Greetings! I carried a revolver (S&W model 10) for years as an LEO and my agency issued the Safariland Comp II's. I have used the HKS as well both on duty and in competition but always did find the Safariland easier to use and faster. I still am a "revolver guy" but I haven't been able to carry a revolver since 1999 on duty. All auto pistols now. Thanks for doing this video. I just got rid of my two 45 ACP's and bought two Ruger revolvers. Revolvers have no safety, always ready to fire - and an auto-loader jam can get you killed.
Just bought a Safariland Speedloader for my Model 66. My local gun shop recommended it over the HKS. Looks like they know what they are talking about. Thanks for the very helpful video.
There is an additional significant advantage I have found to the Safariland loader as well, over the HKS. The Safariland loaders are MUCH more SECURE as far as carrying loose in either a pocket or purse or fanny pack, etc. Why? I have found the HKS loaders to prematurely eject the rounds, causing them to all fall out because it's quite easy to nudge or bump the knob on the HKS loader. The Safariland model however, because of it's design where you actually push on the body has a trigger system that is not exposed at all. It's hidden way up underneath on the loader itself and is surrounded by the actual rounds it is carrying. So while the Safarilands can cost a little more, there is no comparison in design or quality as far as I'm concerned. The only reason I haven't thrown away my HKS, is because I'm a bit of a hoarder. But they are junk compared to the Safarilands which are not only much faster, better built, and as I say are MUCH more secure. They do NOT prematurely unload and only release when you deliberately intend them to.
Just like spare mags you shouldn’t be carrying a speed loader “ loose” they make those pouches for it and in those cases the HKS is superior cause the high knob makes it easier to pull from the pouch.

Your technique is the way to do it. My left hand and arm has very limited mobility so I have to do what I do. However, for anyone with two normal hands, your suggestion is preferred. Thanks for sharing that with folks!
The HKS works well if once you twist to release, just let go of it completely. If the revolver is facing straight down, the rounds drop in and when you close the cylinder the speedloader drops away. I don't have the safariland to compare with and the safariland might be better, but with a little technique practice the hks is pretty darn fast.
You speak truth. I’ve had 4 hks’s for a week and after a little practice I learned that if you have the revolver facing down vertically they drop right in. I don’t know why all these grown men are having such a hard time simply twisting and releasing. But yes. They work excellently and they are very affordable. I’m buying more.

I've used nearly every brand produced, even ones I can't remember their name and that you may never have heard of. Strange how people criticize what's proven to be best. Sorry, still getting used to the new TH-cam app. Ditto what akin said below regarding the #586 HKS Speedloaders as I use them in my 686 and no wiggle is needed. I use the 10A in my 66 and model10 without issues. Great video and I am a NH native who now lives in PA, hence the name!! Great video!

This is a very useful video for me to see. I have ordered two of the Safariland and two of the HKS for my GP100 of the proper models and I will try both and see how it goes. It is good to have options.

Both are worth the money. I use the HKS more just because I have the belt carrier used more in the field. The other one I use at the range more for speed.
Thanks for your review - easy to understand, especially with the care you took to get a good camera angle. I have a S&W 681 for casual shooting but of course a reload could be handy. You have sold me on the Safariland, they are $9 at Midway.

Ok, I bought me 2 of the Safariland comp 2. I really like them, as far as putting in the bullets. I just put the bullets in, put my left hand over the bullets. Then I bring my left hand around where the bullets face down and push the knob down and turn the knob to right to lock the in. Done, easy to do. Love them.
It is very nice to see that somebody finally made a speedloader that doesn't require you to awkwardly turn a tight, teensy knob-- on top of a cylinder that _also_ spins. Completely counter-intuitive. _Never_ liked the HKS speedloaders. Got a couple of used COMP 1's today and dang, unless these break I'm not going back.
I've used Safariland Comp speed loaders since the 80s. I've tried HKS loaders for my K and J frame revolvers and always go back to Safariland for the same reasons.

To reduce or even eliminate that sticking shells in the knob type speedloader, lightly oil the rim of the ammo or periodically scrub with metal polish. They slide effortlessly.
Thank you for the tip. I think that would apply for most situations specifically at the range. However, many people carry their speed loader in a pocket. This means that lightly oiled rim is likely to collect lint and dust particles. That being said, I’m going to give your suggestion a try when I go to the range this weekend. I have a 686 and the proper HKS loaders. If you transfer left to right from a 2 handed grip, release the cylinder with the right thump, open with the left fingers and grab the reloader by the release knob (not the speedloader cylinder) by the right hand, close the 686 cylinder with the left thumb, and transfer to a 2 handed left grip it would go faster. As for the speedloaders themselves, the HKS will never release prematurely in a pressure combat situation as you can't turn the knob unless the rounds are partially in the cylinder. I've seen the Safariland style pressed prior to insertion by novices.

