I got engaged to my partner by putting the ring in Azul and when she drew it out getting down on one knee and asking her. Its her favourite game and she was born in Portugal so it felt extra special.

My Thinker's reaction to Arkham Horror LCG killed that game for me. I set the scene: candles, creepy ethereal ambient soundtrack, dressed the table, all of it. We suffered a crushing defeat, it was thematically perfect. My partner hated it, too much luck and it's cruel if luck is against you which to me was the thematic edge that made the game sing. We played again without the mood enhancements and she still hated it. For some reason it's a game I only want to play with other people, so I sold it, but that one good play I got the first time was so satisfying I feel like I got my Themer fix.

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ohhh no! And the setting of the scene sounds so perfect! That's so interesting that you didn't feel like playing it solo. Sounds like your relationship shines over a dry euro much like ours 😂 Thanks for sharing this and for watching! 😊

LoL, I’ve created a monster! And yes we often have tacos on Tiny Tuesday! Although all food consumption is done before sitting down to game. We’ve tired other alliteration days like Serious Sunday where we play our heaviest games and Marshmallow Monday where we play light games since it’s the first day back at work for the week. Tiny Tuesday however is the only one we do every week!As far as go to gaming snacks ours would be pretzels or dried fruits and nuts.

Love the channel. Just joined the Joey Fam :). My fiancée and I met through a mutual friend when we met up to play some games. The first game we played was Fog of Love, we started dating a year later. She proposed to me while we were playing Fog of Love when she played the "Will you Marry Me" card, so wonderful haha.

WHAT!!!!! This is the best board game matchmaking story I think we've ever heard. It's Amy here and my grin is from ear to ear. This is so incredible. Would you mind if we talk about it sometime?
We also want to say a huge thank you to you for joining the joeyfam. We really appreciate your support. Do you use Discord? ❤

I've never laughed so hard at a small talk before hahaha You are killing me! Love the boardgame centered match making thoughts, I'd watch that reality show! With those scenes where the participants individually talk about their impressions of their "opponent/date" during the game.
Someone has to make it happen.
(And the answer to Amy would be no finger food with boardgames, that would have to be a trick question!)

I don't have a set tradition to play specific games/types, but I love the idea! I may start a Mini Monday to get the week started. But, I've been trying to fulfil some BGG challenges this year, which include at least one Gaia Project once a month, and try to play through our favourite big boxes each month. It's starting off quite nicely.

Red Flags for speed gaming dating would be AP and "Oh, can't I take that back? No, never mind, it's fine. Actually ... if it's okay." Grrrr. Another one would be the instant replay at the end of the game. "You know back at this stage of the game, I did this, but I think if I did that I could have won, but then you played that card, so I thought, hmm I'd better play this one, but if I hadn't, then I could have played this one, which would have lead to ... " AARRGGHH!! This segment made me howl!
What's the right size of a game collection? As I'm the only playing games in my household, they all get to be my taste and noticing how the bottom 50 of my 200 games don't get played, I'm aiming to cull my collection down to 150. The deadline is TBD - hahahaha
For me Welcome to the Moon has replaced the original Welcome To ... and I'll be getting rid of the original. I loved the little campaign (didn't really care what happened, it was just light fluff to go along with the different maps) which ties in all the maps together into a little story and gives you the thematic missions that you need to accomplish in each one.
    Thanks for another great video!!

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

🤣 the instant game replay! That made me laugh so much.... and the take backs. Definitely red flag worthy! 🚩
I must admit I did gasp at getting rid of the original Welcome To!! But given what you said about playing mostly solo I think that makes (a little more) sense 😅😅 Lots more variety and puzzles to be had in Welcome to the Moon!
Thanks for watching and hope youre well 😊

My first modern board game was Puerto Rico (I had played things like Monopoly and Risk before). I played it at the university, someone at the board game club owned it. I totally fell in love with it and I bought it for myself at some point. After moving to the city I now live in I got some people I knew to play it a few times. Then I started a board game club here with one of them. Our third club member is is still part of my regular game group. Some really fond memories 😄 My box of Puerto Rico (with expansions) is mostly collecting dust now. We tried it recently on 3 with a guy who hadn't played it before and he didn't really like it. It's best on 4 if you ask me. Maybe I'll try playing it on BGA some day 🤔 My first worker placement game was probably Caylus, and then probably Agricola after that. These days we play whenever people are available. Mostly newer games. I don't know if you have talked about your first board game experiences? If not here's a an infrequent question for you both: What's the first board game (or modern boardgame) that you played and what can you remeber about it? Do you still own and play it?

