I fell in love with Eddie after I heard him sing Empty Chairs. And his performance as Hawking left me speechless. And as a huge huge Potter fanatic, I was sooooo happy to hear that he was Newt. I honestly can't imagine anyone else as Newt Scamandar.
Every one of these I’ve seen so far has been just rosy and positive. Here, Eddie is honest, direct, retrospective, and introspective on the good and the bad of his acting experiences, the rights and wrongs, and the lessons he’s learned as an actor and as a person. It’s refreshing.
It's rare to encounter someone who can slip so effortlessly into another accent like Australian without it being a caricature or cliche version of the voice.
Honestly, Eddie is just one of the best actors I've ever came across. He's so down to earth with his characters and really brings them to life. You go Eddie.
I’m so very glad to hear him directly addressing the less than ideal fact of his being cast for the role of Lili as opposed to a trans actress; I think that he brought a lot of integrity to the role and the fact that he was cast probably did make the film more widely received than it might otherwise have been. But I am very grateful to him for acknowledging the sensitivity of the situation and recognizing his privilege within the system.
@TAYLOR BELL that's not the point. this is actually a widely known problem since a lot of film makers pick cis actors instead of trans actors because they "don't look trans enough," which is extremely transphobic and stupid. I personally love that he got cast because he portrayed the character so brilliantly - like all his characters - and since the whole transition, beginning with Lilly having a male body, is portrayed, it does make sense to cast a male actor. BUT it's very important to addresses the issue and I love that he did because, as I said, a lot of film makers are quite disrespectful about this, if not necessarily intentionally, and aren't giving real trans people the representation they deserve. have a nice day x
Don't see what's wrong with him portraying a Trans woman. Isn't the whole part of acting to pretend to be someone you're not? Would hate to be a Trans actor and only limited to play Trans characters, one should be judged on their abilities
@@gLeeksFF I don't think the problem is non trans people being cast as trans characters in general. The issue is casting cis actors because trans actors "don't look trans enough," which is an excuse some filmmakers have used in the past and that's just offensive. I totally agree that Eddie was the perfect choice, since the film obviously portrays the transition and so it made sense, also, I don't think many actors could've played this character as perfectly as he did 😊
is that what he meant when he said he didnt know if it were the right thing to do because i thought he meant it in a way of "im not 100% sure i agree with trans and all" so i came scouring through the comments to find out what he meant but by your comment does he mean he didnt know if it were right in terms of he is a man and they shouldve gotten szomeone who is part of the trans community to part take
I almost missed it and then realised by the end of the sentence what he was doing. Loved it. He also did it again later while imitating the Australian journalists.
He's being so honest about his career, that's why he has a good way in telling his story. He even admit his performance in Jupiter Ascending was terrible lol
First thing I saw him in ! I was like 12 or 13 and had a huge crush on him, and now he has all this success and is resurfacing and I'm like "that's Jack!!"
Jupiter Ascending was the first movie staring him I watched and I was fascinated by the way he played his role espacially the way he talked and the screaming and stuff, it was absolutely great in my opinion
Funny....I thought the same thing when I heard it....so subtle. Just after he mentioned Toni Collette. Sure seems to have worked with a lot of Aussies. Probably something has rubbed off. He might be a new Hollywood Superhero in the making ;).
I was thinking the same thing, I was like wait what that is going on here?! It’s the first time I’ve heard an impression that wasn’t shithouse... 🤷🏽♂️🥳
@@mrsfoss3368 0:17 - he's talking about working with Toni Colette and slips so subtly and easily into the accent. Imagine how well he'd do if he actually prepared for a movie with coaching and practice!
Eddie Redmayne did such an amazing job as Stephen Hawkings in The Theory of Everything. When I saw for the first time I loved and I cried. When I was watching the movie I didn’t who Stephen Hawkings was until I searched him. I also loved him as Newt Scamander in both Fantastic Beasts movies.
I love his honesty about his opinion on playing the Danish Girl, it would have been easier on him if he had said what he thinks the people would want to hear. Respect for that
The energy coming off this man is incredible, like, how do people keep up this energy! I can barely socialize with my own family without feeling knocked out
I'm kind of on a similar page with Eddie on the Danish Girl. On one hand, that movie was my first exposure to the idea of being trans, and helped me come out. On the other hand, years later, I recognize the importance of trans people telling their own stories. So it's a difficult situation. Glad he acknowledges it too.
Luna So you're trans? Because I would like to hear what a trans person thinks about my thoughts. Because what I thought when I heard about this debate is that you obviously want to make a movie as realistic as possible and back then they obviously didn't have hrt. So I thought it would make most sense to have a male actor in the lead who has all the features that are typically deemed as male or not? Sorry if I miss something about it. I'm not trying to be offensive, I'm just trying to understand
@@FleurDeCersier I agree. It makes sense for a cis man to play a cis man transition into a trans woman. It just wouldn't be as realistic. And Eddie is so nice and so respectful towards the community I really don't see how anyone could hate on him for such a wonderful performance.
Boo Boo the problem with casting cis men to play trans women and cis women to play trans men is that it encourages the belief that trans women are men and that trans men are women. (And when transphobic beliefs are encouraged it hurts trans people, whether that’s through unfair treatment, bigoted legislation, or outright violent attacks)
I have a question: does a cis person playing a trans person maybe depend a bit on research for the part? Because I personally don't think that cis people getting cast for trans roles is not usually a good result as it sometimes comes off as insensitive/reinforcing stereotypes, but I wonder if putting more research and time into the role is a bigger component. I'm not trans so I have no bearing on this subject and was curious and mean no disrespect.
Such a considerate interview, I love Eddie's thoughtfulness. I think that the decision to cast him in Danish Girl was right, there were many scenes were a biologically male body was portrayed, this sadly could not have been played by a trans (or cis, for that matter) woman. Not to mention his phenomenal acting.
I don't think it's so much that he regrets it, but rather that he truly acknowledges the complexity of the issue of him as a cis man playing a trans woman contrasted with his own personal journey.
I think he regrets it because he recognized the problem with casting cis men to play trans women and cis women to play trans men is that it encourages the belief that trans women are men and that trans men are women. (And when transphobic beliefs are encouraged it hurts trans people, whether that’s through unfair treatment, bigoted legislation, or outright violent attacks)

