The story "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" is definitely one of the best and most emotional comic book stories ever written. Alan Moore paid a magnificent final tribute to the dying Silver Age's continuity by deconstructing the silly tropes of that era in the same style he would use years later while writing Watchmen, showing us an emotionally broken and utterly powerless Superman uncapable of stopping the sudden tragedies that are affecting him and his loved ones, and the villains acting in a much darker way than their Comic Code Authority politically correct versions. Apart from that, the fact Silver Age Superman author Curt Swan himself made the art of this final classic story makes the experience much more emotional. This story is so satisfying and conclusive that it makes the last episode of Dragon Ball GT look like Lost in comparison.

Great comment! As far as the video’s remark that this is an in-continuity kill, I would argue that it isn’t. It falls into the category of the old “imaginary stories” from the silver age, albeit a pretty dark one!
Side note: the second part of this story (from Action) was the first Superman comic I ever bought!

It's pretty curious that Golden Age Superman was very similar to his Injustice counterpart, considering his violent treatment towards criminal and his fierce anti-war actions. If not for the fact that he was considerably weaker than his main counterpart and never had to fight massive threats like Brainiac or Darkseid that could have pushed him to the edge, he sure would have become the monster we know in the Injustice games

The difference is that Injustice superman is a fascist dictator, whereas Golden Age superman is a superpowered union bruiser. He doesn't go around actively murking criminals (he actually busts petty criminals out of jail if he thinks they had a good enough reason), it's just that he doesn't care if the really bad ones die in the process.

Speaking of Injustice, it's quite curious that the JLA of said universe literally make the members of the Crime Syndicate look like heroes by comparison. Despite the fact that this society is openly evil, it has much higher morals than the Justice League of the Injustice universe, despite the fact that the latter are supposed to have the function of saving the world. While the IJL members had no qualms about killing their own members at the slightest dissonance, the Syndicate didn't think twice about risking their lives to rescue Superwoman from prison even though they had lost their powers and barely could defend themselves. That, my friends, is called friendship and honor.

@@MadeByDW It doesn't make sense, because if he were put in the same exact situation down the line, his decision not to kill in that moment would seem hypocritical when he's done it before. It would be more impactful if an established Superman, who has followed a strict no-kill rule across multiple movies, is presented with a situation where he has exhausted all other options, and he's forced to break that rule in order to protect countless lives. The audience and the character will both feel the weight of that decision because he would've been built up as a role model and a symbol of hope.

In the John Byrne Superman run, the three Kyrptonians he killed were from an alternate Earth. They were basically as powerful as the Silver Age Superman. Byrne had toned down his powers to a more interesting level, in my opinion.

Plus that pocket Universe story lead to him going nuts and exiled himself in space where he meets Mongol for the 1st time in the Post Crisis era. 7:30 If you think "Speeding Bullets" was a bizarre Superman comic, you should definitely read "Last Son of Earth", in which Clark Kent is a human sent to Krypton in a space rocket when the Earth is devastated by a disaster. Growing up on Krytpon, he wears a special exoskeleton in order to survive the planet's gravity. After finding a Green Lantern Ring, Clark finds the Earth heavily damaged and, after imprisoning the tyrant Lex Luthor, decides to restore the planet by giving the survivors of the disaster Kryptonian and Amazonian technology. He is forced to abandon his power ring to stay on Earth, but he still has superpowers thanks to his body's accommodation to Kryptonian gravity. Trust me, both this story and its sequel "Last Stand on Krypton" is one of the most WTF things ever written in superheroes' story

Personally, I'm not a fan of Superman killing. One of the main factors that makes Superman so great is that he has so much power, but chooses to help rather than harm. Best demonstrated in "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice and The American Way?" - Though I do appreciate when writers utilises his past killings for character development. The Superman/Aliens crossover referenced a story from a decade or few before where Superman was forced to kill three powerful Kryptonians.

I am on the fence on this. I get the OG 30's Superman killing. With WW11 and a different time. But in the 21st century it seems like almost a fetish for comic book writers to 'out dark' each other and see exactly how ridiculously violent they cane make their characters (Marvel is seriously guilty of this). I really do want then to back to making their heroes actual heroes. Just my personal option.

Superman killing Zod and the others Kryptonians during the in continuity era of John Byrne's Action Comics run is my favorite but you got something wrong. Superman didn't kill Brainiac and Imperiex; the big bang simply scattered their consciousnesses across the entire universe. He specifically says in the issue that he found a way to beat them without killing them. It was also the first time it was established in continuity that spending time in the heart of the sun supercharges his power levels.

The comic tries so hard to justify that Superman didn't kill Brainiac and Imperiex by pushing them into the big bang too.
The comic had him a murderboner, but when he realized that "killing" Imperiex would by like shooting a live bomb, he decides to push him into the BIG BANG.
And then has Superman say "A Superman doesn't kill" afterword. If being dispersed by a big bang can't kill you, then the whole moral killing dilemma pushed through that entire arc was pointless.

In the name of all these alternate earths that exist in DC, It wiuld he something if they brought the 30's Superman with his brand of justice to today's intepretation to see how he fits in this world...he would definetly be considered a villain for outright killing the bad guys mercilessly...maybe this trope has been done before but that exact superman was replaced for a good reason...injustice was turned by trauma into that persona but that superman came out like that so ut would be interesting to see his point of view of why he does what he does.
Again i say maybe this premise has been explored before (i dont know that much) but Issue #1 superman would be an interesting foil to today's comic book narrative...especially to the boy scout bashers and the whole evil superman movement.

So when are you going to do history of DC Despero since he is one of the biggest Justice League Villians from the Comics?

Why do they only record Superman killing humans or significant Villans, but never the Villan's minions?....lol

2:06 Honestly If anything, killing someone who did things like that is oddly tame.

Does the doomsday fight count as a death? Because didn't they beat each other up so much to the point where they were both pretty much in a deep coma

TBH I am racking my brain to see which hero hasnt killed. Even Nightwing has killed. i.e the Joker. OK not exactly happened as we were led to believe but the intention was there.

People also forget when Superman killed Kalibak, Darkseid's son. Kalibak threatened and taunted Superman on an attack on Earth. Kalibak saying how truly soft he is and he will just keep coming back over and over again until he wins, because Superman will not kill him. This makes Superman realize he is right and starts to let loose, scaring Kalibak. Kalibak soon pleads for mercy and says Superman cannot kill a god, Superman ignoring his pleas, kills Kalibak.

You can call me crazy but I think this is what superman us supposed to be like, (apart from those murderous superman versions ) a superman making had choices knowing it had to be made for the greater good not s superman that plays the role of TOM and JERRY