Always so excited to see Small Talk pop up! Loved all the discussion on match making and all the other discussions! I grab my cup of coffee and settle in for my favorite series! 😁. I have not heard of Jekyll vs Hyde but am very excited to try it! I will be on the lookout for it and am also excited to try Dice Miners! I have heard quite a bit of positive discussion on that one! I really enjoy the tactile nature of games! This one seems to kick that up a notch! Thanks again for a great video! Best part of Mondays! I am just a little late responding 😁. Have an awesome week!

    Board game snacks I buy:
Peanut Butter Pretzel Pillows - contains protein, decent taste, generally use sea salt, so unlikely to flake off. s-tier board game snack IMO.
Oreos - markedly worse than above, but easy to dust the crumbs off with a napkin and most people will eat them unless you buy a weird flavor.
Trail Mix - some brands aren't too salty or greasy. often genuinely filling.
Fruit Snacks - no nutritious value, but no residue with most brands.

I don't want to think about the ratio of unplayed to played games in my collection. I know it's high which really makes it difficult when trying to cull games! Hopefully soon I'll be able to meet with both my game groups and go to meetups to get more games played!
I'm quite curious about Welcome To The Moon and Dice Miner. Dice Miner appears to be relatively difficult to find right now. I could preorder Welcome To The Moon, but I really should exercise restraint and refrain from adding to my shelf of opportunity :)
I'm behind on youtube! Your new backchat video is out! I'll try to get to that soon :D

I love the thought of you two being gamer matchmakers. I’m fortunate enough to have a game-loving partner who actually was the reason I really got into board games in the first place. But they like very different games then me so that’s a bit of a problem. They love high conflict area control games and I love super puzzley minimal- interaction games… maybe I should trade them in for a new gamer match…
Also now that you’re getting postcards again, I’ll have to try sending another one (I sent 2 others in the fall but they must’ve gotten lost when mail shut down between the uS and Australia… maybe in a year they will magically appear).

I just saw someone made a post on facebook about Snactiv from shark tank, so now we CAN snack and play games at the same time! :D Sooooo, if your speed dater pulls out a set of those, you know you're set for life, lol.
On another note, you ladies keep having games come in...but at least you have someone to play with! Here I am, splurging left and right and only have my 6 yr old son and 10yr old daughter to play with. I'm slowly attempting to lure them into board games by getting smaller fun kiddos ones that aren't candy land, lol.

We don't have any specific traditions at our house (although we used to do Spirit Island Saturday before schedules changed), but I can see some of these taking off at our house!
Matching Monday - why not chose something gentle with set collection and matching to start off the week?
Mechanism Monday - choose a different mechanism/mechanic each week
Tableau Tuesday - awaken your creative juices and focus on a new tactic with your tableau
Thinking Thursday - choose that heavy, puzzly beast of a game
Theming Thursday - choose a deeply thematic game; or choose your game and other evening activities that might pair well (e.g., meals; setting; what your watching)
Fast-Paced Friday - finish the week with many rounds of short quick plays or with real-time games

Hi Amy and Maggie ! Suh a nice video again ! I only played Akrotiri twice but deeply enjoyed it, I love the look of it, it has a slow relaxing pace to it while your mind is running to see how you can achieve the most with the little number of actions you have. IAQ : Maybe I missed it but did you do a little wrap up of the gaming year of 2021 as we are at the beginning of a new year (I mean might be a bit late now 😅). How many games did you play? And also how often in 2021 did you play games you enjoy a lot (like Viticulture, Obsession and Feast for Odin for ex) as you are playing so many new boardgames ? Don't you miss playing more those older design (if the answer is you did not play that much of them)? Have a great week !

