Bought some Obenauf's at a JAXS store in Colorado a couple years ago and I love that stuff. Had trouble finding after I got home. I just buy online now. Love Love Love IT!!!
Known about this stuff for years. Some Firefighter buddies of mine use it on their leather fire gear. If its good enough for that kind of abuse it should be great for your average person's leather goods. I love using it on all my boots, holsters, and gun belts. Preserves and makes them all look like new again.
Love leather especially sheaths... almost as much as bacon! There are hundreds of leather treatments that work fine but any leather used hard will deteriorate. Good leather that is processed properly at manufacture is key to a longer life cycle also. Use it and enjoy it!
I found out another use for it today. I had severely sun bleached whitetail antlers that were on my grandfathers shed for about 40 years and a coat of obenaufs brought them right back to life. Merry Christmas everyone.
I always use Renaissance Wax - Ren Wax on all my leather, and knives in storage or that I store in the sheath - not usually recommended but with Ren Wax it doesn't do any damage. Google it. I'd also like to second the comment from Quentin Tarrantino about Ian Atkinson and Leodis Leather, a fine teacher and great leather-worker.
i like ballistol i have a small shallow little plastic tub and when ever i get a new leather sheath or some other product ill pour some ballistol in the tub and let the sheath soak in it for a while then just reapply every now and the as needed
Use this on my cowboy work boots. I do heating and air running around attics all day really drys and scuffs up leather boots . This stuff will keep you boots looking great and keeps them from drying out LOVE IT !
I have never seen one of those small containers of Obenhauf's, but I have always wanted a smaller container for my pack. I have used the stuff for over 4yrs now on every leather product I own. It also works to protect steel, wood, and even dry skin/chapped lips!
Obenauf's is the best preservative available. Use it on my White's boots with Kevlar stitching otherwise the threads rot. Live in Pacific NW. Rains all the time here and been using this stuff for years. Make living and play outdoors. Quality footwear is the foundation upon which the rest of ourselves rely. Buy cheap tires? Obenaufs works, pH balanced, not acidic. In the long run, quality trumps scrimping, it's the initial investment that's tough sometimes. Great review. "It puts the lotion on the skin". lol
Jeff specifically says Obenauf is beeswax and minerals. Jeff is wrong though. Obenauf's website, available to you, states the product is "three natural oils suspended in Beeswax and Propolis." I am suspicious that they don't outright list the 3 oils while not calling it a proprietary blend. It may be a rebranding of some other cheap oils. They also claim that "mink oil causes irreparable damage to leather fibers." The 3 oils are not listed on their website and there is no phone # to call to ask
Also, no matter what the Ballistol pamphlets say, it's not good for leather IMO. What's the main ingredient of Ballistol? Mineral oil. All you need is a quick googling to find out mineral oil is bad for leather, it breaks up chemically over time damaging the leather.
Thats a good question, I really dont know, so far I dont becuase I use the stropping compound, and I dotn have any issues with the leather, theres usualy a coating a metal dust on ym strops too, lol
Thank you very much for your info ! (I also really appreciate your wry sense of humor. "I didn't steal this belt from Alice" lolol) I started with the big tub BEST leather preservative for ANYTHING!!! made.
:) youtube is an amazing experience Im glad to be part of it to learn and share expereinces I hope to one day meet more great people like you and your family in person
A god leather channel I would highly recommend is.. Ian Atkinson (leodis leather) he's an english guy, is allways on british blades forums and his custom leather work is second to none.. check him out if you're into your leathers :) I'm honestly not at all.. I just like to watch.
Hey cutlery lover, random question, where did you get your table you did the review on? Looks a lot like one I built my wife out of old barn wood. Might just be a store bought but I was curious. Great vid, keep em coming, I have really enjoyed son-seal for my leather care needs.
Agreed. I subscribed to cutlerylover, but after he made the comment about wrangle star, I unsubscribed. Wranglestar is an Emerson knife hater. He blocked me because I said that I personally had more problems with fit/finish with Benchmade. IDK. I use this leather stuff because of wolfe customs. That guy is a class act.
Obernauf's is absurdly overpriced. 4 ounces costs like 12 dollars. You can get generic beeswax/lanolin leather conditioner for less than half that price. While Obernauf's works very well, it's no better than the other beeswax/lanolin dressing available everywhere. The good thing about this sort of conditioner -- compared to oil-based conditioners -- is that it doesn't degrade the contact cement used to adhere the rand to the leather on many hiking boots.
Just thought I'd try and make this akward for you and mention that for the people that are really into leather like really really as you mentioned. To them this is porn LOL
Thank you so much Jeff. I am humbled.
Cody
I just ordered a pair of nicks thanks to you :) your one of a kind old school values !