I use both, HKS feels more durable and "positive", the Safariland is maybe a bit quicker if you're trying to shave tenths of a second off your times.......main advantage is I can use Safariland speedloaders with my off hand, HKS requires switching hands. Overall 2x2x2 pouches are my favorite for just overall carry and training. Speedloaders have gotten fumbly or sticky on me too many times.
@@johnryan296 a usually leather pouch which holds 6 cartridges in three pairs, allowing you to grab two at a time for rather quick reloads. (IE, reload two cartridges in the time it takes to reload one individually.)

Safariland all day over any other loader. I have had 2 fail over the years (many years) but the failure involves them failing to even grab the rounds and lock in place. These were high mileage loaders though. Never had a failure of a loaded loader or an accidental dump as I’ve had with others.
Guns, Gear & On Target Training, LLC if you really like those I would try the speed bees they are superior to the Safari Land jet loaders or even this far away and compensation 3 the only problem I have with the jet loaders over a speed loader is that in a field they can prematurely eject the rounds so when you go for your loader you won't have any there but it all pertains to practice a newer person can definitely use a jet loader quicker but a competition shooter will actually take a speed loader over jet loader because of the pre mature release
You're using the wrong HKS. You should use the HKS 586. That said the Safariland is faster for those who don't practice. HKS may spin the cylinder when twisting. Simply holding the cylinder prevents that problem. I have both and find no difference if I hold the cylinder. The HKS 10 I have is for my Dan Wesson revolver model 15.
Randomly found this video. One thing thing may increase your speed is to keep the speed loaders to the right side of your belt buckle. your much more proficient (and faast) with what your doing than than 80% of most people I have see.
Very nice review with excellent real world testing with pros and cons. I've been looking for a couple of speed loaders for my S&W M36. I think I'll look for the Safariland.

Yes, the Safariland is much quicker. The thing I don't like about the HKS is you have to hold the cylinder in place or the knob will turn the cylinder. You then have to let go of the cylinder to close the cylinder. Not much time but a split second can make a difference. With the Safariland - shoot until empty, simultaneously engage the cylinder release with your right thumb while using your left hand to swing the cylinder out, simultaneously grab the gun with your left hand with it pointing up and eject the spent shells with your thumb WHILE using your right hand to grab the Safariland speedloader, then bring the gun and the speed loader together.
It would help if you had the correct sized HKS speed loaders for you 686 which takes the 586-A model loaders. The 10-A loaders are for K-frames like the Model 10, 15, 19 etc. The 586-A loaders are for L-frames the the 686.
@@roteroktober360 because there are different sizes of revolvers… There are small frame .357 revolvers, medium frame .357 revolvers, Large frame .357 revolvers and even Extra large .357 revolvers. There are 5 shot revolvers, 6 shot revolvers, 7 shot revolvers, 8, 9 and 10 shot revolvers. There are .32 calibre revolvers, 9mm revolvers, .38 longs, shorts, specials, .44s, .45s, .500s and so on… Point is, there are a lot of different sizes and calibers of revolvers.
Would be great to have replacable cylinders without weakening the design, that could work like magazines. One could be even faster than with a speed loader, just swing out, it falls out and put a fresh one in without fiddling with emptying the old cylinder and matching the new rounds with openings.
Conceptually, it is ‘possible”, but in practice would not work for a duty/defence firearm. Revolver cylinders rely on a ratchet system which would be susceptible to dents and damage if speedily discarded like a magazine after use. A simplified version of this concept is full Moon clips, where all the cartridges are connected and you simply drop them all into the cylinder at once. Fact is, technologically, revolvers are at their peak of practical design.
It’s not hard to use just requires training for the memory. However unlike Vash’s gun which opens like the old school schofield revolvers with a top break most modern revolvers run a side drop cylinder. Now if someone could figure out how to make a modern top break revolver that could take .357 it would eliminate the need for a lefty to train extra hard like I do
You really need to grab a speed loader pouch. That said I did try Safariland loaders and like them but I already have a cigar box full of HKS for my .38 special k frames. When I pick up my next revolver (S&W 44 mag) I'll probably go with Safariland for it.
While I agree the Safariland is better and faster than the HKS, it should be noted you are using the wrong size HKS. The HKS Model 10 is for the S&W K frame (Model 10, 14, 19, etc) the 686 is an L-Frame, the HKS Model 586 is the correct size for your revolver.
I tried two different J-R4C COMP II for my Security Six and neither will retain the damn cartridges. Thank goodness for Amazon return policy. will stick with the reliable and always working HKS.
Wishse, you mention you use the #10 HKS speedloader for your 686. The HKS #10 is better suited to the K frame S&W models, (Like the Model 10 38 special). HKS makes a #586 speedloader sized better for the L frame 686. Cylinder hole spacing is just a bit wider and inserts much smoother. I have used the #10 HKS in my 686, but it is not as fast or smooth. BTW I prefer the Safariland Comp II's also, for the same reasons you state.
If you can ever find them, you should also try the SL Variant speedloaders. Similar to Safarilands, but they are spring loaded so rounds shoot straight into the cylinder instead of having to rely on gravity to drop rounds.