That's a beautiful Arkham Horror board. Not that I recognised it, and we were just playing yesterday.
Also, although I have by any criteria too many games, I have managed to play almost all of them. Even if it's just the introductory scenario/beginner mode out of a huge campaign. Take that into account, and the percentage drops right down. As I may have said before, I blame Gloomhaven -- because we played so much of it, we got lots of other big games on Kickstarter. Ah well.
Anyway, Dice Miner is the game that most tempts me out of this selection.

I am fortunate that I married one of my best friends from high-school, so I have never needed to go into the dating scene. I would have no idea how it would go, but board game and meeting people sounds significantly better than any other form of dating! Hopefully I never have a use for it, but I reckon it would be very successful for others that are looking for someone

I'm enjoying the campaign for Welcome to the Moon. For me it's less about the narrative, I see it more as a structured introduction of the "secret box" expansion/variant content...lots of variability/options for how to play in the box, and this steps it in without being overwhelming.

So, this might be a little spicy for TH-cam, but here goes: I went through this stage last time I was single of ALWAYS playing Scrabble as my go-to First Date Activity, for a lot of the reasons you mentioned, it was just less awkward than the "sooooo... what's your story, boo?!" Anyway, the first time I met my bf, it was actually gonna just be a Random Internet Hookup, and I was feeling nervous, so I asked if we could play Scrabble, and his only condition was that we had to do it naked... Yadda yadda yadda, we've now been dating 7.5 years going strong and we play much more heavyweight games now every day. lol

For days of the week in gaming, it seems like you'd have to alternate Thinker Thursdays and Themer Thursdays, right?
I teach about attraction and relationships in my Social Psych classes... Similarity tends to breed attraction more than opposites attracting. Opposites may intrigue, but similars are more likely to be compatible, reward each other, fulfill each other, etc. With that said, if you are wondering if thinker and themers would be opposites and not get along, the fact that they are both gamers or playful is likely to be a bigger, over-arching similarity.
Finally, is your S.O. your significant opponent rather than your significant other? :-)

Hmm, matchmaking over games? Personally, I am too focused on playing when over most games, to handle all that extroverted social stuff on top.
Happily, my wife and I met doing something entirely different- theater- and gaming was only one of the many parallels and partial parallels we found, long after multiple other things smacked me over the head that I had met my match. (E.g., we have the same birthday, and were driving the same model car)
Odd question- have you read The Rosie Project? (Graeme Simison)
I think it's an interesting (and amusing) observation on how love overrides logic when finding a soulmate.

Not a stupid question at all...! Some phone apps can hide it but there is a "join" button that sits next to the subscribe button. Sometimes it only can be seen in a browser window. Thank you so much for considering joining our little community and supporting the channel, that means a lot to us ❤

I was only in to board games like careers, yahtzee, spades when I met my girlfriend. She even got me into video games. Lmao 🤣 🤣 I used to only have a computer. I would suggest to this person they could probably meet somebody through a meet up group.

Wow really Lisa??? Did you get into it straight away or did you just give in when the mountain of games started piling up. If you can't beat 'em join 'em 🤣🤣🤣

@@ThinkerThemeri probably got into right away. I ran a group and held an event day while she was at work. It was nice people would bring games. She started buying games probably about 2 years ago. I kinda errr am a bit mad about it lol. This place looks cluttered haha. If I had my way I'd probably have only one shelf of my favorite or most played games. Well, one 6 shelf ... full of games

I didnt play a boardgame with my wife when I met her, but I remember that I had such a crush on her and then the first time that I went to her house I saw she had boargames. In that moment I just thought: she is the one! Hahaha.

Two ladies dating and they worry about being seen eating too much? I would have guessed that would have disappeared when the patriarchy was removed from the equation. Live and learn.

I love Dice Miner, and a lot of mining in top down, unfortunately. Maybe don't look into mining in Australia >.>
