Anthony Stewart, around the world in a open boat.

  • This is the journey of Anthony Stewart who sailed around the world in a 19ft open boat.
To put this adventure into context, Mobile phones, Digital TV, HD Video had yet to be invented. The video filmed on board was video tape and the quality of image would not match the cheapest mobile phone today. Many of the crew who made this film have passed away and the film itself was in danger of being lost forever as it has never been broadcast and video tape has a short lifespan.
I was one of the cameramen on this film and fitted the gear onto Anthony Stewart's yacht so he could film alone at sea. There was virtually zero technology on board and no communication with the outside world.
Last I heard of Antony Stewart he was working for the Yacht Company Robertson & Caine in Cape Town, South Africa.

I knew Ant, seems like a lifetime ago. Got to know him during a Laser regatta at Point Yacht Club in Durban in the mid/late 80's. One day while we were all drifting around in no wind, waiting for the start, Ant shows up on an L26, sailing through the fleet of Lasers, blasting Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" from a boombox, like that scene from "Apocalypse Now". Good memories!

That is one tough cookie. True adventuring and plugging on, you don’t get those memories and spiritual growth with plug n play credit card hopping electronic refrigerated social media and movies on board, autopilot “ cursing “ . Unqualified respect, sir

Ant moved to the US if remember correctly. He setup a company delivering yachts built in Cape Town to the rest of the world.
I will check on my Facebook I think he’s one of the “friends” I have who never post.
To me this was one of the most remarkable sailing feats ever. His grit and tenacity is second to none. I still regard him as a hero.

Absolutely amazing. No sunburn, no weight loss, open boat,. you usually see sailors with rough skin and complection. He must have had some wonderful skin products . That boat is amazing it carried enough water and food for 56 days! So much to understand

Anthony Stewart was/is a very good sailor and when he was wrecked on surf island only had 2 weeks of medication for a auto immune disease and then he would die...he recorded a fairwell message which we did not include in the doccy and he had lost around 35kg...many things are not visible in the film as HD had not yet been invented.

Small yachts are far more oceanworthy than large ships.
The ships are viciously stressed by sitting on top of big waves, with their ends hanging, or bow and stern on top with the middle hanging.
They can't lift their bows fast enough to ride up and over a big wave, and if they drop bow after cresting one, then they can dive into the two hundred ft face of the next, suddenly experiencing hundreds of psi of pressure on Hull and decks.
Plus the steel they are made of is very poor strength to weight, and welds fatigue and corrode, giving them a working service life of less than a few decades.
Small yachts respond fast and ride up and down over waves without drama.
This is far safer than a cruise liner.
The biggest issue he had to face was being singlehanded with the sleep deprivation.
Probably the real cause of gut and skin infection issues he faced.

    • @JackTheRivalPS3
      @JackTheRivalPS3 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Not an expert but, when the boat is so small and most of the weight will be in the cast iron keel he had it would top back over, also cause its an open bout with hatches the air will be trapped inside giving boilency.

This is one of the reasons I do not subscribe to any of the modern sailing channels on You Tube. With modern navigation and a vast array of electronic charts and more electronics there is no real adventure. When I was at sea i was still using paper charts with Capt Cook as notation/author and we had one position fix every hour or so via a new thing called sat nav. It was real sailing by the seat of your pants. Must admit I havent heard of Anthony Stewart until now. The guy is a legend and they need to do a proper movie about him.
