I recently heard this song for the first time and immediately thought of my 3 yr old son who survived against all the odds and has flourished and thrived and this has been in my heart as “ode to Arthur”…. I just now saw this video, having not known if this song was written about a child or friend or lover etc. I’m overwhelmed. Yes. Thank you for putting into musical poetry and imagery what that love is.
This gives me main character vibe!!! If I were a book character, and I faced challenges, battles, losses, and found love, this is what it would play after the last page of the book as the reader can no longer reach me but I'm walking through an empty field, watching the sunrise, sword on my right hand, a smile on my face and wind blowing my hair. It is SO GOOD!

I'm running a musical-inspired d&d campaign with my partner currently, and Fish in a Birdcage (especially this song) voices one of my main characters (for anyone interested, he's a powerful and popular bard named Gustavo :) ), and one of my favorite parts of prep time is getting to sit down and really listen to the lyrics of these songs. It's so fun listening through and reading the lyrics to see how they can explain--either directly or through metaphor--whatever it is I'm trying to tell the players in that moment. This song has ALWAYS been my favorite though!! (On the slim chance you're reading this Fish in a Birdcage, hopefully this doesn't feel too weird! The line "I believe in who you are" hits different for me, idk. It negates all the pressure of society, others and most importantly, oneself and reduces the believe not in ones actions, but in "you" as a person. There is no failing or succeeding as long as you are yourself. As someone putting a lot on myself all of the time, that shit almost made me cry. beautiful song!

Only first listened to this song a couple weeks ago, but since then what I assumed the song was about was the narrator wanting to talk to and/or give advice to their child self. And I'm aware now that the actual intention was for the song to be for a unborn child, which is a really sweet sentiment! I'm just sharing because I guess I thought it was cool just how differently a listener could interpret a song from it's original idea. ALSO, the strings are SO GOOD!!! They're crisp where they need to be but ultimately have a flowing feel throughout, and it's just GREAT.
