My father was in this film. He was the blond boy with the speaking parts. I remember him telling the story of meeting Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly and riding in the car with them during the parade after the film wrapped.
A superb movie that to me is the greatest Western ever. Gary Cooper is brilliant as the sheriff, and the stark, high contrast B&W cinematography is stunning. The railway track shots are superb, and the whistle echoing around the deserted town ramps up the tension that builds throughout the movie.
Perfect script, perfect cast, spare cinematography, crisp direction, brilliant editing, and one of the all-time great songs. This short movie uses the oldest of literary devices--a small civilization under stress--to reveal the history of the town and its citizens. Not a single wasted frame. All the overwrought directors of today should be tied to a chair and made to watch it a dozen times.
High Noon, has to be the best Western ever. No over the top action. Just a plain and simple dilemma, Should I stand my ground or leave? To leave would mean a life of looking over your shoulder. To remain could mean death. To stay and survive would mean a happy life, if your Bride remained with you. It has everything. Self doubt. Love. despair, loneliness. and fear. What more could you want in a movie?? No violent explosions or Massacres, just a building of tension. This is how movies should be made.
Dimitri Tiomkin's contribution cannot be praised highly enough. The song is just a song; but the way it pervades the whole film and is reinterpreted and reorchestrated to suit every mood is masterly.

It was the only western movie I ever saw in which the strong cool hero actually cries. And not just a few tears, either, he puts his head down and sobs as he writes his will. A very real, very human hero.
The best western made imo, it felt like you were part of his journey, feeling all his emotions and wanting to be there to help him but that fear too that he felt! Just great.
Truly lofatmat. I experienced exactly that when I 1st watched it, but didn't realize what this newfelt:newfound emotion was...I was only 10 or so yrs old.

And surprise, look who makes a guest appearance at @2:18, at the far right of not only the screen, but in all likelihood of the political spectrum...why...it's 'Checkers' buddy for goodness sake, Tricky Dick himself.
I understand that..the facial close ups in the film are poignant and illustrate her point. Brilliant direction + brilliant acting -- esp'ly on Coop's part.

Dimitri Tiomkin's music adds so much to this movie. Another of his works: "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" is, for me, the greatest theme music of all time.

That said, my favorite Westerns are: 1) High Noon 2) The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly 3) Once Upon A Time In The West 3) Shane 4) The Magnificent Seven. Sergio Leone wins two stars, especially for his collaboration with the great Ennio Morricone. Love to hear yours, too!

A pretty gutsy decision, in and of itself. Second, was the marvelous score. Many people don't realize that music represents at least 40% of any film's visceral impact, and the composing, done by the cinema genius Dimitri Tiomkin, was SUPERB. Even the briefest viewing of his resume will blow any cinemaphile away, from "Friendly Persuasion," to "The Guns of Navarone." And finally, the CASTING. Using Gary Cooper in the role, even at his advanced age, was yet another major gamble. But it paid off, handsomely. All of the supporting cast were equally up to the task. Now that I've answered your inquiry, why don't you tell me why you obviously DON'T agree??
When High Noon was released, my family got dressed in our Sunday best to see it in a classy theater, maybe in Hollywood. I was just 5 years old - too young to understand its subtle meaning but old enough to recognize the impact the movie had on my parents.
The story's morals come out strong and it seems so real in today's world when the real heroes have to almost beg the community or politicians for help but who look the other way.
Nice video. Lenard made an error though near the end. This was not Coopers only Best Actor Oscar. He won his first best actor Oscar for "Sergeant York" (1941) 11 years earlier. And an Honorary Oscar in 1961 (the year he died) for his career achievements.
@@johnb332 I would say he "won" two Oscars (as at the time he was competing with other contenders), and was "honorarily awarded" a third Oscar (for his many memorable screen performances and the international recognition as an individual that he has gained for himself and the motion picture industry). Excellent commentary by Leonard Maltin. I happen to agree w/Kramer, producer, and Zinneman, director, that High Noon is not abt the Black-List period in Hollywood (very subjective perspective!). It is much more universal than that, being abt a man's moral conflict w/others and w/in himself...What will you do? Follow your Conscience or follow the pack? Put everything on the life -- your career, your marriage, even your life?...A pivotal, powerful story and film. (1 error in commentary: this was Coop's 2nd and last Oscar win).
Why is it that movies of this era in black and white hold us in such a trance. All the movies of today era (2000's) with all their mega budgets and up to the minute technology do not have the special touch such as these. long may we remember them and the Men and Women who acted in them... In my grandparents' house there were a copule of pulp magazines, cartoon-like with written balloons etc. but movie stills instead of drawings. One of them was this movie. Much later I was surprised to watch the film.
I use High Noon in the editing and directing classes that I teach, and use it for media studies as well. I love this movie. And, if you get a chance PLEASE pick up the book about it...it is all about the blacklisting stuff. Extremely eye-opening.

