Once drained you could've easily got the fumes out by running a hose from the tailpipe of a vehicle to the tank and letting it run for 30 minutes. The fumes would be neutralized and you could weld on it no problem. It's an old trick that the gas tank repair guys used to remove the fumes. That could be tig welded fairly easily as long as the inside is clean.
Thank you guys. The stuff you used for the gas tank works good. I used that stuff for a old car that leaked gas and after I used that stuff ( gas tank repair ) works great. Just leave it set for a few days, it will be hard and seal the tank good.
Yall, permatex has great products. I had an 82' GMC Jimmy and I used that on the radiator 5 yrs ago and it's overheated twice and it held! Used it in other leaks, and it's held. So I think that was a good decision. Of course, mine was antifreeze and not fuel. Good luck with it! Merry Christmas! Have a prosperous new year!
I've commented before, we have a 1992 Malibu Sunsetter. We pretty much just do 5 MPH, bird watch, have a few beers, and enjoy the day. Nobody in our family skis anymore. the kids are gone. We still love the boat and its mission. We repowered it last Summer, just got it winterized, and are looking forward to next Spring. I do, of course, love getting it up on plane from time to time. Your diesel will be great for what you described. Thanks for the video!
I have used that product more than a few times and if properly applied the way you are applying it you should be just fine. I have used it on diesel and gas fuel tanks with great results. Have a great holiday.
You guys are so AWESOME! Thanks for putting a Christmas episode out! I love you guys and wish both of you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas! A 12" miter would work fine, but your circular saw did fine, just have to cut from both sides. Looks to be a fun project for yall. I've repaired a mess.of boats over the last 5+ decades, but have never used that product up here in the great lakes. Looking forward to a report, lol! Thanx !
I love your teamwork. Takes me back to my wife and kids and our boat. And yes, just like the you guys, do it right or don't do it at all. Keep up the great work and I'll keep watching. Jim Rio Vista, CA
When Aaron added an inch around the 16:40 mark I thought "Dang! I cut it twice and it's STILL too short!" That's a standard joke around our extended family. Merry Christmas, y'all.
Enjoy your videos! Just an observation…. Be sure to seal the raw wood where your bit went through the drain to prevent the bilge water from wicking into and rotting the transom.
Don't know if you could find a band saw to cut those with. Working with shipwrights in my youth, they used a band saw for 90% of all cuts. Might be able to rent a portable one from tool rental store? Just a thought.
I think this was pretty much always the way to go..Well done. You had to take the old repair off to check, you did, you checked inside, it's fine, cheeky epoxy repair which you will leave checkable PLUS a convert to diesel? This is the correct job/price ratio call, well done. And Happy Christmas!!!! xx🤗🤗
That tank fix should be fine... Looks like your prep was good.. As for the best way to cut the stringers If you have access to a water jet cutter that's what I would use There must be some places around that could do that.. Cheers and Merry Christmas to yo all... R...
Need a beam saw. Basically a big skill saw. May be able to rent one. A 12” table saw would probably work also. Or, you could cut from both sides with a 10”.
Really enjoy all you guys content wrenching on stuff but really love the BOAT videos! 😄 building on them and out there using them. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. 👍🏼😎 Hope you both have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year with your family. 🎄🎅 God Bless. 🙏
I would have done the putty as well. If it fails, I would worry about it then. In the meantime you will be running diesel getting the gas fumes out making it easier to weld in future if needed. If you do need to weld in the future, fill tank with water an inch or so below the holes then weld. Fill after fix with water to check for leaks, then drain and let evaporate by using heat gun to heat tank. When dry, add fuel and go. Hope that helps.
Check out a Makita 5402NA timber saw. It's primarily used for timberframing and has a 6-inch cutting depth at 90 degrees, so you should be able to cut any angle you need on your thinner material.
As I recall, the drive unit you bought came with a prop with greater pitch than the original. If you still have that prop, the diesel may allow you to make use of the greater pitch.
About your rpm/speed of Boat, with the extra torque of the Diesel, you can now run a bigger propeller, therefore run about the same if not greater speed...😊
Aaron, I do appreciate your knowledge and experience, but I’m a low life that REALY appreciates your wife , and yes , she is too cute!! 😂. But very happy for you both. !!!
Galvanic corrosion doesn’t need salt. Glad you’re removing the root cause. Believe it or not that difference in potential can screw up electric systems and cause a draw even when the key isn’t energized, changing the negative (ground). Diesel is the best!
All that can be done with the White Rust is to slow the spread of it way down. With the inherent porosity of the crystal structure of Aluminum the oxidation wicks into the material. By reducing its exposure to air you can slow the spread and growth of the oxidation to the point that it appears that it has been "killed" What I am saying is that it could be 30 years before there are any sign of corrosion. By converting to Diesel you are decreasing the exposure to oxygen, which helps you tremendously.
God bless you guys and thank you for all the entertainment you provide. I enjoy your show and you guys have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.❤❤
Olá casal incrível, estão fazendo um ótimo reforma no barco ⛵, desejo a vocês um ótimo natal de muita saúde paz e sucesso sempre.direto do Brasil para vocês.🙋🌲⛄⛵
Thanks, Emily..about the dangers of that tank repair..WE would not like you and Arron to get harmed by a tank explosion..If the patch y'all did dosen't work..go to plan B..even of it requires dismanteling the back half of the ship(boat). We love y'all..and don't want y'all to cause yourselves "physical" pain to each other with a KaBoom event.
Cut thru it with a recip saw or saws all i think you call it.if the tank fix fails you can cut the tank out or the side of it and make a new tank to slide inside the old one a bit smaller
As far as rpm and speed go just reprop the boat to a higher pitch prop seeing as the diesel has a lot of torque. Also look into replacing the leg with one that has better gearing for the diesel just like a car legs come with different gear ratios.
You can cut most of it with a 10-inch skill saw or you can use a sawzall I personally would cut as deep as you can with your regular skill saw then cut the rest of the way with a sawzall or a reciprocating saw but that's just me

