OMG! Being underdressed is my pet peeve right now. Just last night, I went with a date to his friend’s 50th birthday party. I wore a casual outfit: black jeans, a black and gold silk blouse, black boots, stud earrings and an understated gold necklace.
Most of the other women at the party were wearing ripped jeans, a plaid flannel shirt over a t-shirt, and Crocs or sneakers.
This was a Saturday nigh 50th b-day party dinner for a man who is a successful executive at a big New England-based company. Crocs? WTF? Don’t even get me started on the men. Facial hair, dirty Boston sports logo t-shirts & hats, Crocs!!!, and flannel shirts.
I am desperate for social life in which I can dress well & not feel like an idiot who put too much effort into an event no one else cared about enough to even trade their Crocs for Danskos.

I do think that we should complement people’s well put together outfit or eye catching pieces. When I get comments about what I have on, it’s such a booster or confirmation. I try to be verbal, too, to complement. I don’t do it for lip service; only when I do feel it. It has never been not well received. Doing this can increase fashion consciousness and more confidence in our choices and aesthetics.

Pants too tight, buttons pulling, yanking my shirt or sweater down all day as it is cropped!

I think taking great care of your clothes, making sure they are ironed and look the best they can is so important. I know someone who has gorgeous, designer clothes.... but they are usually wrinkled, or the cuffs of jackets look stained because they need cleaning etc. Sometimes it's the small details that can make such a difference!

Outfits that are wrong for the climate or wrong for the occasion. Strappy sandals on icy cobblestones. Heels or dark soled shoes on a boat ride. White long trousers on a visit to a working farm. I try to dress appropriately but when plans change spontaneously and I get it all wrong, it's hard to think of anything other than, "I wish I had worn....".

You had me laughing at the retro portion. I’m a big fan of historybounding, so incorporating historical clothes (much older than retro) into modern variations so that it doesn’t look costume-y. While I never end up looking trendy, I still don’t look outdated because the style is too old to have ever trended in living memory. I’ve been rocking late Victorian and Edwardian inspirations outside of my work clothes. I hope to play around with medieval and Regency wear next summer if I finish sewing them in time.

Wearing age appropriate. What I wore when 20 is not going to help me 30 years on..I was never a short dress girl exactly but some items don;t age with us. I have worn things just out of stubborness because Ive had them years and not worn them enough! Another thing Ive enjoyed is dressing hyper smart for just an ordinary day out. The respect I am shown when out dressed hyper smart is 1) a bit unfair, I just wish folk would be polite all the time but 2) it almost feels like I can glide through the day rather free of stress...Thank you. I was a bit reluctant to watch this video. For the reason I'm 50+ and I don't feel my age. My body shape allows me to ware clothes as of a 20 year old. I have only a few outfits which meet that criteria. I must confess I don't do basic or what's expexted of my age. I don't do this for attention I get plenty at home. It's confidence which NEVER goes out of style. I was certain you were negatively going to speak about my type. Surprisingly you touch all the points I stick to. I follow trends to some extent. It all depends if I can find a particular item where I typically shop. Thrift store boutiques or high end consignment stores. My philosophy on this matter is, why pay full price when I don't have to. It's good for the environment and better for my wallet. I have this rule, if I buy a blouse, pants, dress, etc. I clear out one of the mentioned item(s).I very much relate with all you suggested. In my opinion one doesn't have to be mega ritch to look well put together. All it's necessary is some effort in looking presentable. As human beings we're all beautiful, add honor to the mix can't go wrong with that demonstration.

Unfortunately the mistake I make most often is not trying the outfit on before the event. I end up with it not looking the way I imagined it would in my head or having things I need to tweak and basically running around trying to make it work and then not feeling my best at the event. Maybe someday I'll learn. 😑

Great video. I feel that what you call "dumb, little things" is more of a result us being told to accept ourselves the way we are. Then we take it a little bit more farther and walk around with dirty bra straps, old pj pants, or clothes which show all the 15 folds on my hanging belly because I was told I should just accept myself. And the last whould be easy to fix with wearing clothes that fit.

