    What do you think?

    I'm right handed and my dominant eye is on the right. Interestingly thinking about it, my backhand is much more consistent than my forehand. I can reply better the shots that go left just because my right eye stays an inch ahead all through each shot. I gotta work this out. Thank you so much for the info!!

      Just to clarify, the main point of the video eye dominance won't be the problem. It's the only visual skill we can't change. If your forehand isn't consistent, there are other visual skills that could potentially (are highly likely to) be involved. The good news being you can train them.

    You are correct, sir.
    I wish I was taught to tran my visual system when I was a kid ( I'm doing some exercises now and I'm amazed to see how weak my eye muscles are ) !
    Besides, we don't use our legs nearly as much as we should !
    Having said that, the eye dominance concept isn't a lie at all.
    As a left eye dominant right hander I noticed that my forehand is good when I play in a semi-open stance ( or a neutral stance ) but it sucks when I play in open stance, especially when I'm not particularly rushed ( of course my tecnique/footwork is to blame but the point is that I feel much better - in power, timing ... - when hitting with a more closed position ).
    On the contrary, on the backhand I have huge trouble when taking the racquet behind my body in a closed stance ( Federer's usual position ) ( either I do a proper takeback but lose contact with the ball or I keep contact with the ball but at the cost of not doing a proper takeback - yes, my back is a little stiff, too - ) but I feel much better when I take the racquet on my left side ( Wawrinka's style ), especially hitting with an open stance.
    An the same goes for the slice backahnd : big takeback -> huge ulnar deviation ( no control at all ), smaller takeback ( racquet more on the left side ) -> firmer wrist for more power and control.
    I never tried to see the difference with my serve, though.
    These are all things mentioned in the dominant eye theory ( reminding that the main factor behind a player' success is the proper combination of good tecnique and footwork ).

      Eye dominance is definitely a real thing. But as of yet I'm not convinced it's the root of as many problems as people think it is. What I find when I assess players is that there are always other variables involved.
      There are normally deficits in either coordination, vestibular functions or aspects of visual function that can be changed, that also correlate to issue a player is struggling with.
      The stance that a player uses on a given shot is determined by the requirements of the ball they are receiving. There are certain situations where there is an element of choice, but not many. Most of the time the footwork required is based on the biomechanical requirements to create rotation from the ground up. When you watch the pros, they all use an open stance when moving to a wide ball. Unless it's to wide at which point they all use a running step.

    Fed holds his head still on both fh and bh, so that already debunks the whole trope.
    Good you take a nuanced and research based approach!

      Exactly. It's mind blowing how even high level coaches are ignoring that fact.

      Roger always mentioned how important "Stability" is in tennis. The head is just a part of the body. Stability (most of all Core Stability) is absolutely crucial. When you move like a rubber doll, you won't make any progress in tennis but in the hospital.

    I am right handed and left eye dominant - great backhand and working on forehand - to keep my head still.

      If you are cross eyed like me and federer, you need to look to your right when hitting forehand, keeps the ball inside the court

    Thanks for the Video! I am left eye dominant while I am a right handed player. My forehand is pretty good in contrast to my backhand which is off in power. Do you think I can get more power if I work on my backhand?

    Great points. One thing though regarding the comparison with pro players, is their neck mobility. It seems to me, being able to track the ball with both eyes is the optimal solution as this allows for optimal depth and movement tracking of the ball. But this requires you to be able to get the chin over the shoulder, which is not that easy for most people, including myself 🙂

    • @TennisHacker
      @TennisHacker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, and it’s something that no one mention. But after working with a lot of players a large percentage don’t have the neck range.

    I've noticed that I seem to get mesmerized by shots going to my backhand side. I bet it's because of my left eye dominance.

    What happens if a tennis player, like myself. has no eye dominance

    • @TennisHacker
      @TennisHacker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The same thing that happens if you do have a dominant eye…. Nothing!
      It is the ability to make accurate eye movements and to be able to process visual information that are important.

    Seems like it doesn't really matter in tennis. I have opposite eye dominance and yet my backhand has always been stronger than my forehand.

    Here's the least important comment: "Switch hitters" in baseball are those that can hit right-handed or left-handed. It doesn't refer to eye dominance. Fyi. :) Oh, and thank you for your informed reply to this question!

      @@TennisHacker I'm glad you let us know that eye dominance isn't really a factor in how well a person can play. One less thing for me/us to get distracted by. You're the only tennis instructor on YT I've seen to cover vision abilities. I'm going to start doing your eye exercises.

    Keep your eye on the ball properly and it does not make a lick of difference. A still head on impact and slightly after is going to help, regardless of which eye is dominant.

    I have a great backhand but I have problems with my backhand's timing does that mean I'm left eye dominant?

    • @TennisHacker
      @TennisHacker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if you are joking? In case you're not. ABSOLUTELY NOT. There are a whole bunch of things that cause problems for timing, BUT eye dominance is never the reason.

    Is left eye dominant person better plays with left handed?

    • @TennisHacker
      @TennisHacker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly it doesn't matter. Eye dominance is determined at birth and can't be changed (as far as we know). We have amazing right and left handed players with dominant left eye's and with dominant right eyes.

    Hey when you make video try to be more complete because if you haven't research on the topic it doesn't benefit anyone. Because some people have the same dominant ability on both eyes. Is that good or bad etc ?.....

    • @TennisHacker
      @TennisHacker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      With the greatest of respect, i think you’ve missed the point of the video.
      I’ve done lots of research into the subject. I would argue probably more than any other coach on TH-cam that has made a video talking about eye dominance.
      What i’m recommending is not to worry about eye dominance because you can’t change it. And instead assess and work on all the visual skills that you can impact.
