And yet this video is 1989 and many of those great cars, were the product of Toyota’s 1980s ambitions since it takes 4-6 YEARS to develop new models. As soon as the 90s hit, they started regressing and saving that engineering greatness for flagship models and dumbing down everything else.
I would say they were better in the 80s- Rear drive Corolla, aw11 mr2, 4wd Tercel, rear drive and all trac celica, Cressida, 1st gen 4Runner, fj60 land cruiser that you could still get with a mt, the original Toyota van, introduction of the Supra, and Corolla and Camry wagons with a mt available

You forgot my 1991 MR2 Turbo! It’s not as precise a car as my 1994 Celica GT4 (Tho it has the same turbocharged engine) or my V8 powered 1997 Lexus LS400, however it is more visceral and infinitely more interesting to drive. All are amazing vehicles with high performance barely reduced by over 250k miles of virtually maintenance free ownership. I keep trying to buy a newer car but nothing currently available feels as real or fun to drive.
I remember when you bought a Japanese car because it was different, because the Japanese had designed it. I'd love to go back to the late 80s and buy all those Japanese cars over.

I had a 91 GT 5 speed coupe in the 90s. Excellent car that I took to 200K miles and had no major problems with at all. It still had the factory installed starter and master cylinder working at that mileage. The worst thing about the car was the hinge design for the trunk lid on the standard coupe. The hinge would break and the corner of the trunk lid made contact with the body of the car. The power antenna was also prone to failure. The 5SFE was bulletproof in every way. You could even break the timing belt and do no harm.
You better believe those engines were bullet proof! My '92 GT-S was the most reliable (fun) car I've ever owned. Oil changes, tires and replace the battery every 5 years or so. My '90 All-Trac with the ST185, not so much :(
+abracing199 It took me years to find a good ST165 after selling my old one in a fit of weakness. They're out there, but they aren't easy to find. Very much worth it if you find a good one, or a nightmarish ordeal if you find one that's had the stuffing beaten and modded out of it.
I owned a '90 for several years. I named her the cash sponge. While it definitely was cool being able to say that I owned one of the cars that I'd always wanted, I can't really recommend it. They're a very needy car, and as most if not all have been molested over the past quarter century, finding one that doesn't need a complete restoration is a tall order. My '92 GT-S on the other hand was a CHAMP. Every option that the ST185 had, minus the turbo and AWD of course, and absolutely none of the headaches. In a moment of sheer stupidity I traded that car for a new 7th gen Celica in '00. The disappointment was palpable. Of all the cars that I've owned over the years, that GT-S is the one I'd want back.
You must have owned a lemon, I bought my first ST185 almost 9 years ago and all that went on it was rear struts and the Rad (due to mixing the coolant wrong and freezing over winter)
Tim Beals You could say that. I'll spare you the back story as it's painful to recall the stupid money that was poured into that thing. Suffice it to say that I do not miss my All-Trac, but I'd buy my '92 GT-S back in a heartbeat.
I bought mine off my best friend. He was going to donate it to goodwill because the brakes were messed up. I gave him $250 for it and fixed it up. Runs great with over 190,000 miles and will always be my favorite car. I drive it less now because I'm scared that it could break down randomly and i'd have to have it scrapped, but eventually once I get enough money I'll have it fully restored and put a new engine in it.
I had a new 1991 Celica ST a lifetime ago. I bought a JDM 1992 GT-Four (AllTrac) last year. These are amazing cars, still. With the chip shortage, Toyota would do well to reintroduce simpler, more supply-chain safe cars of this sort. The review has the weight issue of the AllTrac/GT-Four dead on. They're heavy and heavy in the front. But if you lighten up the chassis a hundred or so pounds--no sunroof, no ABS, no System 10 amp, lightweight battery, carbon fiber hood, rear seat and spare tire delete--they tighten up. Add a little horsepower through boost and you have a zoomer.
st notchbacks were horrible! gt notchback included! I had a GT-S and was a wonderful car :-) one of the problems with all these celicas is no railing to stop the water from getting in your car while traveling with windows down when washing your winshield :-(
Excellent! My first car was a 1992 Celica GT that I bought from my grandfather. When I had kids, it went to my great aunt, and from there, my uncle. He's still driving it with about 125,000 miles on the odometer.
I can't believe that's what my car looked like 25 years and 300,000 miles ago. I wish I could've bought it brand new and just kept it in bubble wrap. Anyone here notice how well these things drive in the snow? or is it just me?