    Once again, you nailed it.
    Some comments:
I did distressed jeans in the 60s-70s my hippie/boho days. I am so over it now. I think a bit of distressing, that looks natural, at ONE knee can be cool in an ironic way as long as the rest of the outfit is chic/thoughtful.
Clothes that don't fit? I think one of the biggest mistakes that so many women make is not wearing a good supportive bra that keeps those girls separated and lifted. It makes such a big difference to your silhouette. Oh and handwash in gentle detergent nightly if you sweat a lot or every other night if you don't. Your bra will last much longer.
Workout clothes all day long. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. But I try to buy really nice workout clothes and I really do work out so nothing jiggles that shouldn't. That said, when I go down to my condo lobby to pick up mail or a package, I always change into something on-trend and chic.
I always overdress. That doesn't mean bling. I don't even have pierced ears and I wear an Apple watch. It's just that I go a step above and beyond. A smart blazer over a sweater, a cool belt, a good bag, a chic headband, etc. I follow your tips!!! Yes, sometimes I stand out but I like how looking good makes me feel so I just do it.
Hiding yourself. Oh yeah. My girlfriends always comment on my belts: "Oh I wish I had a waistline!" Believe me, my waist is not all that. I'm 71 and a 12-14. I try to explain how you can trick the eye with a belt, details on the shoulders or a wide lapel, high-waisted pants over heels, all the things you talk about. But, even though some of them spend a lot of $$$ on clothes, they always go for the same old baggy long sweater, in the best cashmere, the too-wide pants, the over-oversized blazer, the Lagenlook all-black look.
    I just love your videos.
And yes, don't let anyone hold you back. I'll wear my leathers and OTK boots and damn the "you're too old or too fat for that!"

Spot on! I'm right there with you. Just a couple of years younger than you and currently smaller (6/8, maybe a 10), but have been larger (16/18 jeans, 14/16 button-down blouse/shirt, L/XL) as recently as 5-8 yrs ago. I still have some of those larger items -- e.g. long sleeved button-up blouse, size 18. WAY too big for my current size, but I will wear it as a "shacket" (shirt jacket) as a layer over a tank top or t-shirt, sometimes belted. Mostly I've kept favorites because of their color or fabric or cut.

What doesn't help my painting clothes problem is I wear scrub tops and leisure type pants for work. It also doesn't help when u can gain inches and still fit in them. Lol. Elastic waistbands may be comfortable but they are also dangerous.

There are "barefoot" insoles which I prefer to those truncated sock thingies because they neither stick out nor slide down.
One thing I notice about outfits in a negative way is when someone is aiming for a certain status look but it does not suit their body shape, is an obvious cheap knock-off and/or is worn at the wrong place or time. I have seen so many women wearing what I call a Chaneloid in the supermarket and flabby, passive Kanje Wests on the commuter train.

Great advice as always, Anna! There’s another fashion YTer that I sometimes watch and I noticed she has bought at least 20 fairly expensive one-shoulder style tops and dresses, maybe even more. The same for styles with cut-outs. I wonder what she will do when these styles don’t look current anymore? It’s better not to to go overboard on trends, or to stick to classic styles that have been recently revived. I really love the polo (pointed-collar) knit tops and sweaters that have come back in style and have bought several different ones, but they are in my basic colors and I don’t think they will date as fast, or as badly, as some other trends. I like to stick to mostly classics and add trends sparingly, choose the least extreme ones, and only if I really love them and they work seamlessly with my classic wardrobe. Updated footwear is one way I love to add trends. It’s important to keep the silhouette modern, though, no skinny jeans with tunics and ankle boots; wide-leg jeans with a fitted, short top are much more current.

