@@marmyeater Bruh, just because Anime cuts out or bends a bit of content, like many other anime do. This did NOT make it any less satisfying to see Naofumi's name cleared. I could do without this episode being dragged on and on with 70% of it being contemplating how to kill them, or Naofumi a truly evil standing where Raphtalia and the others actually felt disgusted by him. Also why they took out how Naofumi didn't actually care about Raphtalia at the beginning. He would use her just to let out his hatred towards Myne at Raph since she was defenseless, small, and frail.

The Queen and Naofumi were waaay darker in the manga and novel
When the Trash King and Bitch were brought before her, she encased the King in ice and repeatedly slapped him in the face while listing every single mistake he did, in full view of the whole kingdom. If he tried to explain himself, she just slapped him again to shut him up. Since Malty had made the Kingdom's treasury her personal wallet, the Queen also made a list of all the damages and expenses she incurred, including the cost of the burnt forest, and told Malty to work until she paid it off, and if she refused, she would be forced into slavery
She then gave Naofumi free reign over what punishment the two would get. Malty tried to beg at Naofumi's feet, but this just made him angrier and he immediately gave the death sentence. Fun fact here is that Malty had not once called Naofumi by his name, until now, and she apparently mispronounced it
Instead of dissuading Naofumi, the Queen suggested even worse punishments than a normal execution like cutting off their hands and feet or flaying them alive. Naofumi even briefly considered these punishments
It was after this that Naofumi came up with the idea of changing their names to Trash and Bitch (keep in mind that in the novel, he had been calling them these names in his head since his fight with Motoyasu over Raphtalia). He saw that a lifetime of public humiliation was a better punishment than death or dismemberment
Melty also mentioned that she saw her mother burning portraits of the King, and Naofumi saw the Queen's servants carrying around pictures of the King and Malty that she would use as target practice whenever she needed to vent her frustrations
Damn! They should've done that version in the anime

He was much more ruthless and pragmatic in the novel and manga.
For instance, the main reason he bought Raphtalia specifically and not the other slaves in the shop was because she was a girl (the same gender as Malty) and he wanted to see her suffering, imagining that she was Malty. He though that this would satiate his anger somehow
Here's the exact quote

Looking at its frightened eyes, I can feel the intense desire to dominate her.
It's good to imagine her as if I enslaved that woman. So even if I die, my soul also won't bear as much of a grudge that way."

the queen didn't suggest other punishments because she was dark,she simply didn't want his family to be killed and since she knew that naofumi wouldn't have done that she played him

@@RamdomView That was true in the web novel, but that was like the first draft. We can't count on that happening in the anime, certainly not being revealed in the first three seasons. The author said the light novel will have a different ending, so that might of changed. If it still is I haven't gotten that far as I'm only up to date with the US release of the LN, and even in Japan that's still ongoing.

Apparently in the comics/novels, when the king and princess had their names to Trash and Bitch, the queen declared that anyone who refused to address them by their new names was gonna get the death penalty.

I love the manga version. Instead of the queen sentencing them to death, Naofumi was given free reign to choose their punishment.
He immediately sentenced them to death, but stopped it and had their names changed like you saw. But it was also made extremely illegal to call Bitch and Trash by their old names. Its hilarious!!

Yeah, my friend told me about that. I think the director of the anime didn't want naofumi looking like some vengeful heartless asshole. Personally I would have liked the trial to be more in line with the manga. Oh well. It is what it is.
The anime was good too, but manga is somewhat better but hey it's manga. Anime just straight up humiliation and execution but naofumi intervene while manga he can do what he wants with them.
the Queen is much darker (I hate how they nerfed how badass she is in the anime, she is much cooler in the written material) and as such when she denies Naofumi their deaths she gives him alternative options, flaying them alive, ripping off limbs, anything to make them wish they were dead. That's when he gets the idea to give them their names. Naofumi has more villainous expressions in the WN, LN and manga that the anime sadly doesn't convey. It also doesn't convey how much he cares for Raphtalia and Filo either.
@@samseison Japan likes their heroes to be submissive and to go with the flow, because that's what they want their people to be and do. Naofumi's character conflicts with that, so they deemed it needed to be changed.

And it was only stated that it happened, not written in detail. As far as I can remember.

The anime toned down Naufomi's darker moments. He was all for killing them, but the queen talked him down to anything short of that. Amputation was on the table. He still still settle for humiliating them. Myne has to give her legal name when claiming rewards at the guild.
Speaking of which she is now in debt. She had been taking money from the treasury to go to the spa for a while now. Also the Queen tossed in the cost of putting out that forest fire.
Something we also missed was the queen forcing the pair to bow to Naofumi, a call back to the last time he spoke with her husband.
Yeah the anime was pretty nice in it’s own respect but they tried to change him into more of a paragon and it was pretty disappointing.

I never heard of “Shield Hero,” so when I saw that awful first episode, I HAD to watch the rest of this series. Watching you get to this point was so satisfying!!

Something they never touch on in the show that is explained in the manga is why the King hates the shield hero. One of the past shield hero's help to found the demi human nations, that nation went to war with the king Aultcrays nation when he was like in mid teens. The demi human nation arranged the assassination's of Aultcrays entire family, only the Aultcray and I think his little sister survived. They escaped to the nation of Melromarc who were also at war with the demi human nation, and Aultcray joined the army and in his time during the war became a hero of the people. while Aultcray was fighting, the demi humans sent I think a raiding party behind front lines witch led to the Kings sister being killed as well. After the war was fought to a stalemate and a forced peace was established the King festered a terrible hatred for all demi humans and the shield hero witch he blames for making it possible for the demi humans to become so strong in the first place. The reason the Demi human nation went to war with 2 human nations was because of the mistreatment and enslavement of there people in those country's. The Kings Nation was overwhelmed and i think turned into the other demi human dominant country but it has such a even divide between the two people it is not as extreme as the other in demi human superiority.
I'm so glad y'all put this out, now I can say it. As one of the many who waited week to week for each episode, this felt so good getting to this ep. I absolutely love this turning point and how the season was set up as a whole. I won't say anymore on it... At least, not yet.
This is the most satisfying episodes i've ever seen in my whole life. Everything from then on forward won't be as intense as the first episodes anymore

Out of all the heroes, I fw Ren the most, ong ong.. I haven't read the manga but he seems the most chill n shi..
In the manga the queen proposed they cut their arms and legs, take away their royalty and let them live in poverty, begging for their life.
This episode is the most satisfying in the all The series because we finally got to see the justice delivered the truth revealed and that princess getting what she deserves
There was a nice comparison post where they had naofumi leaving on ep 1 and the scene in this ep literally the same scenery but with the drastic differences.
the queen does try to help the shield hero but in the manga shes actually more controlling and dark she wasnt going to stop him in the manga she told him he cant kill them only cause other nations actually know the king from his time in the army and it would have actually caused division if they killed him originally she told him he could cut off a arm or leg. shes better then the king but she does have a dark side so does naofumi but only cause of bitch. and in the manga the nickname is not slut its bitchy. also filos isnt the name in the manga lol its firo it took me a while to get used to it being changed to filo
