That tickled me because I saw one last week at some traffic lights. It's lights and parking sensors were going crazy, the guy was sat inside like it was just a normal thing for parking sensors to be beeping and the lights to be in disco mode when stationary in traffic 😅

Underrated SUV: SQ7 - the new one with the petrol V8 that is. Never gets talked about, (probably because most people still think it has a diesel), 507 hp, sounds better than the RSQ8 and looks arguably better than most "Coupe" SUVs. Great option, if you want an understated powerful daily, that doesnt scream "look at me and how much money i make".

    • @magnustan841
      @magnustan841 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It think it should have the RS4 V6, but I’ll give you that. Diesel would have been a good choice, because it’s a big heavy thing, but it’s Audi, part of the VW group and that Diesel SQ7 came around the time of Dieselgate, so when you put it all together, you can see why they went for petrol.

    • @jeremybaker8173

Re the Stelvio Quadrifoglio 'Infotainment/Tech' doesn't worry me at all Sam. As long as the stereo has a great sound (they all do nowadays), I couldn't give a damn about all the other crap. Just more to go wrong anyway. You place a lot of weight on something that no one actually needs. Waze on your phone works very well.
The Levante is pug ugly compared to the Stelvio.
Slightly disagree with the first of the current SUV trend.....ML Mercedes-Benz- back in 98 this set a new standard in comfortable 4x4's....agreed 2 years later the X5 went one step further in sportiness as it didn't have a separate chassis, but it was shit off road and didn't have a low ration transfer box. So for those towing horseboxes or boats X5's didn't cut the mustard. They wouldn't go anywhere in the snow either (unlike the ML).
The original ML is excellent off-road/snow by the way.
I think the discussion about 'fruity cars' is actually pointless as in this country you are stuck in the same queue of traffic as the SUV's you list as boring. No one buys SUV's to use on track days do they?
Wouldn't touch a Land Rover product despite your collective love of RR Sport.....don't want to get to know the recovery drivers thank you......or the LR dealer invoices.

All, literally all, my mates have things like Sportage, Qashqai, XTrail, Ateca, Tuscan, CX3 some of which are just not that big. And none of them give a toss how good they are to drive and they just buy them cause its what people do. FYI I have two kids and a dog, So I just stick to a wagon, Mazda 6 at the moment

  • @bispal

I'm sorry but 2 tonne cars, 2m wide struggling to park in Waitrose and clogging up South London are just utterly pointless. These cars are too big for UK roads. People by Range Rovers as they can't think of anything else to buy and have no imagination. Real landed gentry almost always drive Subaru's and Volvo's not gin palaces on wheels for the nouveau riche. You don't need something this big for 2 adults and 2 kids, a 3 series touring or Golf are probably better. The idea that a LWB RR is a great choice for a family is preposterous, how on earth would you park it anywhere, it would be a total nuisance and a real hassle. Its all status driven (people who want to be footballers or appear to be rich). People should at least be trying to save the planet they should be buying smaller, more compact less polluting cars made with fewer materials. A 15 year old Subaru Forester is narrower than a new VW Polo and weighs less than a Lotus Emira, how far things have gone wrong.

I think the boom with crossovers started with middle income earners looking to own a car that gave them more status. Before crossovers, mid to large SUVs such as the X3, Q5 or Range Rover were relatively unattainable for most people. Then car makers started launching good looking small SUVs that were often the same size as older x3's and everyone wanted that status vehicle. I think that's where it started. For a time a car like a modern Tiguan was a big car for a good price. Personally I think SUVs look good on the driveway and families like to look like they are doing well don't they? The funny thing is they have absolutely no boot space and you'd be better off in a Saloon car but try telling young families that.

The DBX might not be the best car but has definitely saved Aston Martin. Autocar just released an article today about how the DBX has made up 50% of Aston sales in 2021 so far. The company have doubled their sales this year purely down to the DBX. I think it is just that as a large number of them are being bought outside Europe it looks to us like they are not selling many.