@@1northsparrow246 And no velour :( Its so much better than leather for me but nowadays its either bad quality cloth or leather :/ Alcantara isnt like it either and its high premium when velour was lovely middle ground superbly durable, soft and plush to touch and didnt heat up like leather would. Best of all the materials.

How in the world could Toyota NOT continue the celica nameplate ??? They are sleeping on a huge market and cult following that the celica has. Toyota is sleeping on their own heritage. They were so well rounded as a brand back then. I would give anything to see these models back in the show room floor.

Had a 93 Celica GT for 6 years... Best car I've ever owned. Very well built, prefect seating position, and decent gas mileage. I really miss her. : T That being said, I wanted an All Trac and still do. Id rather have something I truly love and find uniquely beautiful than just another Evo or STi. Besides, the All Trac/GTFour came before them anyway. : )
I also miss the interior colors. Manufacturers need to bring back those blue, oxblood and othet colors. The same old black, grey and tan is so boring !!
+A Scott This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed by manufactures. Modern interiors feel synthetic and lifeless: interiors 25 years ago had as much style and design as some exteriors do today.
Speaking as the owner of an 85pype Supra with an brown dash, oxblood underdash, and blue door panels. I would prefer black. They're so cheesy, the brown I could see but blue is no go. I wish they had better quality plastics, or simpler dashes

I recently own a '92 Celica GT convertible. It is one of the best cars that I've owned so far and I've driven more expensive cars like the Porsche 944 and BMW 3 series E30 and E90 models. I also like the fact it is a rare car, yet so easy to find parts for.

90s definitely best years for Toyota , the Supra came out in 93 i believe and we all know that became a legend thanks to the 2000 movie Fast and Furious Paul Walker would not have looked as good driving any other car.
Man. The Celica stands out like a sore thumb in the 1990 Toyota lineup. I don't think it was till 1992-93 that most of Toyota's car lineup better paired up to the styling of the Celica. The early 90's was a big transition period in styling for automakers.
This was the summer of 1989, so all those cars had been designed and were being put into testing. The Celica was designed in 1987, as was the new Previa, MR2, and Land Cruiser.
It was the early 1980s, when the Japanese car companies "invaded" the North American market. By 1990, assembly plants in North America had already opened for certain makes and models. Still, the world headquarters are elsewhere.
Notice how all of the Asian sports cars back then has MANUAL transmissions? Now it is hard to even find one that offers a manual, they are all automatic.
All trac barely mentioned. Turns out to be one of the best enthusiast cars ever and dominates wrc...asleep at the wheel or what like they didn't even drive it
Wesley C not just "inspired", these _were_ legitimate rally cars straight from the factory. They literally only needed a cage to be rally-ready. I'd give anything for Toyota to dive deep into homologation specials and factory-backed efforts!
IMHO 1989 was the best year for Toyota in America. After that they started to listen to their marketing department and watered all the NA market designs down on what the thought Americans would like.. I miss the quirky and awesome JAPANESE cars we got in the early years of import cars!