My favorite part was taking on those rifrats with. no help from the townspeople .at the end he toss the badge on the ground and made a swing turn on his boots.(rest in peace Gary Cooper)

"High Noon" was well written, had great characters played by good and great actors. As someone commented earlier, filming in black and white worked wonders for this beautifully shot film. I do admit to having a lifetime crush on Gary Cooper, and "High Noon" is always at the top of my list.

Both are great Westerns, of course, including Rio Bravo etc. Why was the Filam game the song more successful than High Noon? 1. The music from the film is a classic.2. World stars like Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale and Jason Roberts. In the US, the film was only successful later, after the length was shortened. The rest of the world is unforgettable. A matter of taste and greetings from Germany to the beautiful USA .......

It says at the end that Gary Cooper won his only academy award for High Noon. However he won an best actor for Seageant York as well. I'm surprised the didn't catch this and correct it. Oh well 🤷♂️
Really enjoyed this documentary on the making of a great American movie. Glad the movie legacy has grown with time. Gary Cooper has always been my favorite film star! I remember a great poster in Poland in ~1989 showing Gary Cooper/High Noon pic with Polish language caption exhorting people to be brave and vote (for Lech Waleska , I guess). Also enjoyed the banter about blacklisting etc - High Noon probably should have won Best Picture Oscar, was certainly better than Jimmy Stewart’s Greatest Show on Earth circus movie. I always heard that the Carl Foreman association hurt. At least Coop still won his Best Actor Oscar. Also interesting - Cooper was a conservative but went out of his way to help Foreman, who was already in England but always appreciated Coop’s efforts.

Wait, what? That fisticuffs scene starting with a sucker punch by drunk man-boy Bridges an hour in isn't considered action? Don't know if I can believe the rest if that's how it starts. Love this classic film. Love its gorgeous soundtrack. Love how Blazing Saddles parodies so much of High Noon, especially the score. I've seen this movie over and over and never get tired to at it again ! Gary Cooper the best for the role ! And the song by Franky Laine did it all ! No one else Than Franky Laine could have done it so well !
A truly great film. AND, just as controversial. Are the people who repeatedly asked him to leave really expected to help him? For me, yes. But, the argument can be made that this is a private feud fought in the town, when Will realized that he would have to fight it in the middle of nowhere, so why not use the town for cover (emotional as well as tactical). But there is no argument as to the casting of Grace Kelley (how does anyone get born that good looking) and, of course, Gary Cooper..........can anyone think of anyone who could have played this better? And the music...............
In 2022, Gary Cooper’s character would be the conservative and the villains coming into the town would be the cancel culture. The towns people would be those to allow people to be canceled.

The movie, OUTLAND (1981) starring Sean Connery and Peter Boyle is based on HIGH NOON. The story is staged in outer space on one of planet Jupiter's moons called Io. The movie poster for OUTLAND reads, "Even In Space - The Ultimate Enemy Is Man." And in an other poster edition, "On Jupiter's moon he's the only law."
There's a particular scene where Cooper is sitting at his desk talking to someone in front of him and his tin star is on his waistcoat. Then we see a reaction shot of the other actor then back to a shot of Cooper and the tin star has disappeared, then another shot of the other actor talking and then back to a shot of Cooper and the tin star is back on his waistcoat. In fact the tin star keeps appearing and disappearing in the same scene, which begs the question of how the actors, director and cameraman never noticed this, not only when the scene was being filmed, but at the daily rushes.