I wish you would understand that there's a difference between the HK speedloader in the Safariland jet loaders that is why there's so much difference in the lovers the HK is considered a speed loader which requires you to twist to get the rounds out the jet loaders or just a single push button and personally I like the Safariland comp 3 if you go with jet loaders
The way you empty the cylinder is not only slowing you down, but it is harmful to the gun. you should. Flinging the cylinder open like that is going to bend the crane causing cylinder misalignment. Also you are moving more than you need to. You should cup the cylinder in your left hand as you work the release in your right.
I just bought 2 and a dual belt pouch for my dads .357 off amazon for 10$ a pop. At that price why not? It triples the reload speed for petes sake! haha thanks for the review.
After watching this vid I got myself a couple of Safariland Speedloaders for my Ruger Security Six. I was extremely disappointed. 1) I can't get the speedloaders around the grips. No Hogue grips or anything fancy, just the original, wooden grips. 2) The speedloaders are extremely difficult to load. Turning them around and pressing them on a hard surface as it says in the manual isn't that easy. 3) The speedloaders are made of very cheap plastic. I doubt that they last long. Lesson learned: I will have to go on with my HKS speedloaders, although I'm not happy with them at all. Why does the lock turn clockwise? If it turned anticlockwise I wouldn't tend to lock the cylinder when using them.
Some handguns are better using HKS, some models one has no choice. Comp I and IIs are the best. I've used every speed loader made. Most of the problems with HKS are the old models.

I don't have to jiggle my HKS speedloaders with my 6 shot GP 100. Cartridges fall straight in the cylinder. Too easy.
Yes, they are available form Amazon. They really work far better than the HKS. Give them a try!
Guns, Gear & On Target Training, LLC if you really like those I would try the speed bees they are superior to the Safari Land jet loaders or even this far away and compensation 3 the only problem I have with the jet loaders over a speed loader is that in a field they can prematurely eject the rounds so when you go for your loader you won't have any there but it all pertains to practice a newer person can definitely use a jet loader quicker but a competition shooter will actually take a speed loader over jet loader because of the pre mature release
You're using the wrong HKS. You should use the HKS 586. That said the Safariland is faster for those who don't practice. HKS may spin the cylinder when twisting. Simply holding the cylinder prevents that problem.
I have both and find no difference if I hold the cylinder.
The HKS 10 I have is for my Dan Wesson revolver model 15.
Randomly found this video. One thing thing may increase your speed is to keep the speed loaders to the right side of your belt buckle.
your much more proficient (and faast) with what your doing than than 80% of most people I have see.

I totally agree. I switched to the comp two for my GP 100. They are faster and easier than the HSK.

Yes, the Safariland is much quicker. The thing I don't like about the HKS is you have to hold the cylinder in place or the knob will turn the cylinder. You then have to let go of the cylinder to close the cylinder. Not much time but a split second can make a difference. With the Safariland - shoot until empty, simultaneously engage the cylinder release with your right thumb while using your left hand to swing the cylinder out, simultaneously grab the gun with your left hand with it pointing up and eject the spent shells with your thumb WHILE using your right hand to grab the Safariland speedloader, then bring the gun and the speed loader together.

It would help if you had the correct sized HKS speed loaders for you 686 which takes the 586-A model loaders. The 10-A loaders are for K-frames like the Model 10, 15, 19 etc. The 586-A loaders are for L-frames the the 686.

