  • How to elderly Japanese people react to foreigners? Will they be shocked to hear foreigners speaking fluent Japanese? My friends and I walked around Tokyo to interact with elderly Japanese and get their genuine reactions to us.

But... the guy from the shop... was kind of wanted to invite her into the museum or shop, but she was being curt, and said "if you invite me into your shop, I will do the chicken dance"... I can confirm that Japanese elderly feel curious about foreigners!
I traveled to Japan on 2019 and I was trying to figure out how to use Tokyo's subway; then, an old woman approached to me and helped me understand how subway works, and suddenly she started to speak in spanish! I'm from México and absolutely fell in love with the gesture of that lady

My grandmother was Japanese and chose to marry an American man stationed in Japan during the height of US/Japanese conflict. She was disowned by her family and moved to the US, never speaking with them again. I often wonder with the time passed and new generations since, how I would be perceived by those who’re blood relatives and technically family but I’ve never talked to- especially the older generations.
Great to see the elderly of Japan exude such kindness and lightheartedness towards foreigners!

As a bilingual in Japan, I can also confirm that as far as I've met, elderly Japanese people are super interested in foreigners and very welcoming! For some, nothing makes them happier than seeing foreigners with an interest in their country. They won't approach foreigners before they know whether they speak Japanese or not, but if you get to know them they will open up to you. Younger people are always much more impressed or shocked to hear foreigners speak Japanese- this is partly because learning English is compulsory in schools now, so they probably remember struggling to learn it when they were younger before they inevitably gave up, making it seem more impressive to them when a foreigner speaks Japanese to them.

I used to look after the Gurkhas’ wives in the hospital and they were always very respectful and honestly my favourite patients to look after. Some of my colleagues were Nepali as well and they went back home with another colleague to show her their country and she was amazed. I honestly miss them (and the food! Bonus of having Nepali kitchen staff at the hospital!) and have gotten really excited when I recognised a couple of people were I am now as Nepali:)

I've been to Japan many times ,and I don't speak very much Japanese. I'm not very social either ,so I tend to keep to myself. I absolutely love jogging ,and Japan is a runners paradise. Old people in Japan are always out and about. A lot of the parks I run at have a decent amount of older people. I'm surprise how many of them try and talk. Middle age people keep their distance. Not in a rude way ,but they're just busy or don't want to deal with the hassle of a foreigner. Teenagers are the same everywhere in the world. Young kids are really cool. I'm not tall at just shy of 6'2" ,but they love to ask how tall I am , where I'm from ect. Nobody can butcher the Japanese language better than me ,and even then the kids compliment my speaking ability.

My Japanese was very limited the last time I was in Japan but even so I found that elderly Japanese people were very welcoming. There was one time I was sitting in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and an elderly man cane over and struck up a conversation with me in English. His English wasn’t perfect but it was a lot better than my Japanese. Every time someone started a conversation with me outside in Japan it was always someone elderly

Many of elderies in Japan tend to be afraid of meet & talk with a new person they don't meet often. But they can change their negative mind when they realize the new person can do nice conversation in Japanese and sometimes more positive than younger generation because it must be very rare than young generation to talk with a western in good Japanese.
    Good Job! Oriental Pearl san!!
