  • Stoicism and the Politics of the Roman Empire: A Critical Evaluation
    In this lecture, Dr. Taimur Rahman briefly examines 500 years of the development of Stoic philosophy in light of the contradictions within the Roman Empire. The lecture argues that the Stoics ended up aligning with the Senatorial oligarchs against the Roman Popular party. This political alignment has further implications about how we view Stoicism today given the intellectual inheritance of both Christianity and Enlightenment.
    The lecture was delivered at the Civil Service Academy in Lahore on 15/2/21.

    Love you, sir. This shows your true spirit of marxism that you keep uploading your wisdom for the unprivileged people like me. I have watched your multiple lectures and one thing I can say with confidence is that I have never seen such an academic like you. The way you engage students, your scholarly grip over knowledge and your storytelling techniques... It's really admirable. Plz take it as a compliment. Again, love you so much!!!

    what a beautiful lecture learned more about stoicism and the context of stoicism and marcus aurileus but at the end i learned that we should learn only emotional control and desire control so our desire don't become lust. so get help from it but don't t make it the way of life as it is not perfect too

    • @Taimur_Laal
      @Taimur_Laal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. That pain and suffering is horrific. And I don't want anyone to suffer through it. I want everyone to have the opportunities that I've had in my life. Food, clothing, shelter, education, health care, and decent paying job, and relative security. Is it a bad thing that I want for others what I want for myself?

    • @ghazalgeetguru5323
      @ghazalgeetguru5323 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Taimur_Laal no. Indeed a good wish. But my point is different ie a man from affluent culture cannot truly realize the pain which he or she has not experienced. Hence, his words are like great virtuoso vocalist without any spirit. Ur intentions are pure but not sufficient. An intellectual is always class oriented.

    • @Taimur_Laal
      @Taimur_Laal  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The premise of your argument is that I have to personally realise a pain in order to realise that it is should be eliminated. That means that only a doctor who has cancer should cure cancer. The premise of my argument is that I don't have to have cancer in order to treat it.

      @@Taimur_Laal hahaha... analogy is out of place.. i only suggest the person from upper class may be a sympathetic to lower class but he cannot realize wht happens to us(the lower ones). Thats why any upper class intellectual is not popular among the poor. They distrust

      Taimur, would an aristocrat from a different era be able to sympathize with the woes of the proletariat under capitalism? In that case they are removed by time, so it is difficult, similarly, the bourgeois are removed by space. You can be an advocate and a scientist for the working class but it will never change that you exist in a different place from other people, not anything to be ashamed of but you must openly acknowledge it