Gary Cooper wasn't an actor. He was Gary Cooper. Understated performances of astonishing honesty.

Second, was the marvelous score. Many people don't realize that music represents at least 40% of any film's visceral impact, and the composing, done by the cinema genius Dimitri Tiomkin, was SUPERB. Even the briefest viewing of his resume will blow any cinemaphile away, from "Friendly Persuasion," to "The Guns of Navarone." And finally, the CASTING. Using Gary Cooper in the role, even at his advanced age, was yet another major gamble. But it paid off, handsomely. All of the supporting cast were equally up to the task.

When High Noon was released, my family got dressed in our Sunday best to see it in a classy theater, maybe in Hollywood. I was just 5 years old - too young to understand its subtle meaning but old enough to recognize the impact the movie had on my parents.

The story's morals come out strong and it seems so real in today's world when the real heroes have to almost beg the community or politicians for help but who look the other way.

Nice video. Lenard made an error though near the end. This was not Coopers only Best Actor Oscar. He won his first best actor Oscar for "Sergeant York" (1941) 11 years earlier. And an Honorary Oscar in 1961 (the year he died) for his career achievements.

Excellent commentary by Leonard Maltin. I happen to agree w/Kramer, producer, and Zinneman, director, that High Noon is not abt the Black-List period in Hollywood (very subjective perspective!). It is much more universal than that, being abt a man's moral conflict w/others and w/in himself...What will you do? Follow your Conscience or follow the pack? Put everything on the life -- your career, your marriage, even your life?...A pivotal, powerful story and film.

In my grandparents' house there were a copule of pulp magazines, cartoon-like with written balloons etc. but movie stills instead of drawings. One of them was this movie. Much later I was surprised to watch the film.

"High Noon" was well written, had great characters played by good and great actors. As someone commented earlier, filming in black and white worked wonders for this beautifully shot film.
I do admit to having a lifetime crush on Gary Cooper, and "High Noon" is always at the top of my list.

Both are great Westerns, of course, including Rio Bravo etc. Why was the Filam game the song more successful than High Noon? 1. The music from the film is a classic.2. World stars like Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale and Jason Roberts. In the US, the film was only successful later, after the length was shortened. The rest of the world is unforgettable.

I remember a great poster in Poland in ~1989 showing Gary Cooper/High Noon pic with Polish language caption exhorting people to be brave and vote (for Lech Waleska , I guess).
Also enjoyed the banter about blacklisting etc - High Noon probably should have won Best Picture Oscar, was certainly better than Jimmy Stewart’s Greatest Show on Earth circus movie. I always heard that the Carl Foreman association hurt. At least Coop still won his Best Actor Oscar. Also interesting - Cooper was a conservative but went out of his way to help Foreman, who was already in England but always appreciated Coop’s efforts.

A truly great film. AND, just as controversial. Are the people who repeatedly asked him to leave really expected to help him? For me, yes. But, the argument can be made that this is a private feud fought in the town, when Will realized that he would have to fight it in the middle of nowhere, so why not use the town for cover (emotional as well as tactical). But there is no argument as to the casting of Grace Kelley (how does anyone get born that good looking) and, of course, Gary Cooper..........can anyone think of anyone who could have played this better? And the music...............

The movie, OUTLAND (1981) starring Sean Connery and Peter Boyle is based on HIGH NOON. The story is staged in outer space on one of planet Jupiter's moons called Io. The movie poster for OUTLAND reads, "Even In Space - The Ultimate Enemy Is Man." And in an other poster edition, "On Jupiter's moon he's the only law."
One of my favorite science fiction movies, fell in love with Sean Connery as James Bond in "Dr No" Sigh.
There's a particular scene where Cooper is sitting at his desk talking to someone in front of him and his tin star is on his waistcoat. Then we see a reaction shot of the other actor then back to a shot of Cooper and the tin star has disappeared, then another shot of the other actor talking and then back to a shot of Cooper and the tin star is back on his waistcoat. In fact the tin star keeps appearing and disappearing in the same scene, which begs the question of how the actors, director and cameraman never noticed this, not only when the scene was being filmed, but at the daily rushes.
That's amazing that noone caught that sequence of errors...and I think one of the Oscars was for Editing was it not?