He hates McLaren because even though the car is great. It’s isn’t reliable.
Range Rover suffers from the same issue with over 30% of the cars needing to back to dealership for reliability and electric issues. X5/X7 Q7/Q8 and even the Merc equivalents offer a more reliable car with same capability.
Why is Range Rover that has problems ok but a super car then not?

Avoid the RRS SVR, Tony’s right, if you get the supercharged or autobiography in the Sport, it’s the same 99.9% of the time and a lot more comfortable. When you get out of a sport and get into the big daddy you notice the giant step up. If you want nimbleness in an SUV you buy a Macan. The PDK is second to none.

How comes Andrew isn't interested in Estates. RS6 and E63 has all the performance, occupancy and versatility (off road manors aside) of any SUV and dynamism in a different universe. I always thought that a car guy with 2 children would truly just buy an M3; because the kids and Mrs need to flex to car life, not the other way round. If we are talking people that can afford a daily (SUV) and a weekend weapon this conversation makes more sense.

I think Aston doomed themselves the second they put Mercedes Engines in their cars. The biggest reason to buy an Aston and put up with poor infotainment, poor build quality and poor driving dynamics was to get those engines in your life. They put far too much stock into their looks and this is coming from the biggest Aston Martin fan, but I could care less about any of the new Aston’s.

I think SUVs' popularity, particularly crossovers (Qashqai, X1, Sportage, Tiguan, etc), could also be because beginner drivers feel more confident and comfortable sat up high and once you have that, it's difficult to let go of it. Then they start a family and realise SUVs' and crossover's versatility and ease at which you can load stuff into them. So for the remainder of their lives, they keep coming back to them. Also, because car prices have risen in recent years, some can no longer afford multiple cars for different purposes, they need a jack of all trades and SUVs fit the bill. So you can see why their market share is so big nowadays.
The thing I struggle to understand is, why there is an ongoing uproar against manufacturers making SUVs amongst enthusiasts. "When is the SUV trend going to stop?", "These are pointless vehicles, "Please stop this SUV nonsense". Not every car on the road has to give hints of driving enjoyment and sportiness, as much as we would like them to be. Is it the Chris Harris effect? Is it the wagon craze? There's just something I'm not getting with regards to the SUV hate. It’s almost as if you can’t be a “petrol head” if you like SUVs. I don't love them with a passion, but I certainly don't hate them.

From best episode you’ve ever done last week to the worst. Really cannot abide by SUVs and their insecure drivers. By the way, was in the Range Rover dealership recently and it was full of travellers and permatanned Essex bods. That’s the types that drive them and the stigma they now have.

My Dad had 5 or 6 Range Rovers back in the 80s and 90s. However I’ve got a ‘16 BMW X5. 7 seats, best Nav, tow bar, based on rwd chassis so a good drive. BUT, the ‘Rangie’ just has something special about it.

Great Podcast as always, although nothing is better than the episode where Paul, Supercars of London, shows up an hour early. The banter between all three equates to my favorite episode of all time

I would look for a Cayenne tdi v8 as new as possible and low mileage. However in your case, I would keep the x3 and buy a gt3 or turbo s

I just don't understand the safety and space argument, SUVs are often more dangerous in things like the Moose Test and space wise they are usually smaller inside than a comparable estate

You guys are spending too much time in London. The Defender adds more off road capability and the intwrior is designed to clean up after off roading. That is why it isn't as good in the world of lux SUVs. If ballers modify them for the street that's their issue. Land Rover didn't design it that way.

Very good episode. Here usa jeep and now ford with new bronco taking over Outdoors and suv market. Also for cheap the f-phase is cool for money quite reliable and not to crazy here used. Theo huynida and Kia are on point with small suv lately.

Hi Sam, great podcast! I've noticed you have some STG keychains on the desk but they're not on the website for purchase? Will they be added to the website soon? Many thanks!

SUVs are 4/5 cars in one. Even if you have the money, some people can’t be arsed to run and maintain 3 cars to cater for each role. Personally, I’ve got just the regular X5 30d. Plenty fast enough

If I ran a large radio station I would be offering you two squillions to come and present the motoring show. It’s really good stuff.