I think that started happening in the early 90s, as 1986-91 had Toyota approve so many high quality designs for production. The 1991-92 crash changed all of that for redesigns, as that first affected 1995+ models.
a lot of legendary cars appearing and disappearing around this time... Toyota really had it all together. hopefully we are now on the cusp of a new era what with the 86 and supra set to return... It'd be cool if they also brought a more conventional tercel like sub compact into the market to replace the yaris.
Kind of miss the old days of predictable automotive evolution. Every generation the Japanese would release slight upgrades in engine power, suspension, transmission, appearance, etc. Somewhere along the way, that practice died, and cars became appliances. Now it takes disruption and evolution for anyone to notice.
I got a 92/93 GTS me first toy =} But it's SO rough (suspension) and dog slow ={ The ratios are freaking short too But the exhaust so beefy upswept makes lil bubbly backfire sounds o.0 Red with black liftback .. sick
To answer your question: Without a doubt. Steer clear of the All-Trac, if you can even find one. They're beautiful and you'd be part of a very exclusive club, but many members of that club have cars that are torn apart in their garage. The expense to maintain one is what finally convinced me to give mine up. I don't miss it. My '92 GT-S on the other hand was a truly great car. All of the features of the ST185, minus the AWD and turbo, and absolutely none of the headaches. An extremely reliable, fun car that looked great from any angle. Of all the cars I've owned over the years and stupidly sold, that's the one I'd want back.
3Soul ENT Definitely worth it. the 3S-GTE engine in the all-trac is the same engine that was put in the MR2 turbo of the same time period. It is a very robust engine but of course requires maintenance and can't just be ran to hell and shut off burning hot (turbo...). In a 4 year period the US only received ~1500 examples, they are few and far between now. Most of those went to northern states due to the capability of the AWD for winter driving which of course means salt damage. So there are many examples that need love. I looked 8yrs for mine and spent another 2 making sure she was properly road worthy and in sound mechanical condition. With exhaust, intake and cooling at 1bar of boost mine put down a modest ~250awhp on the dyno. Since 2009 the only thing I've had to replace on the car has been the factory clutch...which I should have expected with a 100awhp increase. Since that was replaced in 2011 with a more appropriate one I've had zero failures besides something small like a hose popping off because I didn't clamp it down enough. They are great cars and pieces of history. This generation of Celica was the car that arguably gave birth to its future competition in the Lancer Evo and the WRX. And it was the first car to use compound curve metal stamping technology which Toyota innovated to keep from being copied.
I recommend getting one if you can find one, if you do regular maintenance they last forever and the engines are bullet proof if you keep them stock. I myself have a 92' RC I imported 10yrs ago and have only replaced the factory struts and a Rad (I broke), I also picked up a 89' base model GT-Four 6 years ago for a parts car (not on the road) and that 3s-gte is so reliable that even with the 6-7yr old fuel and oil it turns over no problem and can still kick the ass end out if you stomp on it in a corner.
Think Toyota has always just built Avalons, Camrys, & Corollas?!!!!! NAY NAY!!!!!! There was a time, in the 80's & '90's, when they built cars that kicked some SERIOUS ASS, & this 1990 lineup is surely a fine representation of that!!!!!

Funny, I hated the blue and red interiors. Black was a coveted option back then. It was more expensive, and hence not as common.
The St185 engines in these were/are bomb proof if maintained correctly!

honestly i am not trying to promote my channel or anything but i do have videos of my celica doing some flybys on my channel. i think it was recorded in 2004ish. i installed a cheap intake and it actually sounded pretty good!
90s definitely best years for Toyota , the Supra came out in 93 i believe and we all know that became a legend thanks to the 2000 movie Fast and Furious Paul Walker would not have looked as good driving any other car.
Man. The Celica stands out like a sore thumb in the 1990 Toyota lineup. I don't think it was till 1992-93 that most of Toyota's car lineup better paired up to the styling of the Celica. The early 90's was a big transition period in styling for automakers.
You can say the same thing about Nissan and the 300ZX from the same period. The designs of those cars were definitely ahead of their time.
This was the summer of 1989, so all those cars had been designed and were being put into testing.
The Celica was designed in 1987, as was the new Previa, MR2, and Land Cruiser.
I wouldn't mind owning one. Simple and sporty.