my whole family has freckles except me :,D lmao
Check and check XDDD
'Thicc lips and freckles' lol
I'm halfway there then.
preacher only if ur white tho
Every one of these I’ve seen so far has been just rosy and positive.
Here, Eddie is honest, direct, retrospective, and introspective on the good and the bad of his acting experiences, the rights and wrongs, and the lessons he’s learned as an actor and as a person.
It’s refreshing.
13:57 IS THAT NEWT TALKING TO REMUS LUPIN!! MY TWO FAVORITE CHARACTERS TOGETHER YASSS!
Newt even called lupin professor
I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED THIS YAY
Have you ever seen My Week with Marilyn?
You get Newt and Hermione kissing.
TH ANK YOU

Eddie Redmayne is such a quiet yet excitable character and I love seeing him talk
Eddie Redmayne is one of the most hard-working actors I've ever seen.
Love how he's so expressive and childish. So adorable. And a great actor. He broke my heart in The Danish Girl.
It's rare to encounter someone who can slip so effortlessly into another accent like Australian without it being a caricature or cliche version of the voice.
Honestly, Eddie is just one of the best actors I've ever came across. He's so down to earth with his characters and really brings them to life. You go Eddie.
I first remember seeing him in My Week With Marilyn. I wish he could of talked a little about that. I was amazing. Very underrated.
EmEliza You were amazing!
Haha whoops my bad. I meant it was amazing.
* could have
That was my first film where I saw him too (well actually Elizabeth the Golden Age but I didn’t really register him).
I demand a Benedict Cumberbatch breaks down his most iconic characters! Go get him!
Yes
Yaasss
Wait I love this comment
Yes, and i also demand Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch to appear in a movie together
"go get him" lmaoooo
I have such a big crush on Eddie!

