is or was he the greatest opera singer of all time, in my humble opinion he was and still is and now he sings with angels how great that must be to listen to, how lucky is our GOD, RIP.
This is the most beautiful hymn in Christendom for the birth of Christ. Sung by Luciano Pavarotti, Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal, and Les Disciples de Massenet this must have been a great performance for the ears of Christians who listened to it. To me it resembles a heavenly music welcoming the Saviour to earth.
Brings me back to when I was an 8 year old Altar boy in 1959 at Midnight Mass (when it was in Latin and I cried when this was sung by the choir - my Mom always remembered that)

November 13, 23 . My Christmas season has started. And this celestial performance always heralds the beginning for me. Merci for always being with us dear Pavarotti.
Adestes Fidelis was composed by the Portuguese king John IV (17 century) and was known in Great Britain as the Portuguese Hymn. Adestes Fidelis fu composta dal re portoghese Giovanni IV (XVII secolo) ed era conosciuta in Gran Bretagna come l'inno portoghese.
There was and will be no better tenor in this world than Luciano Pavarotti. Belive it or not: When I attended one of his concerts there was something like a heavenly aura around him. He helped me to survive in hard times of my life and is still with me.
Our beautiful Christian legacy, what a joy it must have been to be in that cathedral on Christmas Eve, celebrating, all in the glory of our beloved Lord, Jesus Christ! You can see that this is good. Lets not throw this legacy away. God Bless you all.
The most extraordinary look of elation and reverence comes over very briefly in Luciano Pavarotti’s face at 2:16/17, just after he takes a breather, as it were, as the choir takes over. It’s as if the performer, on hearing the jubilance of the great choir, and in realising the glory to God that every moment in the music brings, can only truly do so when he senses standing apart from himself when he takes that breather, allowing him to fully appreciate the magnificence of the choir and music that he has lead. The decade that had been the 1970s was a strange time to be watching television. There was always a sense of utter, utter deflation had one not got home in time or plain forgotten or neglected to change channels to watch a great or much-loved programme or show or performance broadcast live that one had been anticipating all day or all week. Sometimes the feeling of deflation was so acute it felt like humiliation, as if one had messed up one’s own standards of behaviour. The end credits that greeted you as you rushed to the TV to catch something was just like ending up with egg on your face. There was also the business of revealing your soul to a parent or sibling because in your desperation to watch something, you might have more than tried to merely persuade them to forgo watching what they wanted to watch “on the other side”: in other words a petty fight might have ensued. (Most families could only afford one television; many had had to rent one). Video tape recorders did not really come around until about 1981, I recall. They were expensive, too. But had this performance or concert at Montreal’s Notre Dame cathedral been broadcast in the run-up to Christmas in 1978, I would have been agog trying to soak it all up, knowing it was there at that moment, not ever likely to be broadcast again in the near future. And, strangely, that was why there was a great sense of connection in the analogue times of few channels. From the bin man to the solicitor, from the mechanic to the pharmacist, from the spotty teenager to the First World War veteran, each, typically the following day, had asked each other of their peers and whomever, if they had watched, say, “Pavarotti in action” or “giving it his all” or “Pavarotti at full belt”. There would have been no agenda behind a query like that. For the cynical, socialist union family man, it may have been the least embarrassing TV event of a Sunday evening. “I happened to watch the Christmas concert shown last night. The wife was keen on it. Did you see it?” “Did you see on TV last night …?” was probably the most common question asked in the Seventies. Edit: spelling correction.

For many years, the Luciano Pavarotti Christmas Special on PBS was an annual family event. The music and the majestic Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal was must-see viewing. Moving and powerful.
This is my favourite recording of this old Christmas carol. My late grandmother absolutely adored Pavarotti's talent. They both passed the same week. My grandmother passed September 1,2007 and he passed September 6, 2007
Probably the best rendition ever recorded. When I first went to Notre Dame du Montreal in September of 2017, it was 39 years to the date of this concert. I was pretty emotional, due to having watched this incredible concert for my entire life on VHS.