Used on gasoline on fuel tank on my ford truck!
Bay liners were never built to last. Very poor made

I’ve had very good results with Permatex tank epoxy. Pretty much all Permatex products are excellent.
Merry Christmas Happy New Year both of you are Angel people I appreciate being on your channel Merry Christmas to all your viewers
Merry Christmas Aaron and Emily!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Emily, Aaron and Finley!
When Aaron added an inch around the 16:40 mark I thought "Dang! I cut it twice and it's STILL too short!" That's a standard joke around our extended family. Merry Christmas, y'all.
I remember back in the day the mechanic would tell you to make sure you bring the car in with full gas tank before he would solder leaks in tank! Lol
Yes. Its the fumes that explode. And if welding is carefully done, bring not to much heat in, it works. Or fill it with water, use inert gas.
A hand cross cut saw would be appropriate. Marry Christmas to y’all.
I wish you all a very happy New Year! Thanks for all of the amazing work you do and for passing along your knowledge to the next generation.
Enjoy your videos! Just an observation…. Be sure to seal the raw wood where your bit went through the drain to prevent the bilge water from wicking into and rotting the transom.

the Haber Feight slinding compound wood saw is pretty good

that is going to hold good on the tank.a did repare my bike engine block with that stuff. and after five years its still holding good.
Merry Christmas and God bless you!
If it does start leaking again, you can get a certified welder to patch holes, diesel infull tank is safe. Weld each hole one at a time
As I recall, the drive unit you bought came with a prop with greater pitch than the original. If you still have that prop, the diesel may allow you to make use of the greater pitch.

From our family to yours have a very Merry and Blessed Christmas! PS. I would use a band saw to cut the stringers

Diesel is the best!
Merry Christmas. Will you ever have long sleeve t's in the merch store?

Merry Christmas to all and happy new year. Hope 2025 is very good 👍
Merry Christmas you awesome people. Love yall.

Been there, the vibrations and shocks will loosen that putty. just weld it believe me. This is going to end in tears 😂
Aaron asked what saw to use to cut those pieces.Chain saw my friend, quick and easy.Ok maybe not the greatest answer but it would do it.

Merry Christmas, thanks for sharing
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Merry Christmas to you both!
Cut thru it with a recip saw or saws all i think you call it.if the tank fix fails you can cut the tank out or the side of it and make a new tank to slide inside the old one a bit smaller
Paint some Flex Seal over the patches to seal the outer edges of the putty after it dries.
Merry Christmas to you both from Missouri
Merry Chirstmas and Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas guys
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 to you all.

Great video! Find a friend with a bandsaw to do the cuts!
So true on gasoline. The navy lost the earliest submarines because they used gasoline.