There are small frame .357 revolvers, medium frame .357 revolvers, Large frame .357 revolvers and even Extra large .357 revolvers.
There are 5 shot revolvers, 6 shot revolvers, 7 shot revolvers, 8, 9 and 10 shot revolvers.
There are .32 calibre revolvers, 9mm revolvers, .38 longs, shorts, specials, .44s, .45s, .500s and so on…
Point is, there are a lot of different sizes and calibers of revolvers.

I have not, but will try to locate a few.
Would be great to have replacable cylinders without weakening the design, that could work like magazines. One could be even faster than with a speed loader, just swing out, it falls out and put a fresh one in without fiddling with emptying the old cylinder and matching the new rounds with openings.
Conceptually, it is ‘possible”, but in practice would not work for a duty/defence firearm.
Revolver cylinders rely on a ratchet system which would be susceptible to dents and damage if speedily discarded like a magazine after use.
A simplified version of this concept is full Moon clips, where all the cartridges are connected and you simply drop them all into the cylinder at once.
Fact is, technologically, revolvers are at their peak of practical design.

It’s not hard to use just requires training for the memory. However unlike Vash’s gun which opens like the old school schofield revolvers with a top break most modern revolvers run a side drop cylinder. Now if someone could figure out how to make a modern top break revolver that could take .357 it would eliminate the need for a lefty to train extra hard like I do
You really need to grab a speed loader pouch. That said I did try Safariland loaders and like them but I already have a cigar box full of HKS for my .38 special k frames. When I pick up my next revolver (S&W 44 mag) I'll probably go with Safariland for it.
At 68 years young I too have a bit of arthritis in my left hand. I do like the Safari-land speed-loaders better than the HKS!!!!!!
While I agree the Safariland is better and faster than the HKS, it should be noted you are using the wrong size HKS. The HKS Model 10 is for the S&W K frame (Model 10, 14, 19, etc) the 686 is an L-Frame, the HKS Model 586 is the correct size for your revolver.

I tried two different J-R4C COMP II for my Security Six and neither will retain the damn cartridges. Thank goodness for Amazon return policy. will stick with the reliable and always working HKS.

Fyi, the HKS 10 is designed for K frame S&W while the HKS 586A is designed for L frame S&W such as your 686/GP100.
Still I like the Safariland better.
Wishse, you mention you use the #10 HKS speedloader for your 686. The HKS #10 is better suited to the K frame S&W models, (Like the Model 10 38 special). HKS makes a #586 speedloader sized better for the L frame 686. Cylinder hole spacing is just a bit wider and inserts much smoother. I have used the #10 HKS in my 686, but it is not as fast or smooth. BTW I prefer the Safariland Comp II's also, for the same reasons you state.

If you can ever find them, you should also try the SL Variant speedloaders. Similar to Safarilands, but they are spring loaded so rounds shoot straight into the cylinder instead of having to rely on gravity to drop rounds.

99% of your problem with the hks is bad form and using the wrong size, but the safariland comp 3 is a better product

Also I have a little different technique: I hold the gun with the left hand and eject with the left thumb. The speed loader stays on my right side.
I wish you would understand that there's a difference between the HK speedloader in the Safariland jet loaders that is why there's so much difference in the lovers the HK is considered a speed loader which requires you to twist to get the rounds out the jet loaders or just a single push button and personally I like the Safariland comp 3 if you go with jet loaders

The ammo shortage will continue to be a problem for at least 2 more years. And most people cannot afford $1 per round or more.

The way you empty the cylinder is not only slowing you down, but it is harmful to the gun. you should. Flinging the cylinder open like that is going to bend the crane causing cylinder misalignment. Also you are moving more than you need to. You should cup the cylinder in your left hand as you work the release in your right.

I just bought 2 and a dual belt pouch for my dads .357 off amazon for 10$ a pop. At that price why not? It triples the reload speed for petes sake! haha thanks for the review.
After watching this vid I got myself a couple of Safariland Speedloaders for my Ruger Security Six. I was extremely disappointed. 1) I can't get the speedloaders around the grips. No Hogue grips or anything fancy, just the original, wooden grips. 2) The speedloaders are extremely difficult to load. Turning them around and pressing them on a hard surface as it says in the manual isn't that easy. 3) The speedloaders are made of very cheap plastic. I doubt that they last long.
Lesson learned: I will have to go on with my HKS speedloaders, although I'm not happy with them at all. Why does the lock turn clockwise? If it turned anticlockwise I wouldn't tend to lock the cylinder when using them.
Some handguns are better using HKS, some models one has no choice. Comp I and IIs are the best. I've used every speed loader made. Most of the problems with HKS are the old models.