Those are the things we end up buying by mistake on Vinted, because the seller leaves out the crucial details like 'cut out' or 'cropped' (and the photo sucked) or is that just me? 😂

I wore platforms back in the day, like when the Spice Girls were the influencers and some of them were crazy, BUT platform heels like the girl on the right 1:04 blow my mind!! And now....I feel old😬
On another note, I see people underdressed every single time that I go somewhere where you should be dressed up...ie: nice dinner, court, parties. And I mean like more people than not. Maybe because I live in the Midwest, I don't know. ( Midwesterners don't come for me - you know😳)

The dirty, scuffed, broken-down shoes with smart outfits is one that I used to be guilty of too. As some point I noticed that the really chic women around town always had great shoes - e.g., not an afterthought / grabbed from whatever happens to be by the front door. I've noticed a fair few men doing this too - why spend $1500 on a suit and then wear it with dirty, scuffed shoes with worn down soles?

Your feather outfit makes me think of Hopescope….have you ever seen her videos? She bought a custom made dress out of balloons……as the night wore on it was shrinking and balloons were bursting….it was hysterical. On another note and trend focused….have you seen the “new in” section at Zara? They have taken oversized to a whole new level…..

I have to stop buying clothes that are too big. This comes of Fear of Returns, especially during lockdowns, so I’ve been automatically sizing up. It’s exacerbated by the facts that: 1) sizing is so unbelievably inconsistent, even within a given brand; and 2) fit information is lacking or misleading. I ordered a linen jacket from H&M that said “relaxed fit” in one size down from my regular size, but it was three sizes too big. That’s not relaxed, it’s hugely oversized! When I re-ordered it in a S and XS, they sent some $15 print poly top by mistake but charged me $150 for the jacket they didn’t send. (This brand has an annoying habit of not actually looking at the items they pack, but just glancing at the code, like the time I received red pants instead of the green sweater I ordered!) It’s so irritating, when I tried to order the linen jacket again, it was sold out in XS and S. The overall effect on my wardrobe of all these unintentionally oversized clothes isn’t all that flattering. I’m done with H&M and fast-fashion, it’s just false economy to shop there.

I’m definitely guilty of wearing my dirty but not necessarily ugly shoes and old jeans (sometimes with some mud spatter) and old jacket from the walk with the dog to the grocery store because I can’t be bothered to get changed just to go to the store real quick. 😬 I do the same with workout clothes for sure because that helps me to actually do my workout after the errands/shopping.

I purposely got rid of the oversized and too comfy clothes that cause me to feel tired and lazy. I try to intentionally get dressed for the day and just layer as needed since I’m predominantly at home. Workout pants, paint on pants, crop tops (with a figure to support it or not) are what I would say is a big no-no. I simply struggle to take these women seriously.
As a woman who lives in a small city and less the big city I find it difficult to find a happy medium between too casual and too over the top.

I think trying to find the perfect fit on things is the worst. I mean I'm sure I've made all those faux pas at some point, but being uncomfortable in your clothes is the least fashionable you can be, constantly adjusting , pulling it up (jeans shimmy anyone?). Tugging down a shirt , fixing the.v in your v-neck, yuck. If nudity wasn't jail time sometimes I feel like I'd opt for it. Lol

I think that sometimes. I'm 71. But as long as things aren't too tight, or reveal too much, I say, GO FOR IT! I wear leather, OTK boots, colour, off the shoulder, all the things.

I'm almost 10 yrs older than you, and yes, there are a few things I won't wear -- micro-miniskirts, "Daisy Dukes" (ultra short shorts) come to mind. But on the whole, I worry less that something is too young looking and more that is not flattering or just plain ugly, at least on me.

    • @Elizekolbe
      @Elizekolbe ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks for the advice. Yes I stay away from anything revealing or to tight. I love classic clothes but definitely not frumpy 😂. Also I add something interesting never boring.🇿🇦

    • @antoniaz
      @antoniaz ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Elizekolbe I was just fooling around in my closet and just put together thick black leggings (not leather because with the boots it would be too much), white OTK Sam Edelman block-heeled boots, a white cashmere peplum top (ass-covering) from Club Monaco and a wide tan belt under a conservative slightly oversized (but fitted) white/black/tan plaid blazer.
Now I just know my friends will say "I could never wear that." But I', thinking, "yeah not over the top but just about hitting the top." Can hardly wait to step out like this. 🙂
