Protos 380 Evo V2 - YGE Upgrade, and back to RotorTech

  • Got my new YGE 65LVT in the mail and threw it into the Protos. Running the BEC at 8.4V strong with no issues at all. Glad to finally have the BEC woes behind me. I also decided, while trying a new ESC brand, I'd also try the internal governor - out of curiosity, and to see if it exhibited the same symptoms as the Brain governor with overshoots after unloading the rotor. It does not. Honestly, totally happy with how the gov is performing so I probably will leave it in use for the foreseeable future. I am using the ESC in gov store mode, and once it was calibrated I set my throttle curves to match the RPMs I was running before. Presently, those RPMs are 2600, 2800, and 3100.
    I also finally got a couple of sets of the RotorTech 386mm main blades. Just from the sound of the heli you can tell how they are much more efficient and stall much later (which is why they are quieter), and you can tell the heli feels happier with the RotorTechs than with the Switch or ALIGN 380s. While the ALIGN 380 are no doubt an excellent value, the RotorTechs I can honestly say are worth the extra money if you want to squeeze a bit more efficiency out of your heli.
    I am pondering switching back to the regular (Red) head dampeners. For my flying style at lower RPMs, I feel like the head is almost too rigid when combining the POM dampers with the much more rigid metal grips. It comes down to personal preference really. If you fly at very high RPMs you will probably like them very much, but the way I fly I think I prefer the less rigid traditional rubber dampers on this helicopter, at least when used in conjunction with the metal blade grips.
    P.S. My mic was having issues while recording the talking bits, so please try to ignore the annoying buzz you sometimes hear. Yes I know it's hard... just please try :)

    I noticed you have the metal main grips on your 380evo. What’s the reason. I’m gonna get one soon! I’m gonna go with the 20t pinion 2,800-3,200 is my HS aim. Swinging ultimate 385’s. Scorpion 3020-1000 with a tribunus 80. Torq servos all around

      I ended up switching back to the plastic grips eventually. The metal ones are fine, but the grip arms bend. I had crashes with the metal grips where the grip arms bent but not enough to be obvious, causing tracking to be off and odd vibration until I figured it out. Plastic grips are just fine, don't bother with the metal ones. I have never broken a plastic blade grip, out of dozens of crashes.
      The exception to that is the metal tail grips. Definitely worth the investment there.

    Hey. Awesome stuff. Nice to ser a fellow opentx'er. Never seen that battery widget. Could you tell med what it is? Only seen the frsky lipo monitor one.

      you can find it here. github.com/IRTrail/Horus-Widgets
      it's abandonware, but surprisingly compatibility hasn't broken with newer OpenTX releases, at least not yet.

    Hey brotha, thinking of switching over to FRSKY from Spectrum but i do not well with change. lol. What are the challenges that I will face. I fly all IKON/Brain as my FBL with HW ESC's

      As with any new system there will be a learning curve. Find my Ethos Heli Setup Guide on HeliFreak in the FrSky section, should make the process a lot easier for ya.

    So the servo wires you had to extend were not an issue? That thing is cranking as it should now, heck yes! Got my XL 550 in the air today, what a badass Heli it is. Enjoy, that’s a sweet flying bird now!! Woohoo!

    • @BladeScraper
      @BladeScraper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the wires were not the issue. I never thought it was. I think just the extra inductance from the longer wires was enough to push the Tribunus over the edge. They are "extended" but in reality they are merely now the length they are out of the package - I had shortened them for use on my previous 380s, and so I had to extend them back to the original length for this heli.
      Enjoy the 550 as well. I just actually converted my 550 back to a 520.
