthy defined
'better do these now actually' love how Brent's trying to change the subject.
Yep it's classic, such great acting :-)
Lol and whilst pretending to be focusing on the content of the papers but visibly monitoring how to limit the damage he's just done.
" Brent mused ..." Brent is by far the greatest Comedy Character ever written by anyone !!!
"Whats that thing you put in the end of joints?"
"Roach"
"Caught you out drug addict!"
2:28 that slow look up - absolute killer
Those cheeky little looks to the camera through out the entire series is what made it for me
+Dave Brent I second that. when hes offered the promotion is the best one IMO
sheepish as fuck
I love the little gesture he does with his hand after he jokes "caught you drug addict...nahhhh I was just..."
Alex Espinoza so subtle and brilliant 😂
Haha.
."..I'd say at one moment or another every bloke in the office has woken up at the crack of Dawn"
The way he goes "am I, didn't know that?" After being called a "sad little man" is absolutely classic. It is something that have to admit has slipped into my own vocabulary when someone calls me something insulting
"Stealing... thieving..." gets me every time.
The best thing here is Oliver's shift from schoolboy excitement to squirming awkwardness.
The story about the young Greek guy gets me everytime. The buildup, the pause, then laying into him
Well. He was rubbish.
@@kalmesHe was rubbish
I love it how says 'better do these now actually' with a little frown... anything he can do to change the subject
"Well done, settling in...practical jokes for the good..." lol
The genius of the scene is how David Brent's prank backfires on him and Dawn exposes his pathetic nature in front of the temp.
The genius of this scene is... precisely everything that happens in the scene?
Your comment said less than nothing.
@@wintermute8315 prat
@@wintermute8315 you wanker. such a sad little man
2:42 - "Good Girl"
I'm in tears. This bloke kills me!!!
thanks now my palm is fused to my face
"You steal a 1000 post it notes at 12p and youve made....????? (Counting) profit 😂😂😂😂😂 hilarious 😂😂😂
Stealing... Thieving... Lol
I suppose Dawn is the only person who's ever said what everyone actually thinks. And in the first episode as well! Good girl.
Nah I like david lol

I stole post-it notes from my first job and I was still writing down my to-do lists on them for about 2 years after that lol.
That is nothing ! I did the same when my Employers stupidly put me in sole charge of Stationery in 1995...22 years later I am STILL using those Post-It notes though the pens DID dry up ! lol
srty srtyy If you sold them instead of writing on them you could have made... profit... on that.
Your a sad little man... Am i?
Leeds Leeds Leeds
Didn't knowwwwww that
Better do these now actually
You're.
+tris baker
Bet you're a laugh at parties.
They can if they bring a typewriter with them, or a laptop.
can tell rickys been through some real life situations like this
Again Brent is misunderstood here, a clever prank, but the staff under him can't keep up , he's on another level unfortunately .
Remember- "probably an entertainer 3rd"
I mean with talks of redundancy in their office, you'd have to believe he was serious.
"the girls love me" hahaha
An employer should never make a joke about firing an employee. For so many reasons.
You haven't really understood this have you?
"Will you be the godfather to my child" followed by that expression at 3:50 - absolute brilliance
"you've made........... Profit" I still say that whenever I do math. Or say the word "profit"
" Will you be the Godfather to my child " Aww HERE Gervais stop it mate I am in agony with my ribs hahahahahahaha Gervais and Merchant are Gods!!
His face at 2:30 is priceless, lol.
His face at 2:31 is just GENIUS

''its just a prank Bro!''
I just remembered it was a paper company, which makes it even funnier... How dared she steal post-it notes???
This scene was definitely better than in the US version haha
Much better- the American Office was good season 2 onwards but in a different way to the classic UK version
Don't judge the US version in season 1 but because they completely changed their concept after that and it was genius
you can really feel the atmosphere in that room, eeesh
how can you dislike the office? Genius tv & comedy gold. Sue me.
2:29 his face absolutely kills me. He looks like a little kid who's been caught misbehaving
I'm the Greek he was referring to, and yeah, I was pretty rubbish.
Racist!
You can be the godfather to my child
This show isn't a comedy, its just real life
The Office is amazing.
That guilty squirming expression to the camera is one of the funniest things I've ever seen...
"Stealing ..-...THIEVING .... "
probably the most sadly awkward scene ever. Brilliant though.
'Partly down to me, sure.'
This scene is dangerous.. Can stop you breathing from over laughter... Changed comedy forever..
what timing and tiny expressions - genius
“Am I? Didn’t know that”
The UK Office is LEAGUES ahead of the US Office.
I'm sure at one point everbody has had a boss like David Brent....
The best thing is he couldn't count 12p(1000).
He should have followed through... she'd obviously been stealing post it notes.
My god I don't think we appreciated this masterpiece when it first aired.
This was/is one of the best comedy shows of all time.
I like how the revelation that it was a joke was much more awkward and subtle here rather than the in-your-face moment in the American version.
The shows are polar opposites with the American one not in the same league!
@@Squats200 yeah because the UK one is more realistic and the US is more of a Sitcom. both did really well in their own field
1:26 he checks to see if Rick is playing along😂😂
2:25 "That was a joke."
35 seconds later, she realizes what he said
Ricky is a comedic powerhouse
David Brent is me with my worst exaggerated. It’s good to think how matter how much you make mistakes he does it 100 times worse.
Total comedy gold 😂😂
His darkest moment.
Looks like the temp is trying to physically distance himself from Brent. Brillant scene.

He doesn't come across as a tyrant, believe me I know, I live with one and he's a c***. (NOTHING, is worse than being in church aged 9).
Krimeney Katz she’s obviously exaggerating you drip
Yes Bethany, I remember you.
That girl who kept stealing the post it notes.
Bethany Fether ahahah brilliant comparison I wanna be your friend
“Come in!”
I just can't get over how the US variant of this scene is just this, verbatim.
If someone didn't know what awkward meant i would show them this video hahaha
"Got your bible on you Ricky?" 🤣😂😂😂
".. probably entertainer third"... gold
The "good girl" is so cringe.
what episode is this ??
The first episode
"You steal 1000 post-it notes at 12p, and you've made... profit on that"
Much Better than the US version of the show.
"He was rubbish!" 😂
I watched the US version first and I never realised this scene was done in the British one beforehand.
The pilot episode of the US version was basically just the script of the 1st episode of the UK version but a few different "americanised" jokes like his nickname for jen being Camilla parker Bowles but the nickname for jan being Hilary Clinton and changing some of the dialogue as they thought it was too harsh

Lol no wonder why this is Steven Gerrards favourite series. David Brent is funny!
Even Stevie G wouldn't slip up as much as Brent 😂
Is it…?
Dawn then released a single called “Shedding Tears”. 😂
I love this scene 😂
This is comic genius

Reminds of when the Americans remade The Inbetweeners and they changed “Bus Wankeeeersss!” To “BuS tUrDzz!! 🤪”

This scene is hilarious, but I always feel sorry for Dawn, particularly because I crushed on her from the start.

The UK version is soo much Darker than the US.
"Post it notes!" :'D
You steal 1000 post it notes at 12p and youve made.... ... profit on that... genius acting as he cant compute the figure!