I'm guessing some marketing guy misquoted that. As that previa design is definitely not front wheel drive friendly.

It was the early 1980s, when the Japanese car companies "invaded" the North American market. By 1990, assembly plants in North America had already opened for certain makes and models. Still, the world headquarters are elsewhere.
Notice how all of the Asian sports cars back then has MANUAL transmissions? Now it is hard to even find one that offers a manual, they are all automatic.

A rally inspired Celica, looks very nice car, great cheap price.
Wesley C not just "inspired", these _were_ legitimate rally cars straight from the factory. They literally only needed a cage to be rally-ready. I'd give anything for Toyota to dive deep into homologation specials and factory-backed efforts!

IMHO 1989 was the best year for Toyota in America. After that they started to listen to their marketing department and watered all the NA market designs down on what the thought Americans would like.. I miss the quirky and awesome JAPANESE cars we got in the early years of import cars!

I think that started happening in the early 90s, as 1986-91 had Toyota approve so many high quality designs for production.
The 1991-92 crash changed all of that for redesigns, as that first affected 1995+ models.
The all trac is very hard car to find
a lot of legendary cars appearing and disappearing around this time... Toyota really had it all together. hopefully we are now on the cusp of a new era what with the 86 and supra set to return... It'd be cool if they also brought a more conventional tercel like sub compact into the market to replace the yaris.

Kind of miss the old days of predictable automotive evolution. Every generation the Japanese would release slight upgrades in engine power, suspension, transmission, appearance, etc. Somewhere along the way, that practice died, and cars became appliances. Now it takes disruption and evolution for anyone to notice.
The previa is not front wheel drive, it is either rear wheel drive, or all wheel drive.
This being 1989, such advance info was harder to attain. MW’s source was uninformed.

92 is the 5SFE engine. Not built for torque, built for cornering :P
You CAN boost it about 6psi if you want (without blowing it up).

To answer your question: Without a doubt. Steer clear of the All-Trac, if you can even find one. They're beautiful and you'd be part of a very exclusive club, but many members of that club have cars that are torn apart in their garage. The expense to maintain one is what finally convinced me to give mine up. I don't miss it.
My '92 GT-S on the other hand was a truly great car. All of the features of the ST185, minus the AWD and turbo, and absolutely none of the headaches. An extremely reliable, fun car that looked great from any angle. Of all the cars I've owned over the years and stupidly sold, that's the one I'd want back.
3Soul ENT Definitely worth it. the 3S-GTE engine in the all-trac is the same engine that was put in the MR2 turbo of the same time period. It is a very robust engine but of course requires maintenance and can't just be ran to hell and shut off burning hot (turbo...). In a 4 year period the US only received ~1500 examples, they are few and far between now. Most of those went to northern states due to the capability of the AWD for winter driving which of course means salt damage. So there are many examples that need love.
I looked 8yrs for mine and spent another 2 making sure she was properly road worthy and in sound mechanical condition. With exhaust, intake and cooling at 1bar of boost mine put down a modest ~250awhp on the dyno. Since 2009 the only thing I've had to replace on the car has been the factory clutch...which I should have expected with a 100awhp increase. Since that was replaced in 2011 with a more appropriate one I've had zero failures besides something small like a hose popping off because I didn't clamp it down enough. They are great cars and pieces of history. This generation of Celica was the car that arguably gave birth to its future competition in the Lancer Evo and the WRX. And it was the first car to use compound curve metal stamping technology which Toyota innovated to keep from being copied.
I recommend getting one if you can find one, if you do regular maintenance they last forever and the engines are bullet proof if you keep them stock. I myself have a 92' RC I imported 10yrs ago and have only replaced the factory struts and a Rad (I broke), I also picked up a 89' base model GT-Four 6 years ago for a parts car (not on the road) and that 3s-gte is so reliable that even with the 6-7yr old fuel and oil it turns over no problem and can still kick the ass end out if you stomp on it in a corner.
