- Many of the Hindu men wear a decorative mark on their forehead with sandal wood paste, vermillion or holy ashes. The Vaishnavites or devotees of Lord Vishu put a mark in the shape of the alphabet 'U' in English where as Shaivites or devotees of Lord Shiva apply it in horizontal lines. These are called different names in different parts of the country -- Gopi, Kuri, Namam, Patta, Thilakam and so on. Here you see the namams of Vaishnavites in Thirukkurungudi Village, Nanguneri, Thrirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu.

I am a smarta and I love putting urdhapundraka and tripundra both
smaarthaa means family man, vaishnava means one whose heart melts and wants to help right away when they see others in trouble/pain... so as Sanaathana Dharmam followers, we are all smaartha and vaishnavites :) it does not mean iyer iyengar, etc...after invaders exploited our rich culture and tradition and our people, we seem to have lost knowledge about what we are and see people with the bodies and symbols, when our Sanaathana Dharmam teaching is about athmaa and paramaathmaa , never about the body at all :)

Can someone tell what that stick is called from which he is applying tilak???
There are multiple options for the stick.
Most commonly used one is the stick obatined from coconut leaves. It can also be a special metallic stick made of copper or silver. Some people even use the stick obatined from the incese (agarbatthi).
It is called a Namakambi, and will be available generally in any Giri traders store near your location

Without practice, it is difficult to get the Sri Churnam correctly. Applying with fingers is possible but without care can create smudges and unevenness. The shastras indicate "Tilak must be worn in a su-manohara" manner. It has to be clean, clear and well presented.

No. Anyone intiated in to Vaishnavaism through panca-samakaras have adhikara for wearing Thiruman.
Anyone can wear it. Even people who are not initiated into Sri Vaishnavism can wear it if they follow and respect the Vishista Advita Philosophy of Sri Ramanujacharya
Those who are initiated (had samashrayanam done) must wear dwadhasha urdhvapundram(namam in 12 parts of your body). And no, it's not restricted for Brahmins. Anyone can get samashrayanam done and even if they haven't may still wear namam in forehead. I'm not a brahmin but I do wear namam almost every day
