BEARS? LUMBERJACKS? THE GRIND? What is Grouse Mountain all about? - Vancouver, Canada

  • We are in Vancouver for two days before hopping on the Rocky Mountaineer train to Banff... so what all can we do in two days? Well, first off, we are going up a mountain! In researching what to do in Vancouver, one of the top spots is Grouse Mountain.
There is so much to do here! First off, you arrive at the base of the mountain where you buy your tickets. From here, you can take the tram up the mountain... or climb it on the Grouse Grind... we took the tram... But once on top, there are paths that will take you in different directions. There is a lumberjack show (very entertaining!), several overlooks into Vancouver (the cruise ships look so small from up here), wildlife encounters, ziplining, and even a ski lift that will take you even higher to the top summit aka the Peak of Vancouver. The views are amazing, especially on a clear day. We had a fabulous day here!

Glad to see you went to Grouse Mountain! I live in a suburb of Vancouver and I do the Grouse Grind a few times a year. There are so many things to do for free at the top of the mountain and I wear my "I beat the Grind" shirt all the time! Too many visitors to Vancouver miss seeing the true beauty of the area by not going to Grouse Mountain!

You can tell from the comments that we Canadians are proud of all that our country has to offer! I remember doing the gondola in 1973. As for poutine, we make a point of trying it in as many different places in Canada as we can - but none can beat the choices in Quebec City! (They also have the best beaver tails!).

Jason - I am with you on the fear of heights topic. My sister & I did Grouse Mountain in September one year and we also took the ski lift to the very top. I totally froze between the legs dangling and having nothing securing me in place - so I stared at a mole on my sister’s face the entire time up and made her talk to me also (she was like Alisa with no fear). I also told her when we got to the top there was absolutely no way I could take it back down. So the employees pointed to the road they drive to get there and we walked back down. The views are phenomenal but dangling free like that just is no good. 😵‍💫

I would have been in flip flops too, you would think we would learn. In 1986 they had the "world's fair" in Vancouver they called it Expo 86. It was fun, but we abandoned it for more local adventures. On of those adventures was an international lumber jack competition. One of the compactions was altered chainsaws. They were altered with Harley motors!

Hi 👋🏻 Jason you don't like heights because it's a fear of falling, and it sucks, I have that too 😏. Capilano Suspended Bridge is a fun activity and it does have awesome Fudge 🤣 and you can get a certificate that says you crossed the bridge.
Now as for Poutine, glad you enjoyed it but the best place to taste them is in the east so Toronto or Montreal, I'll advocate for Montreal because I'm originally from there and now live in BC, and you can visit the Old Port that can feel a touch like Europe, the best time to visit is during the summer when all the festivals are happening, you can try a smoked meat sandwich and a bagel ( fairmount or St-Viateur) to see which you prefer, Montreal one or NYC 🙂🙃, if you do end up visiting hope you'll have fun
Remember it's not a real poutine if it doesn't have cheese curds 😉

We apologize for the high cost of everything in Vancouver BC...BC stands for bring cash. The Grind is quite advanced bc it's very steep. Bring lots of water, snacks, cash for ride down, shirt to change bc you'll be soaked with sweat, head-flashlight if you are starting late. I got caught at dusk. Very dangerous. Court shoes no good. Require hiking boots. There are slippery parts.