The best coating for my Red Wings and Chippewas during the Winter
"You don't want to be rubbing the baglady"... quote of the year!
True, and a good point. example, i heard some mink oil products will eventually rot the tread used in boots and other leather products..
They also make a liquid that is great as a first coat. Especially if the leather is old and dry already. It will make it look like new.

I got the same stuff after Cody's recommendation. Definitely 2 thumbs up!
I found out another use for it today. I had severely sun bleached whitetail antlers that were on my grandfathers shed for about 40 years and a coat of obenaufs brought them right back to life. Merry Christmas everyone.
I use mink oil on all my knife sheaths. I just did it yesterday!
the link in the description is direct to their website

mink oil will actually make the leather lest moisturized while the lp is great and also make the leather much more supple
i like ballistol i have a small shallow little plastic tub and when ever i get a new leather sheath or some other product ill pour some ballistol in the tub and let the sheath soak in it for a while then just reapply every now and the as needed
RM Williams Saddle Cream is also amazing for leather.
Use this on my cowboy work boots. I do heating and air running around attics all day really drys and scuffs up leather boots . This stuff will keep you boots looking great and keeps them from drying out LOVE IT !

Actually if you heat the sheath it works better. If you heat the sheath it opens up the pores of the leather so it penetrates into the leather better.
I love Obenauf's and Wesco boots!
I also have a few Ka-Bars, but once I found Esee, they kinda just sit there...lol
Wranglerstar is top notch and I love his channel. Obenauf's, awesome product
also they would perfectly fit to your set up, old school, classy and self defense gold
Great now I have to go out and buy a bunch of leather just to maintain it. Is it wierd that I'm kind of excited about that?

Ballistol sould still work to hydrate leathjer but not bnearly as good as this stuff, Ill stick with ballistol on my metals...
I switched from Pecards to Obenauf's LP years ago. I also use their Leather Oil on my work boots.
Yes it means up on top
hey Jeff, didn't you made a review on a some kind of fancy leather gun caring belt?
Does maintaining leather stop it from having an aged look?
Yep, they're the tags.
Would I be correct in assuming that these are the descriptive tags?
i use snow seal its the best of the best

Great Vid, Obenauf's rocks. Listen to Cody. Get the boots. I got the White's Smokejumpers. No regrets.
Thanx for the tip.
Anyone know any local (USA, TX) sources for Obenauf's? Looks like Amazon only has the big tubs, and I definitely wont be needing that much (yet.)
I use that stuff on practically everything.
obenauf means up on top in german
What about Balistol?
your making a lit of videos man it awesome. thanks i cant keep up
Heat your leather in the oven, or with a hair dryer, and then apply, for a real fast soak!
Nice video Jeff, but my i request some lock back stuff please. Cheers man
I just use dr martens wonder balsm, been using it on my docs for a long time and works great.
olive oil is detter than obenoufs because you can use it to treat your steel your leather and your wood
I do believe this was in another video from a guy on youtube with a very old couch I forgot the name of his channel . Can someone help me?
Also, no matter what the Ballistol pamphlets say, it's not good for leather IMO. What's the main ingredient of Ballistol? Mineral oil. All you need is a quick googling to find out mineral oil is bad for leather, it breaks up chemically over time damaging the leather.

I've decided to give it a try, just bought a 8 oz pack hopefully it will work well on my sheath..
it looks like the mink oil i put on my boots to waterproof them!
Thats a good question, I really dont know, so far I dont becuase I use the stropping compound, and I dotn have any issues with the leather, theres usualy a coating a metal dust on ym strops too, lol

I like the stuff been using it on my work boots for a few years.
It puts the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose.
