2 - 3 times the price of an OB8/OBX-a - 4 X the new Oberheim OBX8 - 80X a plug in? Does buying a vintage OBX make sense?? You are welcome to subscribed here: / @josesvintagekeys
This synth was on my mind all week, and then this video shows up. I'd take this over Jup-8 all week. The OP-X Pro II gives a small taste of what this is like. Too bad she's most unreliable.
You have an ear for detail or you don't. I had the OBX8 which is a good synth in it's modern own right but its sound did nothing for me, just like other reissues and digital clones like the infamous Boutique series (only the VP03 had something to it) or the Yamaha Reface series (only the CP was impressive). I'm no purist as in no modern stuff at all, but lots of the oldies immediately provoke emotional states with me, which helps my process immensely, since I compose on the machines and seldom write on a piano and then copy it over a synth. If you like the X over the 8, it must be something really special because the 8 is magic (and soon your 8 will be mine, thanks for that!). If I may ask, is that a Linn or a Linn 2 you got there?
It’s a Linndrum - which is 2nd version - the first one is called LM-1. I prefer the X because it was the first sunth that blew me away on Rush Moving Picture and sound is closer to 4/8 voice. So that’s why I made the move from OB8 to OBX - with a little pain in my heart ;-)
@@josesvintagekeys I found it hard to eject good synths too, most notably the Jupiter 6. Awesome looking too. Maybe I'll trade in one of the Juno 60's for it, once I realize it is a stupid idea to want a "Dual Mode" Ju-60 sound. Holy cow, I've seen prices going up but in case of the LM-1 its beyond unrealistic, so I got a Linndrum instead as well. Hope you had a great time at Superbooth and thanks again for taking my OB8 to the doctor for me! Now its about time to watch your latest vid (and follow its rabbit holes). See you soon!
@@BlackMan614 I only got an OB8 after I had the OBX8. The OB8 has a completely different way of producing sound, and with 12 calibration pots per voice they all sound a little different, especially since they're now 40 years old. There's a fragility to that many calibrations and I like that. My hearing is fine; maybe my taste is not :)
@@jairkerker2821 You are not the only one with vintage synths. And what you are hearing is the failing of these now 50+ year components, along with your hearing. Deny it all you want.
Had the X8 and sold it to get an 8 within 2 months. It's a good synth but not very moving compared to the 8, and no "vintage" button will enhance anything to my regret. Nice to see Jose and Retro in one comment section, love both you guys!
I will buy one too or maybe both ❤ love ur stuff
nice video, is it possible to know the string parameters of Flash Gordon (in the space capsule) thanks
Sure sounds very special..!

well it does need service - given the age (45 y) - but after that it's very reliable!

Your hearing is 50% of what it was when the classics were new. Think about it.

Just get an OB-X8 and you have all the bases covered while taking up less space.
The X8 sounds very different to the X
@retrosound72 only if you own one - you know this :-). Love your videos @retrosound72