Aren't we all
same
Honestly, don't we all?
You definitely forgot him as Jack in Pillars of the Earth, the very first role I’ve seen him in and I’m still blown away. That whole cast was amazing
I totally agree that Eddie was the perfect choice, since the film obviously portrays the transition and so it made sense, also, I don't think many actors could've played this character as perfectly as he did 😊
is that what he meant when he said he didnt know if it were the right thing to do because i thought he meant it in a way of "im not 100% sure i agree with trans and all" so i came scouring through the comments to find out what he meant but by your comment does he mean he didnt know if it were right in terms of he is a man and they shouldve gotten szomeone who is part of the trans community to part take
Does that mean that only cis actors/actresses can play cis characters? Trans actors have to wait til there’s a trans role?
*“The Theory of Everything” and “The Danish Girl”, so good!! I obviously cried while watching both movies*
Did anyone notice his subtle transition into an Australian accent when imitating Toni Collette? Nice.
Wasn't it amazing? He nailed it :)
I almost missed it and then realised by the end of the sentence what he was doing. Loved it. He also did it again later while imitating the Australian journalists.
As an Australian his Australian accent was awesome 😎!!!
And when he mimicked the Aussie journalist too! So seamless!
As an Australian and as someone who is a fan of Toni Collette I must say it was very good
It's been so long, and "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" still gets me every time
I love that he looks like an adorable school boy talking about his favourite subject! ❤️
I love how he likes to tell a story. Such a charming man. Could listen to him all day ☺️
He's being so honest about his career, that's why he has a good way in telling his story. He even admit his performance in Jupiter Ascending was terrible lol
Very underrated preformence in Pillars of Earth watch it if you didn't its epic.
First thing I ever noticed him in - perfect casting for Jack imo and he delivered such a great performance!
I was waiting for that the whooole time. He's amazing there and it's what made me have a crush on him
First thing I saw him in ! I was like 12 or 13 and had a huge crush on him, and now he has all this success and is resurfacing and I'm like "that's Jack!!"
He was my favorite character on that show
Yes! I've seen it!! It was really good n he was awsm too along w sam claflin
Jupiter Ascending was the first movie staring him I watched and I was fascinated by the way he played his role espacially the way he talked and the screaming and stuff, it was absolutely great in my opinion
Eddie Redmayne may think he’s a marmite actor but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like him
WELL I AM PROUD TO INTRODUCE MY SELF AS I DO NOT LIKE HIM AS AN ACTOR NOR MY MEET WITH HIM SINCE HE BECAME AN ACTOR....
@@erzsebetnilsson580 Congrats!
@@erzsebetnilsson580 Okay......?
Theory of everything was perfect and I can’t believe he wouldn’t have got it! Only person who could pull it off.
Okay but did he just casually and spontaneously do one of the best Australian accents I've heard a non-Australian do???
Funny....I thought the same thing when I heard it....so subtle. Just after he mentioned Toni Collette. Sure seems to have worked with a lot of Aussies. Probably something has rubbed off. He might be a new Hollywood Superhero in the making ;).
I was thinking the same thing, I was like wait what that is going on here?! It’s the first time I’ve heard an impression that wasn’t shithouse... 🤷🏽♂️🥳
He's the only one I've heard actually do it right, subtle and natural, and not try to sound like a bogan or Crocodile Dundee!!
Do u have a time stamp anyone pls? I'm Aussie and want to test it out!!
He's so talented and so down to earth
I love his honesty about his opinion on playing the Danish Girl, it would have been easier on him if he had said what he thinks the people would want to hear. Respect for that
He's so adorable
Was really hoping he would discuss My Week with Marilyn. It was where I first discovered him and became a huge fan.
can we talk about Eddie's bomb micro-impressions throughout?
Whoever cast you in The Pillars of the earth , deserves an award. Brilliant adaptability to everything you do.❤️
agree... it was here I was introduce to him first time. I love his role...

Well Brendon is amazing so i think there are many PatD fans wich is great :)
The energy coming off this man is incredible, like, how do people keep up this energy! I can barely socialize with my own family without feeling knocked out
how seamless is his australian accent, he does it twice and it feels so natural that you dont even notice it
"Until a piano was falling on my head and I was like WHAT THE FUC-"
Femme Funtime so then what do you think if they casted a cis woman instead of Eddie Redmayne?
Such a considerate interview, I love Eddie's thoughtfulness. I think that the decision to cast him in Danish Girl was right, there were many scenes were a biologically male body was portrayed, this sadly could not have been played by a trans (or cis, for that matter) woman. Not to mention his phenomenal acting.
He loves swearing and I am slightly bummed that he regrets the role in Danish Girl, his performance was amazing
agreed, its my favourite role that he’s done he was outstanding
I don't think it's so much that he regrets it, but rather that he truly acknowledges the complexity of the issue of him as a cis man playing a trans woman contrasted with his own personal journey.
I think he regrets it because he recognized the problem with casting cis men to play trans women and cis women to play trans men is that it encourages the belief that trans women are men and that trans men are women. (And when transphobic beliefs are encouraged it hurts trans people, whether that’s through unfair treatment, bigoted legislation, or outright violent attacks)
Eddie Redmayne and Emilia Clarke are two of the most adorable people ever!

All I can think is, how come this much of cuteness is possible? 😭❤️
"most bonkers thing I've ever seen" is the most British way to say it was bad... love him! lol!
I fell in love with Eddie Redmayne in Danish Girl, he did so well in that movie, I would recommend it to all my friends when discussing memorable films. Him becoming Newt, was seriously God Send.

I was never aware of the larynx backstory for his character in Jupiter Ascending....? Makes that voice make a lot more sense.
Just saw Crimes of Grindelwald and he did such an amazing job
‘I still haven’t reconciled if it was the right thing to do’ it’s hard for people to admit that so it’s lovely to see someone famous say that while being filmed.
He is such a versatile actor.i just love the way he plays his characters 🥰🥰
First time I saw him in a role was sometime 2010 -ish in the mini series "Pillars of the Earth" and became quite the fan but didn't check up more on him and didn't hear anything either. Was really surprised when he popped up in Les Mis a few years later but super awesome he's come so far in his career.
The way he slips into that Australian accent so easily has me shook
such a precious soul - i never could get through one of these "breaking down iconic characters" videos but eddie is just so passionate about what he does that it's completely entrancing
Honestly he did very good in The Danish Girl, he is honestly a talented actor!
This man was utterly brilliant in “The Trial of the Chicago 7”. Nailed the accent as well!
