Can I be myself at work? | Linden Vazey | TEDxUOA

  • In this TEDx talk, Linden talks about transitioning from a role in tech consulting to a career in leadership coaching, and one of the biggest challenges she face along the way which was answering the question “how can I be successful at work and be true to my purpose?”. After more than a decade in tech consulting for some of NZ’s largest firms, Linden hit a point that you’re likely familiar with. She felt stuck in a story that no longer fit. Some part of her knew there was more to life than constant people-pleasing.
She didn’t understand it at the time, but she was starting a journey of growth and realizing that much of her personality and ways of living were a defense. While it had kept her safe in the past, it was keeping her from growing into the wife, mother and leader she knew she could be. She decided that she wanted to really know herself, and to provide her children an example of a life led by courage, love and hope.
In 2020 she started ‘Living on Purpose’, where she helps professionals challenge their beliefs to create their own definition of success. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Focus on yourself, and learn new things every day. Those who were not there at your bad times might not be with you in the coming future. Embrace yourself and NEVER GIVE UP! Because you are responsible for your success and happiness.

This is exactly how I felt working for other companies in the past. I could never really be me. So when I started working at my new job, I fell into that "safe" habit. But on orientation we were told, don't hide who you are, come as you truly are. Don't cover your tattoos, or piercings, color your hair however you want, be the most authentic you. I almost cried tears of joy. My new company has been accepting and understanding in the most genuine way possible and it's almost overwhelming but it's also very freeing. I couldn't have asked for a better place to work.

Wow! That's so great (and sadly, rare to hear). What company do you work for now? (Or rather, what company was a great experience)?

Do yourself a favor. Listen to this from a guy that started out with an open heart and an open book. I would tell my whole story to people. I would let people really know me. That was in the 90s and early 2000's. It was a big mistake. Don't tell your story at work and even to friends unless that friend is someone you've known to be a "true" friend. People use your weaknesses to their advantage.

classic wisdom is truth that remains firm throughout the ages. This is one of those advices that stands the test of time and is passed down through every generation with a few adventurous idiots on the fringe just happily plunging into their misfortunes lol.

@@anatolia0222 that's one aspect of life, but yes true. Regardless of how open and accepting a society shows on the surface the real situation is to keep things "under your hat" as my grandmother would say. Yes anything related to your personality or family struggles.

No, wear your work mask. Wear your public mask in public, your friendship mask with friends, your partner mask with your significant other.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this comes from the perspective of someone who has never been in an extremely competitive environment, like a call centre or retail, where people are conniving and backstabbing.

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve worked in environments where others weren’t trustworthy. It’s an extremely dissatisfying experience to work somewhere where you need to self-protect. If you’d ever like to talk about it, I’m open to connect 😊

Understand that when you're always saying yes to others when you really don't want to, you're saying no to yourself.

From my (all blue-collar jobs) experience no you can not be yourself at work. You have to be like "the group" or you will be eating your lunch at a separate table quite soon. As soon as you clock out you can be yourself again though.

True i was 25 last year and it was the most troubled year ever. I hated myself, I lost myself, I isolated myself from colleagues, I learned to be more humane when in fact I was very humane before. Really, find the jobs that you at least can be comfortable being yourself. Never settle for jobs that will kill you mentally, slowly.

If you are an entrepeneur, running your own business, you can do whatever you want.
BUT, if you have signed a contract with an employer, you have sold hours of your day to said amount of money. Those hours then belong to the company you have signed the contract with. Outside of those hours you can be you, but within the sold timeframe you are a property, an asset, not an individual. Also most workplaces contain more than one worker. Expressing individualism in those conditions can cause harm to others, and thus have a negative impact to productivity. There is no "I" in team.
