To answer you're question, no, Naofumi didn't switch to another shield to make it easier to sleep. That is one of his new shields. He had gotten three new shields from the plant monster, but they were all from the same series. That was the bio plant shield III. Noafumi is able to max out his shields by either having the equipped for a while or feeding them more of the same kind of materials he used to unlock them. Once he has maxed them out their equip effect either becomes passive or their effect becomes more powerful. Some of his shields have +1 ATK when he has them equipped, but once maxed out they always give him +1 ATK even when switched to another shield. In the case of the bio plant shields he could modify plants to a larger range, gaining better control over it. He change things like inelegance, growth, mutation, etc.
I think him just having it out helps to "level it" like you said, even while he sleeps, I remember hearing something like that some time ago, so sleeping with it is a good way to do that.

If you break them you can automatically learn the magic sealed inside. Since the only one she had left was the one she needed for work she instead gave Naofumi grimoires. He had to learn to read the language and learn the spells the hard way, but he got a better understanding of this world's magic. Once he had learned the spells he fed the grimoire to the shield and gained the book shield. It's effect is magic enchantment, aiding his spell casting, but he largely uses it to hide his shield, passing it off as normal book. This was so he wouldn't be hampered by the negative reputation of the shield hero. Because he kept the book shield equipped for so long it's effect has become passive and will remain even if he switches to another shield. The other heroes do something similar to hide their weapons, or prevent them from becoming cumbersome in their day to day life. Itsuki hid his identity as the bow hero by turning his bow into a small accessory that resembled a bow and carrying a sword, which he can do as long he doesn't intend on using it in a fight. No he gave that Village Most of the seeds for the plant's fruit. 7. Raphtalia doesn't consider herself very pretty, because Raccoon Demi-Humans aren't seen as being pretty or heavily sought after. This is why she keeps asking Naofumi if he finds her attractive.
